Sat-02-Oct-2021 [h] (2-0) W4-0 Ayr United (SPFL Championship - game 8)
– It was a merited, comfortable win once Thistle found their rhythm. Tiffoney set up Rudden for a header (34) then Graham's delightful chip saw Smith opening his JAG's account from close in (45). A freakish bouncing shot off Ex-JAG McGinty went in over the keeper (72) and Graham's lovely finish in the bottom corner (85) sealed things.
Fri-02-Oct-2020 [h] (0-0) L0-2 Heart of Midlothian (Friendly)
– There were chances at both ends as Thistle competed well. Wright had some fine saves and Hearts hit the post. Kouider-Aissa's pen was saved and Breen's header was deemed off-side. Hearts went up a gear after half-time and strikes from just outside the box (62 and 75) underlined their quality and depth of squad.
Sat-02-Oct-2010 [a] (1-0) W2-0 Ross County (SFL First Division - game 8)
– A well-deserved win after 5 league defeats on the trot. Boyle prodded in a loose ball from a corner (13). County enjoyed most of the possession for long spells but Thistle contained them comfortably and looked dangerous on the counter. Sub Erskine scored with a low shot (83), 3 minutes after his appearance.
Sat-02-Oct-2004 [h] (2-0) W2-0 Raith Rovers (SFL First Division - game 9)
– A Panther bullet in the top corner from 25 yards (2) and a Oné tap-in from 6 yards (21) were enough for the win but Rovers (isolated at the bottom) were so bad, it could have been 6-0 at half-time. As it was, they dragged Thistle down to their level and there were no more goals. “Ruinous Raith” (GH).
Sat-02-Oct-1999 [a] (0-3) L1-3 Stirling Albion (SFL Second Division - game 9)
– Dunn missed a 1-on-1 early on and Miller wasted chances. Albion soaked up the pressure and hit on the break and 3-0 at half-time was the result of chaotic, panic defending and poor finishing. An improvement in the second half saw some decent play, a Miller goal (68) and a penalty missed by Dunn (80). Too little, too late.
Sat-02-Oct-1993 [h] (3-1) W4-1 St Johnstone (SFL Premier Division - game 9)
– St Johnstone “reject” Grant exacted some revenge on his old club by scoring 3 (power header, 6, headed in after a fine run by Cameron, 29, and a deflected shot, 38). Saints had levelled (cracking volley, 15). After a few chances were missed, Grant set up Taylor for 4-1 (88). Thistle ran out convincing winners.
Tue-02-Oct-1990 [a] (0-1) L1-2 Airdrieonians (Challenge Cup 1st Round) aet
– AET. Thistle had the better start and created a few chances but Airdrie went ahead with a slick 1-2 (19). Another good spell after half-time saw Elliot pulled down and Campbell scored with the pen (47). Thistle played their best football of the season so far but another goal in ET (suspiciously off-side, 109) put them out.
Sat-02-Oct-1982 [a] (0-0) W2-1 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Whittaker kicked off the line early on but Thistle had the better of the play and O'Hara saw his shot blocked by the keeper diving at his feet. Having had most of the pressure, Thistle fell behind (47) but Johnston tapped in a blocked Kenny shot (53) and he went on to score the winner (78). Up to mid-table!
Sat-02-Oct-1976 [h] (1-2) D2-2 Aberdeen (SFL Premier Division - game 5)
– An excellent game that surged from one end to another. 2nd top Aberdeen's opener (10) looked suspiciously off-side but Somner scored with a pen (hand ball, 24). Slack defending led to Aberdeen scoring just on half-time. “Dazzling and baffling“ McQuade (GH) almost tied himself in knots to head in (62).
Sat-02-Oct-1971 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Kilmarnock hit Thistle with a goal in 2 minutes but Thistle had the upper hand and Lawrie flicked a Coulston pass over the keeper's head (25). Kilmarnock started the second half the better and Rough was a busy keeper. Rae headed home a Glavin corner (84) but Kilmarnock scored with a pen (hand ball Forsyth, 86).
Sat-02-Oct-1965 [a] (2-3) L2-5 Dundee United (SFL First Division - game 5)
– A defensive lapse let McLindon in (90 secs) but United went ahead (5 and 15). Roxburgh made it 2-2 in an isolated raid (35) but United scored again. They extended their lead (59 and 70). Thistle ended the game with 9 players (8 fit) - although it wasn't a dirty game. Ewing and Muir were carried off and Campbell limped on the wing. United stayed 4th, Thistle 3rd (bottom).
Sat-02-Oct-1954 [h] (1-0) D1-1 Raith Rovers (SFL Division A - game 4)
– Rovers were the better team early on but Thistle improved. When McParland hit the post Smith dallied and the chance was lost but he scored with a low header at the far post from a MacKenzie cross (42). On 57 minutes Rovers walked the ball into the net with Thistle justifiably claiming off-side. 1st point.
Sat-02-Oct-1948 [h] (0-0) W3-1 Heart of Midlothian (League Cup Division A, Section C - game 4)
– “Football at its worst” (GH). “The dullest, dreariest game” (SP). Walker came back to haunt Hearts with a 7-minute spell in which he scored with a rebound (52), laid one on for O'Donnell after a fine run (57) and scored with an angled drive (59). Hearts scored (89). Thistle were “less worse” of two bad lots.
Sat-02-Oct-1943 [h] (0-3) L2-6 Dumbarton (Southern League - game 7)
– The debut of Shankly had little impact as 2nd top Dumbarton ran rings round Thistle who trailed 3-0 at half-time. It was 4-0 (47) then Leitch scored (60). Late goals (85 and 86) made things even worse before Leitch scored again (89). Only Newall escaped criticism because he hit woodwork several times.
Sat-02-Oct-1937 [h] (2-0) W3-2 Queen's Park (SFL First Division - game 10)
– Queens had most of the play for 30 minutes then McKennan and McSpadyen combined to set up a Smith header (37). He scored again (39). Johnstone brilliantly saved a pen then Watson made it 3 (61). Queens scored (63), hit the post and scored again (86) and Thistle ended the game hanging on having been 3-up.
Sat-02-Oct-1926 [h] (2-1) W5-1 Hibernian (SFL First Division - game 8)
– Hibs deserved their early lead but Gibson equalised from the spot (19). The bar saved Hibs twice before Hair made it 2-1 just on half-time. With both Hibs wing-halves limping, the second half was all Thistle and Hair scored another 3. “He distinguished himself as a marksman” (GH). A hollow win.
Sat-02-Oct-1920 [a] (1-1) D1-1 Queen's Park (SFL - game 11)
– Lauder was played out of position at centre-forward due to injuries but made little impression. All Thistle's good leading up work was wasted until Kinloch scored against his old team with a “cute shot” (SP) (17) but Queens equalised from a free-kick (35). Only a brilliant save denied Kinloch a winner late on.
Sat-02-Oct-1915 [h] (1-0) W3-0 Aberdeen (SFL - game 6)
– Thistle hemmed Aberdeen in for long spells. They hit the post and bar before Ramsay finally scored off his own parried shot in a fine passing move (45). Soon after half-time Bowie scored twice in quick time - close in from a McTavish centre and a glorious drive from way out near the touchline. A fine win.
Sat-02-Oct-1909 [h] (0-1) D1-1 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 6)
– A low shot approaching half-time put Clyde ahead at the interval but after some narrow escapes by the defence Thistle showed better form than of late and Gardiner equalised (75). Soon after Graham missed a good chance to take both points in the first ever league match at Firhill.
Sat-02-Oct-1897 [a] (1-1) L2-4 Hibernian (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Thistle took the game to Hibs and the match swung from end to end. Gray gave them the lead from the spot. Hibs came back strongly and scored after a scrimmage. In the second half Hibs scored then Paul went off injured. The 10 men conceded 2 more but Gray scored again near the end.
Sat-02-Oct-1886 [h] (3-1) W6-4 Battlefield (Friendly)
– Suter made it 1-0 then McLucas set up Johnston to double the lead. He returned the compliment for McLucas for a 3rd. It was end to end stuff and 3-1 by half-time. Dithering defence led to a goal but a fine header by McLucas made it 4-2, a scramble 4-3, Paul scored twice then Battlefield got their 4th very late on.
Sat-02-Oct-1880 [a] (1-0) W1-0 Jordanhill (Scottish Cup 2nd Round)
– Thistle's first round opponents (Dennistoun) scratched. Beaton scored early on and there was another goal disallowed following an appeal to the referee. Thistle's first ever Scottish Cup tie.
