Sat-03-Oct-2015 [h] (1-0) W3-0 Dundee United (SPFL Premiership - game 10)
– Amoo out-jumped the keeper to head in (15). Cerny had a fine save then a top-corner save denied Welsh. Seaborne's header came off the bar and hit the keeper for a corner then United hit the post. A low cross-cum-shot by Dumbuya (55) and a curling shot by Bannigan (64) lifted the spirits. 2nd bottom!
Sat-03-Oct-2009 [h] (0-0) W2-0 Airdrie United (SFL First Division - game 8)
– The first shot on target was from Buchanan (40). The game erupted when Airdrie were reduced to 10 men just on half-time (late challenge/straight arm). Hodge completed a fine passing move (52), some chances were wasted then Donnelly scored from Corcoran pass (67). It was all Thistle. They went top.
Sat-03-Oct-1998 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Livingston (SFL Second Division - game 9)
– 5,402 saw high-spending Livingston open from 20 yards (13) but Thistle gradually improved. Dunn and McDonald had “goals“ disallowed and a strong claim for a pen was rejected (Lauchlan hauled down, 50). Lots of effort but lack of inspiration meant the home defence stood firm. Morgan headed wide (90).
Sat-03-Oct-1992 [h] (1-0) D2-2 Hibernian (SFL Premier Division - game 11)
– Shaw missed an easy tap-in but Farningham scored from the resultant corner (20). Hibs improved their shooting after half-time and went 2-1 up (poor defending, 51 and caught out by a long ball, 64) but a brave diving header (81) gave Farningham his 2nd in a closely fought match. “Sting Ray Strike” (SM). Fair result.
Sat-03-Oct-1987 [h] (0-1) L0-1 Clydebank (SFL First Division - game 12)
– Good early work by Logan set up McGuire but he was crowded out. Clydebank were the better moving team and it was no surprise when they took the lead when Rafferty failed to clear a cross and future JAG's manager Bryce shot home from 12 yards (13). A bruising encounter with little good football played.
Sat-03-Oct-1981 [h] (1-0) D1-1 St Mirren (SFL Premier Division - game 6)
– Park and Watson drove Thistle on and there were several near things. The goal was deserved but lucky. A clearance hit Park and went in (40). Johnston went close with a volley before St Mirren sneaked their goal out of nothing (88) and but for Rough's save (89) it could have been even worse. A point!
Tue-03-Oct-1978 [a] (1-0) L2-3 Mansfield Town (Anglo-Scottish Cup Quarter Final, 2nd leg) aet; agg: 3-3; L1-3 pens
– AGG: 3-3. AET. Lost 1-3 on pens. Somner scored (11) but Rough gifted Mansfield an equaliser (46). Melrose restored the lead (48) but a pen (75) and the winner on the night (86) took it to ET and pens. Mansfield had to substitute their keeper (65) and his fine saves (and poor penalties) saw them through.
Sat-03-Oct-1970 [a] (0-0) D0-0 East Fife (SFL Second Division - game 7)
– Thistle were soon under pressure and Rough was beaten (16) but Strachan cleared off the line. McQuade shot just over and the game got towsy (3 booked). Rough had a fine save and Lawrie saw his shot cleared off the line. A draw away to unbeaten top of the league East Fife wasn't a bad result. Up to 12th.
Sat-03-Oct-1964 [h] (1-1) L1-3 Heart of Midlothian (SFL First Division - game 6)
– An overhead kick by Duffy gave Thistle a deserved lead (4) but Hearts equalised (31). Magnificent saves by Niven kept it at 1-1 but 2nd top Hearts were the better team by now and they went ahead (50). Thistle went all out, 2 shots were cleared off the line and 2-2 looked likely until Hearts scored (88). Unlucky.
Sat-03-Oct-1959 [a] (0-2) L0-4 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Motherwell were worthy winners thanks to good play and goals 12, 24 (pen), 63 and 70. Thistle were without the injured Davidson and the defence was split open too often. They struggled to cope with incisive forwards. MacKenzie had a shot cleared off the line then Wilson hit the post but they were well beaten.
Sat-03-Oct-1953 [a] (1-1) L1-2 Aberdeen (SFL Division A - game 4)
– Aberdeen had a goal correctly chalked off for off-side in the 1st minute then a good move resulted in their opener (7). A better spell of pressure by Thistle saw a defender score an OG when under pressure from Walker (37) but there was no fight-back and Aberdeen dominated the second half, scoring on the hour mark.
Sat-03-Oct-1942 [h] (2-1) L2-3 Celtic (Southern League - game 8)
– 90 minutes of non-stop action as Thistle took a 2-goal lead through Newall (1) and Candlin's “thunderbolt” (SP) (29). Celtic reduced the lead (39) and Henderson kept them at bay until the equaliser (64) then a 2nd goal (88) dumped Thistle. Celtic moved up to 11th, 1 point/1 place behind Thistle.
Sat-03-Oct-1936 [h] (1-2) D2-2 Heart of Midlothian (SFL First Division - game 11)
– 6th v 5th was exciting right to the end. Hearts scored (2, Johnstone looking suspect) but Wallace finished off a fine move by McSpadyen and McKennan (20). A 25-yarder made it 2-1 (21). Thistle pressed, survived a pen claim, Hearts missed a sitter then Wallace earned a good point (87).
Sat-03-Oct-1931 [a] (0-0) L0-2 Aberdeen (SFL First Division - game 13)
– The match was a hard, goalless struggle (with Aberdeen looking the cleverer side) until late on when they scored from a free-kick then doubled the lead in the last minute. But for some wayward shooting and Jackson's fine saves, it could have been worse. Thistle were seldom seen to effect.
Sat-03-Oct-1925 [a] (0-1) L1-2 Queen's Park (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Crichton sustained a compound fracture of his leg (20) and never played again. Gibson missed a pen (15) then Queens (the better team) scored when Ramsay left a shot he thought was going over. The 10 men tried hard but Queens scored with a free-kick (75) before Torbet pulled one back (89).
Sat-03-Oct-1914 [a] (1-0) W2-0 Queen's Park (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Queen's Park played several newcomers - some regulars having enlisted. Ramsay made it 1-0 (7) with a pass from Young then Thistle survived a claim for a pen when Caffrey palmed the ball away. Queens hit the bar before Hamilton drove home a headed clearance (80) and the game fizzled out.
Sat-03-Oct-1908 [h] (0-2) L0-7 Third Lanark (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Celtic Park. “After a very even opening, the game became ridiculously one-sided” (GH). 2-0 at half-time, 7-0 by the end “the Cathkin men simply played with their opponents” (SC).
Sat-03-Oct-1903 [a] (0-2) L0-2 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 8)
– 2 first half goals (the 2nd from a rebounded penalty) gave bottom of the table Motherwell their first points of the season. Thistle were never really in the game and the forwards were poor and second best. “Partick Thistle can well afford to lose the points and the result will do good all round” (GH). Aye right!
Sat-03-Oct-1896 [h] (3-0) W4-1 Cameronians (Glasgow Cup 1st Round)
– “The Thistle won rather easily by four goals to one, three of which were scored at half-time” (GH). There was no repeat of the 15-0 scoreline this time. The highlight of the game was a first half hat-trick by Paul. Thistle had 4 reserves in the team.
Sat-03-Oct-1891 [h] (1-0) W5-0 Cathcart (Glasgow Cup 1st Round replay)
– Thistle were awarded their first ever penalty (which was missed by Cameron at 0-0). All 5 forwards scored. Paul scored from a corner and it was 1-0 at the break. Goals in quick succession from Woods, McCombie, Gilchrist and Davie sealed the emphatic win in a one-sided match.
Sat-03-Oct-1885 [h] (0-2) L2-4 Cartvale (Friendly)
– “Partick Thistle, contrary to expectations, were defeated by four goals to two“ (AN). The advantage of the sun at their backs was no help to Thistle who found themselves 2-0 down at half-time. Goals by Miller and Marshall soon after half-time levelled things only for Cartvale's 2 scorers in the first half to repeat the scoring.
