Sat-29-Sep-2012 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Raith Rovers (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Thistle couldn't take advantage of their greater possession. Rovers scored from a defensive error by Taylor-Sinclair (66). Fox had some excellent saves before Doolan scored in injury time for a deserved point. The 100% record had gone but the unbeaten record still stood - and still top.
Sat-29-Sep-2007 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Dunfermline Athletic (SFL First Division - game 8)
– An impressive second half display wasn't enough to salvage a draw. Possession was lost cheaply when Chaplain misplaced a pass and it was 1-0 (9). Thistle, however, were never out of things and dominated the second half. Murray in particular was a constant threat but poor finishing denied them a deserved point.
Sat-29-Sep-2001 [h] (1-0) D1-1 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 9)
– A powerful shot by Dolan (16) gave Thistle the lead against a strangely lethargic Airdrie. Hardie was harshly sent off (chop, 2nd yellow, 67). Eventually Airdrie came to life and O. Coyle (who else?) equalised when Klein flapped at a free-kick in the last seconds. Thistle stayed 2nd, 3 points behind Airdrie.
Sat-29-Sep-1990 [a] (0-2) L0-4 Morton (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Some good chances were wasted by Thistle then Flood broke his leg in a collision with the keeper (16). Bottom club Morton were poor so it was a shock when they lobbed Duncan (35) then shot home from 20 yards (37). A chip from 8 yards (65) and a 4th from a tight angle (82) finished a miserable day. Desperately poor.
Tue-29-Sep-1987 [a] (0-1) D1-1 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 11)
– Kelly hit the side netting early on and chances came and went at both ends. Defensive chaos led to a great header for the opener (41). Severe pressure saw Kilmarnock hit the post and bar and Brough had some fine saves. Logan went close (88) but a pen (90) by McDonald when McGuire was tripped put things level.
Sat-29-Sep-1984 [a] (1-2) L2-3 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 8)
– The ref awarded a pen to Thistle then changed his mind (1) then he went off injured (7). Logan was a constant threat as Thistle pressed but they went behind to a header (27). Dalziel fired in an O'Hara cross at the back post but Ayr went ahead just on half-time. Slack defending led to a third goal for the visitors before Cochrane converted a pen (80).
Wed-29-Sep-1982 [a] (1-1) L1-2 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Johnston put Thistle ahead with a goal from close range early on but Falkirk equalised (20) with a powerful header after a surging move through the middle. A through ball and a shot past the blameless Rough proved to be the winner (54).
Tue-29-Sep-1981 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Queen's Park (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– A pen (hand ball by Anderson, 68) proved to be the winner and newly promoted Queens (mid-table in the 1st Div) matched Thistle in every department and were worthy winners. The goal famine continued as Thistle (who began the change from p-t to f-t training) found the Queens' keeper in excellent form.
Sat-29-Sep-1979 [h] (1-0) W2-1 Hibernian (SFL Premier Division - game 7)
– Hibs didn't play like a team at the bottom. They had several good efforts well saved by Rough. Doyle went close from 30 yards then McAdam had a shot cleared off the line but he scored with the loose ball (41). In the second half Thistle got lucky when Hibs hit the bar but Melrose scored (55) before a Campbell OG (68).
Wed-29-Sep-1976 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Bolton Wanderers (Anglo-Scottish Cup Quarter Final, 2nd leg) agg: W1-0
– AGG: 1-0. Thistle made all the running and Bolton mainly threatened on the break. There were few clear-cut chances but the best of them saw Hansen (A) stride forward, take a return pass, round the keeper and shoot home on the angle for a brilliant goal (84). There was more than a suspicion of off-side. Rough had some fine saves in the second half.
Sat-29-Sep-1973 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Dumbarton (SFL First Division - game 5)
– An open but scrappy game in the strong wind. Chances were plentiful but the finishing and passing left a lot to be desired. Glavin was excellent again but got little support. Dumbarton took the lead (40) with a left foot drive and a scramble in front of goal (82) settled it. Defeat left Thistle in bottom place.
Sat-29-Sep-1962 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Thistle were on the back foot early on and only poor finishing saved them. Cunningham was injured (21), was off for 10 minutes and limped on the left wing for the rest of the game. He took a wild swipe at the ball and scored off a defender (50). Motherwell threw everything at Thistle and got their reward (87).
Sat-29-Sep-1956 [a] (0-3) L0-3 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A slick header (1) set the scene in this match. Thistle were never in it and it was 3-0 at half-time. But for some fine goalkeeping by Smith and wayward shooting, it could have been worse. Ewing missed an easy chance in the second half. Perhaps Thistle had the League Cup S-F on their minds. Very poor. 3rd bottom.
Mon-29-Sep-1952 [n] (1-1) W3-1 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Final)
– Thistle were the more skilful side and Howitt was the best forward on view. Rangers scored (21) but Howitt levelled (43) then he dummied a defender and shot from the edge of the box to make it 2-1 (67). Rangers hit the bar (85) before MacKenzie picked his spot (89) with the Rangers' defence AWOL.
Sat-29-Sep-1951 [h] (1-1) W2-1 Motherwell (SFL Division A - game 4)
– Thistle “reduced Motherwell…to a struggling company desperate in defence” (GH). 1-down in 2 minutes with Motherwell well on top, they finally rallied and Stott scored through a crowded goalmouth (42). A Davidson pen (82) when Stott was tripped completed the fight back. Stott almost scored a min later.
Sat-29-Sep-1945 [h] (0-0) D1-1 Aberdeen (Southern League, Division A - game 8)
– Early league leaders Aberdeen had the Thistle defence under pressure for long spells, playing very well. Steadward saved a pen before half-time but had to admit defeat (49). Aberdeen seemed content with 1-0 but McKennan (seldom seen in the first half) left the Aberdeen defence spread-eagled and set up Shankly (56).
Mon-29-Sep-1941 [h] (0-2) L0-3 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– Newall had scored 15 in 9 games but the goals dried up. Clyde deserved their 2-0 lead (helped by poor defending) at half-time but Thistle made a better show of it after the break, played the neater football and were unlucky at times but Clyde got a vital 3rd goal to kill off any challenge. Back to earth with a bump.
Wed-29-Sep-1937 [a] (0-1) L0-5 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Semi Final replay)
– “There was little semblance of a contest“ (GH). Trailing 1-0 at half-time, 4 goals in the second half emphasised Thirds' superiority. Thistle were a poor and disappointing team on the night. “Languid in attack and uncertain in defence“ only Sutherland and Johnstone escaped criticism.
Sat-29-Sep-1934 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 10)
– Goals (5 and 80) gave Kilmarnock the win. The game started and finished with some fine play but in between, “play deteriorated to Partick's level” (GH) with frequent fouls and stoppages. Miller beat the keeper but his effort was cleared off the line and 2 Thistle goals were disallowed for off-side.
Sat-29-Sep-1928 [a] (1-1) L1-3 Hibernian (SFL First Division - game 7)
– “The losers were distinctly the better side” (SC). Torbet scored (27) to cancel an early Hibs strike and for the next hour Thistle dominated although Hibs missed a penalty soon after half-time. They went on to score a couple of goals to take the points as Thistle began to fade. “A peculiar game” (GH).
Mon-29-Sep-1924 [a] (1-1) W2-1 Third Lanark (SFL First Division - game 8)
– Thistle took the lead (22) through Torbet with a fine run and shot on his debut against the run of play then Thirds equalised (33) with a free-kick. McMullan scored from the spot (46) when Collins on a fine solo run was pulled down. McMullan went off with an arm injury (75) but Thistle saw it out.
Sat-29-Sep-1923 [a] (0-0) W1-0 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 8)
– A closely fought game with both teams making chances early on. Falkirk hit the post just on half-time. Early in the second half Hair scored when a Donald shot was parried by the keeper. Falkirk were awarded a late penalty but it was parried by the excellent Thomson who then saved the taker's follow-up shot. Up to 3rd.
Thu-29-Sep-1921 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Kilmarnock (Kilmarnock Unemployed Distress Fund Benefit)
– Thistle answer the call of the local provost, but it's a goalless affair for the patrons.
Mon-29-Sep-1919 [a] (1-1) L2-3 Clyde (SFL - game 9)
– Celtic Park. In miserable conditions, the first half was even. A Mitchell goal (20) was cancelled out near half-time. Clyde were by far the better team in the second half with the wind at their backs and they took the lead but Bowie equalised only for a well-taken goal near the end to win it for Clyde - deservedly so.
Sat-29-Sep-1917 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Hibernian (SFL - game 7)
– Marshall was fouled as he scored but the ref gave a pen. Whittle's kick was parried but King scored with the rebound via both posts. Hibs equalised and went ahead then it got nasty and Fletcher and a Hibs player were sent off for fighting. Whittle scored (pen) and it ended in a series of running feuds.
Mon-29-Sep-1913 [a] (0-0) L1-2 Third Lanark (SFL First Division - game 7)
– The 4th game against Thirds in 16 days. Both teams were weakened by injury. An even first half saw chances at both ends wasted. Thirds were the better team in the second half and took the lead then Brownlie's brilliant form kept Thistle out. A penalty made it 2-0 (80) before Marshall scored late on.
Sat-29-Sep-1906 [a] (1-0) W2-1 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 8)
– Thick fog. A cross by Wilkie set up a Kennedy header for the opening goal. It was only just before half-time Rangers showed any form. In the second half they scored from close in but Thistle came back strongly and Kennedy “bustled“ (SC) 2 defenders to score with “a rousing shot“ then Rangers hit the bar twice. Thistle went 4th.
Mon-29-Sep-1902 [a] (1-1) D1-1 Third Lanark (SFL First Division - game 7)
– An even contest. Third Lanark scored from a breakaway (5) after some early pressure from Thistle but Massie equalised soon after. The second half saw both teams having spells of pressure but there were no further goals and they had to settle for a point each.
Sat-29-Sep-1900 [h] (2-1) W3-1 Third Lanark (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Atherton's shot was headed into the net by a defender (10) and Freebairn scored soon after. “A grand breakaway” (DEP) saw Thirds score but McNicoll put the points safe with a 3rd goal after half-time which was drab and “scarcely worthy the teams contesting for the points” (GH). Thirds were “palpably outclassed” (DET).
Sat-29-Sep-1894 [h] (1-1) D4-4 Morton (SFL Second Division - game 4)
– Morton opened the scoring (Gray og) but Paul equalised to make it 1-1 at half-time. Morton went ahead but goals by McDonald, Wilkie and Paul put Thistle in a strong position only for Morton to score twice through Ex-JAG Melrose. The game finished with the JAGS well on top but the Morton keeper kept them out.
Sat-29-Sep-1888 [a] (8-1) W12-1 Ulster (Friendly)
– Thistle won by 12 goals to 1 thanks to goals from Paul 3, Johnston 3, Hislop 2, McBride 1, Marshall 1, Ward 1, and Robinson 1. Thistle were considered to be to be “the best club side ever to have visited Belfast. A pleasant exception to some of the Scottish elevens who visit” (BN).
Sat-29-Sep-1883 [h] (?-?) W8-1 Orchard (Scottish Cup 2nd Round)
– “Exceedingly entertaining” (AN) and not so one-sided as suggested by the score. Beattie and Suter were best for Thistle. Suter's crosses were particularly impressive.
Sat-29-Sep-1877 [a] (?-?) L0-2 Kerrland (Friendly)
– Thistle lose by a two goal margin at the Queen's Park, following on from a similar loss the previous week.
