Sat-05-Oct-2024 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Livingston (SPFL Championship - game 8)
– Defences were mostly on top. Thistle showed more energy and attacking intent than of late but still lacked a clinical finish. Fitzpatrick was prominent but was the recipient of "special treatment". Livingston finished the stronger. But for a magnificent backwards header off the line by Ashcroft in added time it could have been a defeat.
Sat-05-Oct-2019 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Queen of the South (SPFL Championship - game 8)
– There were numerous chances going a-begging but many were just off target or blocked. A magnificent save by Fox (35) was the highlight. Thistle's second half performance merited a draw but lack of composure (Miller and Gordon main culprits) was their ultimate downfall. A header at a corner (60) proved fatal. Back to 10th.
Sat-05-Oct-2002 [a] (0-1) L1-4 Dunfermline Athletic (Scottish Premier League - game 10)
– Once again Thistle paid the price for missed chances. They went a goal behind (28) then a diving header by Mitchell went just over. Lilley was sent off early in the second half (wild tackle, straight red) but Mitchell equalised from the spot (61, hand ball). Soon it was 2-1 then 2 late goals flattered Dunfermline somewhat.
Sat-05-Oct-1996 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Greenock Morton (SFL First Division - game 8)
– Unchanged in 3 games, Thistle missed some early chances before Morton were awarded a soft penalty that Cairns saved (10). More chances were squandered then slack marking at a corner gave Morton the lead (36). Corners, set pieces and chances came and went. A game Thistle should never have lost.
Tue-05-Oct-1993 [a] (1-1) D2-2 Dundee (SFL Premier Division - game 10)
– Good start, poor middle, good finish. Shaw nipped in to score (4) but Thistle fell out of it. Nelson had a fine save on the line but was beaten by a free header (42). Byrne hit the post before Dundee went ahead (deflected free-kick, 71). Thistle rallied and Taylor scored with a diving header (78) then hit the bar late on.
Sat-05-Oct-1991 [a] (1-0) W2-1 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 10)
– Thistle went ahead with an English header (15). There were close things for both sides until half-time. Thistle kicked-off, lost possession and the lead (46). More frantic end to end stuff followed then McGlashan fired home a loose ball (55). Murdoch had some brilliant saves late on. Thistle went top, at Dundee's expense.
Sat-05-Oct-1985 [h] (0-1) L0-3 Forfar Athletic (SFL First Division - game 9)
– Shocking defending was Thistle's downfall. Forfar hit the post (5). Donnelly (J) hit the wall with a free-kick then Herd went close. Forfar hit home a 25-yard free-kick past a paper-thin wall (19). Donnelly (J) turned and hit a pass-back to Brough who had left his goal (og, 57) and a free header (67) rubbed it in.
Tue-05-Oct-1982 [h] (1-0) W2-1 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 8)
– Thistle had to fight all the way against bottom club Clyde (no wins in 14). A disastrous pass-back gifted Johnston the opener (1) then Jardine went off injured (20). An equaliser (Thistle flummoxed by long clearance up field, 73) looked to have earned Clyde a point but another fatal pass-back let in sub McDowall (83).
Sat-05-Oct-1974 [a] (0-3) L2-5 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Coulston fired just over from 30 yards then his header hit the bar but bottom club Ayr hit Thistle with 3 goals in 11 mins. Gibson came on at half-time and Thistle grabbed 2 goals from McQuade (low header, 49) and Gibson himself (from 12 yards, 54). The fight-back ended there however and it finished 5-2.
Sat-05-Oct-1968 [a] (0-1) D3-3 Morton (SFL First Division - game 5)
– An entertaining game that swung from end to end. Harper scored from the spot (31, hand ball by Ross). A low shot from 12 yards by Coulston (55) made it 1-1 then Flanagan set up Duncan (77). Bone scored from close in (82) for 3-1 but 2 headers by Harper (83 and 88) denied Thistle both points.
Sat-05-Oct-1963 [a] (0-3) L0-3 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 6)
– “Kilmarnock safe before half-time” (GH). Kilmarnock were 3-up in 35 minutes and punchless Thistle seldom troubled them. McParland tried hard but could only do so much. The only positive was that they kept a clean sheet for an hour - thanks to some fine saves by Niven. Thistle remained 2nd bottom.
Sat-05-Oct-1957 [a] (1-1) L1-4 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 4)
– McParland touched in a Ewing free-kick (30) to give Thistle (back to full strength) the lead. Motherwell (ravaged by flu) equalised 5 minutes later. In the second half Ledgerwood clashed with Kerr when Motherwell scored again and was carried off (49). With Harvey in goal the 10 men conceded 2 further goals.
Sat-05-Oct-1946 [h] (2-1) D4-4 Heart of Midlothian (League Cup Division A, Section A - game 3)
– “Power, artistry, thrills, goals“ (SP). Sharp (an angled drive, 5) and Wright (with the Hearts defender blinded by the sun, 25) scored but Hearts levelled (44 and 51). Glover (off a post, 52) and Brown (a fierce drive, 62 ) made it 4-2 but Hearts scored (70) and levelled (73) with McGowan off injured.
Sat-05-Oct-1940 [a] (0-1) L0-4 Hibernian (Southern League - game 9)
– Hibs took an early lead against the run of play then proceeded to miss umpteen chances. The remaining goals came late on in the game and by that time Thistle were “a dispirited lot” (SC). “There was no spark of initiative or vitality in the whole team” (DR). So there!
Sat-05-Oct-1935 [a] (0-2) L0-4 Aberdeen (SFL First Division - game 11)
– A weakened Aberdeen side (sitting top=) dominated. Cummings was playing for Scotland v Wales but even so, Thistle were well beaten. Playing with 10 men for most of the second half was no handicap and they scored twice in each half. Only McLennan, Wyllie and McSpadyen played to form.
Sat-05-Oct-1929 [h] (2-1) W3-2 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 9)
– Kilmarnock missed a pen (1) and Thistle scored with one (Torbet, 89). Kilmarnock opened the scoring but Turner (30) and Simpson made it 2-1 at half-time. An equaliser from a header came on 61 mins. There was nothing between the teams and the late penalty proved decisive. Thistle joined Kilmarnock on 12 points.
Sat-05-Oct-1918 [h] (1-1) W4-2 Falkirk (SFL - game 8)
– Marshall, big, strong and fast, gave Thistle the lead (10). Stewart saved a penalty but had to admit defeat just on half-time. A quick start to the second half saw Whittle and Marshall make it 3-1 then Marshall's hat-trick came with a header from a Salisbury cross. Falkirk (who played well) scored late on from the spot (trip).
Sat-05-Oct-1912 [h] (1-0) W2-1 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 7)
– 2nd bottom Thistle took the lead through Gardiner from a parried save. Both sets of forwards were “erratic and selfish” (SC) and Thistle fell out of the game for 30 minutes but managed to hold their lead then extend it through Murray (65) on his debut. Hamilton scored (80) then Houston saved the day late on.
Sat-05-Oct-1907 [a] (1-1) L1-3 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Falkirk had most of the early play but couldn't finish. Kennedy gave Thistle the lead (20) after his good run but the home team levelled before half-time following a corner. A penalty in the second half put Falkirk ahead and they made the game safe with a 3rd goal 5 minutes later. No complaints. Thistle were second best.
Sat-05-Oct-1901 [a] (0-1) L0-2 St Bernard's (SFL Second Division - game 6)
– There were a few close things for both teams before St Bernard's took a half-time lead with “a grand low shot” (SC). Muirhead grazed the bar with a good shot but Fletcher was a busy man in goal and the home team doubled their lead with a shot on the rebound. Thistle remained in 4th place with 2 games in hand.
Sat-05-Oct-1895 [a] (1-1) W3-1 Linthouse (SFL Second Division - game 4)
– Linthouse were drawing 1-1 at half-time. In the second half Thistle had the best of the game and scored two more goals to take the points. Thistle moved up to 4th on goal average with 2 games in hand.
Sat-05-Oct-1889 [h] (3-1) W5-2 Port Glasgow Athletic (Friendly)
– Thistle kicked off and attacked from the start and Ferguson opened the scoring. Port equalised but by half-time it was 3-1 (Hislop (2)). In the second half Hislop completed his hat-trick and Paul also scored. Port pulled one back but it was a comfortable win in a keenly contested match.
Sat-05-Oct-1878 [h] (?-?) W7-0 Parkholm (Friendly)
– A comprehensive win over this soon-to-be-defunct Glasgow side. “A rather one-sided game“ (NBDM).
