Sat-28-Sep-2024 [a] (0-0) L0-1 Hamilton Academical (SPFL Championship - game 7)
– Neither keeper had much to do in a poor match. It looked like heading for a stalemate until a self-inflicted free-kick led to the winning header (56) at which point Thistle finally woke up. Better attacking play (with 11 corners in the last half-hour) met with stiff Accies resistance so failed to produce a leveller. Why just the last half hour Thistle?
Sat-28-Sep-2019 [a] (1-1) W3-1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle (SPFL Championship - game 7)
– Zanatta cut in from the left and shot home (10) but slack defending left an easy header (21). Miller pounced on dithering defending to run in and score off a post (46) and Palmer sealed a good second half when he slotted home from close in (82). It should have been more. Zanatta was denied twice with good saves. First win!
Fri-28-Sep-2018 [a] (0-0) L0-1 Dunfermline Athletic (SPFL Championship - game 7)
– An error-strewn stalemate, almost devoid of skill, until Elliott failed to trap a cross and the goal came from 6 yards (69). Thistle's “passing game” had no end product but neither had Dunfermline's more direct approach until they scored. After that they were on top. Mutombo went close (90+) but it was far too late.
Sat-28-Sep-2013 [a] (1-1) D1-1 St Johnstone (SPFL Premiership - game 8)
– Doolan rounded defender and keeper to shoot home from an acute angle (6). 2 headers were saved and another goal would have rewarded Thistle's play but it was Saints who scored with a shot through a ruck of players (42). They had more of the play in the second half but neither team could find a winner.
Sat-28-Sep-2002 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Premier League - game 9)
– Thistle were ahead twice in this match through two rare goals from Archibald - a left foot volley (27) and a right foot shot from outside the box (79). A 30-yard free-kick (37) and a header from a corner (80) earned 3rd top Hearts a point. Throwing away leads was becoming a worrying habit.
Sat-28-Sep-1996 [h] (1-0) W1-0 Clydebank (SFL First Division - game 7)
– 1st league win in 10 months! Evans scored (11) with a header from a Turner cross. Adams might have scored just on half-time but the second half saw Clydebank take over and with better luck might have taken a point. A header off his own line by Cairns scurrying back to prevent an OG was as near as they came (55). Poor, but a win.
Sat-28-Sep-1991 [a] (1-0) W3-0 Forfar Athletic (SFL First Division - game 9)
– Johnston hit the post from 25 yards and McGlashan was 1st to react from 8 yards (15). 2 shots found the woodwork before half-time. An OG (Ex-JAG Adam chested the ball into the net, 47) and a Farningham shot at the far post (51 wrapped up the points. The game went stale, the points went south.
Sat-28-Sep-1985 [a] (2-1) W3-2 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 8)
– McDonald shot home from 30 yards (9) with Falkirk claiming the keeper (lying injured) had been fouled off the ball. Angered, they levelled (17) and Thistle had to withstand continuous pressure but a Donnelly (J) pen (35) restored the lead then Donnelly (P) was sent off in 53 mins. Smith scored (84) as did Falkirk (87).
Wed-28-Sep-1983 [a] (2-0) W2-1 Morton (SFL First Division - game 7)
– O'Hara shot home (9) after Johnston had hit the post then Buckley beat 2 men, ran 20 yards and scored a fine goal (44). The 2-goal lead looked shaky as McDonald then Jardine were sent off early in the second half. Morton scored (78) but 9-man Thistle held on, a wonderful save by McNab saving both points late on.
Sat-28-Sep-1974 [h] (2-1) W4-1 Heart of Midlothian (SFL First Division - game 5)
– 13th v 18th. There were arrests in the “shed“ before Hearts took the lead (13). Arrol had a magnificent save then Thistle took control. McQuade scored with a header off a post (25) and from a cut-back (35). Coulston set up Glavin for the 3rd (46) then McQuade completed his hat-trick (74) for a fine win.
Sat-28-Sep-1968 [h] (1-1) W2-1 Hibernian (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Scott Symon's 1st game in charge (replacing Thornton). Thistle had most of the play but shots were blocked or went wide. Hibs' surprise lead (23) came from a poor pass by Flanagan but O'Neill levelled from 18 yards (28). An even second half saw McKinnon score his only goal for the club with a header from a corner (55).
Sat-28-Sep-1963 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Thistle had most of the early play but couldn't find the net. There was lots of effort after the previous week's poor performance and both goalkeepers were busy but shooting was mainly from long range and posed little threat. Smith missed a good chance when he shot over the bar from close in. 2nd bottom.
Mon-28-Sep-1959 [n] (0-1) L1-2 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Final)
– A spirited performance. Thistle attacked from the start but the forwards failed to combine and Rangers led 1-0 at half-time. Niven saved a 30-yard shot from Thomson before they scored again (49). A 25-yard free-kick from Davidson (75) signalled a Thistle rally but their skilful individual forwards didn't gel.
Sat-28-Sep-1946 [h] (2-1) D2-2 Clyde (League Cup Division A, Section A - game 2)
– 30,000 saw a robust local derby. Glover shot home a Chisholm pass for the opener (14) and it was 2-0 when Chisholm took a McKennan pass in his stride and slipped it past the keeper (28). Clyde made it 2-1 before half-time with a deflected shot. The equaliser came 87 and Clyde could have gone on and won it.
Mon-28-Sep-1942 [h] (0-0) L0-2 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– Thistle were back to full-strength and got off a positive start. They matched Rangers for over an hour then 2 goals (76 and 83, “a nicely timed header“ (DR)) saw them through to meet Third Lanark in the final. Henderson was in magnificent form and an early diving save was one of the best seen at Firhill for years.
Sat-28-Sep-1940 [a] (0-1) D1-1 Queen's Park (Southern League - game 8)
– Thistle were “ragged and unenterprising“ (DR) for much of the game and trailed to a goal (15) when a shot from the right was diverted in by Sutherland. Curran scored from the spot when McSpadyen had been “grassed“ (57). It was only then they started to play but they lacked an inspiring leader.
Mon-28-Sep-1936 [h] (0-0) W3-0 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– Clyde regretted wasting several good chances in the first half and Thistle wore them down. An Elliott penalty (59) opened the scoring then “an admirable movement“ (GH) by McKennan when he beat 3 men and ran on to a return pass made it 2-0 (69). Wallace's clever solo effort finished it (86).
Sat-28-Sep-1935 [h] (3-2) W5-3 Albion Rovers (SFL First Division - game 10)
– Rovers scored 8 (Johnstone at fault) and 14 (penalty for hand ball). Wyllie scored (29) from a McSpadyen free-kick then McLennan (36) and Hastie (44) put a true reflection on things. Wyllie and McLennan scored for 5-1 on the hour, Calderwood missed a pen. Rovers went down to 10 men but got a fine solo goal (83).
Sat-28-Sep-1929 [a] (1-0) L1-2 Aberdeen (SFL First Division - game 8)
– A header by Simpson in 35 minutes (making it 14 goals in 8 games) gave Thistle a deserved early lead against 2nd top Aberdeen. They had the better of the first half but the 2nd was clearly Aberdeen's. A penalty for hand ball by Rae (80) saw them draw level then a header from a corner won the points. Thistle deserved better.
Wed-28-Sep-1921 [h] (0-2) L0-2 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Semi Final replay)
– 40,000 paid £1,116 and saw Celtic score twice (1 and 28) playing some excellent football. Thistle rallied after half-time but only because Celtic carried a passenger. Kinloch and McMenemy both missed good chances. Campbell escaped criticism but overall Thistle were 2nd best. They never looked like winning.
Sat-28-Sep-1918 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Heart of Midlothian (SFL - game 6)
– The match was played at a brisk pace throughout and there was little between the teams. A goalmouth scramble led to the ball trickling over the line for the winner (10). Lauder brought out a point-blank save, Salisbury tested the keeper and Gillow's 40 yarder was saved at the 2nd attempt. Unlucky not to draw.
Mon-28-Sep-1914 [a] (0-1) L0-4 Third Lanark (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Thistle started well enough and for the first half-hour looked good value for at least a point. Brownlie in the Thirds' goal denied them until Thirds took the lead. They collapsed once Thirds scored again (48) and it was a comfortable win against a disappointingly poor Thistle side with Campbell in goal blameless.
Sat-28-Sep-1912 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– “Rangers were the better of two bad lots” (GH). It was mainly Rangers once the game settled but both sets of forwards were poor. Branscombe went close from distance then Hamilton was injured and was a cripple for an hour. Rangers hit the bar but gritty defence by Thistle earned the replay.
Mon-28-Sep-1908 [h] (1-2) L2-3 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 6)
– After a shaky start, Thistle went ahead when a Robertson (T) shot gave the keeper no chance. Howden only parried a strong shot then a headed OG by McKenzie made it 2-1 at half-time. Thistle improved however and Roberson (F) made it 2-2 but Clyde, who went top, got their winner (90). Thistle stayed bottom.
Sat-28-Sep-1907 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Aberdeen (SFL First Division - game 5)
– A rear-guard action. Aberdeen (fresh from defeating Celtic) pressed from the start and they took the lead on the half-hour mark. Stout defending by Massey was the only performance of note and he kept the score respectable. Thistle scarcely looked like getting a point and found themselves 3rd bottom.
Mon-28-Sep-1903 [h] (0-2) L1-4 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Rangers took a 2-goal lead then Thistle had a goal disallowed (wrongly) for off-side. In the second half Wilkie was carried off trying (and failing) to save a penalty and Murdoch went into goal. Muirhead scored with a good header then Crawford wasted a good chance but, in truth, Rangers won at a canter.
Sat-28-Sep-1901 [a] (0-1) W3-1 Glasgow University (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– The students surprised everyone with their creditable performance. With wind and sun at their backs they took a half-time lead. The second half was entirely different however. They were seldom in Thistle's half. Reid levelled immediately on the restart then Campbell finished off a spell of pressure. Cousar put the result beyond doubt late on.
Sat-28-Sep-1895 [h] (?-?) W15-0 Cameronians (Glasgow Cup 1st Round)
– The volunteers lasted 20 minutes before their defence cracked and after that it was one-way traffic.
Sat-28-Sep-1889 [a] (2-3) L2-6 Albion Rovers (Friendly)
– Because both clubs were “overthrown” in the Scottish Cup, a friendly was arranged. Thistle found themselves 2-down in quick time but Hislop levelled the scores, both from close in. Rovers took the lead before half-time and with the wind Rovers took command, scored 3 and hit the bar. A well deserved win.
