Bio Extra

Paton, a defensive midfielder, began his senior career with Queen's Park (2005–2008) before switching to Partick Thistle, where he stayed for five full seasons and brilliantly captained the side to a Scottish First Division title in 2012-13. Having made a few ill-advised tweets and comments as he departed Thistle, he set himself up as a bit of a panto-villain in subsequent returns in the opposing ranks. He later expressed some regret on the subject: β€œIf I’m being honest, I’m a bit disappointed that things ended as they did during my time with Thistle and that I don’t have a better rapport with the fans.” Emotions were still running high in the Thistle fanbase at McNamara's disgraceful behaviour (deserting Thistle in January 2013 yet threatening to sue the club for a promotion bonus!) so to hear Paton waxing lyrical about McNamara was grating for many. This came on the back of the April 2013 (pre-contract) announcement that Paton would follow McNamara (along with Thistle teammate Chris Erskine) to join Dundee United for the start of the 2013–14 season.

Paton spent 3 seasons at Tannadice, clocking up 95 appearances in all competitions. In March 2014, he was called up to the full Northern Ireland squad for their friendly international against Cyprus, qualifying through his father, who was born in Larne. The 27-year-old won his first cap a couple of months later, in Estadio Centenario (Montevideo) of all places, the Irishmen losing 0-1 to their Uruguayan hosts. In October 2014, Paton was arrested in connection with an assault on Celtic goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska along with former Stenhousemuir goalkeeper Chris McCluskey. Two Dundee United players, Paton and Mark Wilson, had been dropped from the team pending a club investigation. Paton was subsequently charged with assaulting Zaluska. He later pleaded guilty on one charge of assault and was fined Β£500. Paton was embroiled in further controversy a couple of months later when he was handed a two-match ban for spitting at Jonny Hayes in a match at Pittodrie, even though the Aberdeen winger went out of his way to publicly speak up for the accused.

The writing was on the wall for Dundee United when McNamara was sacked in September 2015. Offering some respite from the seemingly inevitable relegation battle, Paton won a second cap for Northern Ireland in March 2016, appearing in a 1-1 draw against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium. United did finish bottom of the league come the end of the season and were relegated to the Championship. Paton left by mutual consent, signing a two-year deal with St Johnstone. He spent a season and a half with the Saints, winning another two international caps during his time there, both at Windsor Park, a 0-3 loss to Croatia (Nov 2016) being followed by a 1-0 win over New Zealand (Jun 2017). Although he wasn't capped so often, he was regularly included in Michael O'Neill's squads during their 2018 World Cup qualification campaign.

Paton drifted around several club over the next 4 years and, winding down his playing career, he joined Glenafton Athletic in 2022 before being appointed manager in September 2024. He guided the team to a 10th-place finish in the West of Scotland Premier Division during his first season. Following a difficult run of form and a 5-0 defeat to Kilwinning Rangers, Paton mutually parted ways with Glenafton Athletic on 19 April 2026.
