Wed-25-Sep-2019 [a] (0-1) L0-5 Celtic (League Cup Quarter Final)
– McCall appointed 23 September. Celtic's 29th consecutive domestic cup win. Thistle's 32nd without a win against Celtic. After a reasonable first half performance (1-0 at half-time) and an O'Ware header deemed off-side at 2-0, Thistle were swept aside as the goals rained in 46, 56, 63 and 76. 27% possession, 1 attempt on target.
Wed-25-Sep-2013 [a] (0-2) L1-4 Dundee United (League Cup 3rd Round)
– Thistle were the better team in the first half but goals 31, 45 and 85 gave United a solid lead. Elliott scored with a run into the box (89) but Goodwillie completed his hat-trick in added time. Thistle had more possession, shots, shots on target and corners but United were more clinical (if flattered by the score).
Sat-25-Sep-2010 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Dunfermline Athletic (SFL First Division - game 7)
– A bright start saw 2 corners in the 1st min come to nothing then Buchanan had a shot blocked. Top of the league and championship favourites Dunfermline took the lead with a unchallenged run and shot (29). Thistle seldom threatened and a rebound off a post was tucked away for the 2nd (71).
Sat-25-Sep-2004 [a] (0-0) L1-2 St Johnstone (SFL First Division - game 8)
– Bitterly disappointing. Fleming and Madaschi went close in a scrappy first half. Panther hit the post (49) but Milne scored from an Oné cut-back (65) as Thistle attacked at will. A disputed throw-in led to the equaliser (83) and the winner came (90) when Arthur made a mess of a corner and the ball was fired in.
Sat-25-Sep-1999 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Ross County (SFL Second Division - game 8)
– 4 goals/8 defeats in 10 games. County scored (10) with a back-post header (Budinauckas at fault) and dominated the whole game yet couldn't find the net until a cut-back was fired home (89). Only Jacobs shone in a dire performance. “Thistle can't get any worse“ (SM). Lambie threatened to be rid of the Juniors he had signed.
Sat-25-Sep-1993 [a] (0-1) L1-3 Kilmarnock (SFL Premier Division - game 8)
– A poor performance littered with bad luck in front of goal and numerous fouls. A soft pen (Tierney hand ball) gave Kilmarnock the lead (19) then an English “goal” was disallowed. Poor defending led to Nos 2 and 3 (47 and 72). English hit the bar, Craig scored with a header then Britton was sent off (straight red, 89).
Sat-25-Sep-1982 [h] (0-0) W2-1 Raith Rovers (SFL First Division - game 5)
– It was mostly Thistle in possession and although O'Hara went just wide with a header they never seriously threatened. A brilliant point-blank save by Rough (43) kept it at 0-0 and Jardine (66) and O'Hara (75) put Thistle well in the lead but a goal (85) made for a few anxious moments.
Sat-25-Sep-1976 [a] (1-1) L1-2 Dundee United (SFL Premier Division - game 4)
– Melrose set up Somner to score (3) but United enjoyed the bulk of the pressure and 2 well-taken goals (diving header, 44 and 67) edged out Thistle. Top of the league United maintained their 100% record thanks to their keeper who had several terrific saves including a net-bound equaliser from Marr.
Wed-25-Sep-1974 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Airdrieonians (League Cup Quarter Final, 2nd leg) agg: L3-6
– AGG: 3-6. Newly promoted Airdrie sat back and decided to hold what they had. They did better than that (63) when a deflection set up the scorer with Arrol stranded. Sub Gibson made a difference but Rae's goal (76) - squeezed in from a corner - was too late. The damage was done in the 1st leg.
Sat-25-Sep-1971 [a] (0-0) L0-2 Morton (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Perhaps 17 games in 57 days caught up with Thistle. Morton just edged a keenly-fought first half. Both teams had chances and Thistle survived a good shout for a penalty. The second half was little changed. Coulston headed over before Morton took the lead (68) and they scored again (90).
Sat-25-Sep-1965 [h] (0-1) D1-1 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Thistle were ragged and outplayed and Motherwell scored (18) when Gray punched out straight to the scorer's feet. A much better second half saw Roxburgh weave his way through the defence. He was fouled but the ref played advantage and Conway jabbed the ball in (72). It could have gone either way after that.
Sat-25-Sep-1954 [a] (0-0) L1-3 Falkirk (SFL Division A - game 3)
– Thistle almost went behind (1) but soon settled playing good leading up work but they lacked punch up front. Falkirk hit the post then took the lead (48) but McParland levelled (51) with a loose ball close in. 2 more goals earned Falkirk the points as Thistle faded and remained pointless at the bottom.
Mon-25-Sep-1950 [n] (1-0) D1-1 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Final)
– McCallum scored (14) then a brilliant dribble and side-foot by Sharp was sent wide. Numerous other chances were wasted. 8 Thistle corners came to nothing. Celtic missed a pen (30) and were lucky it was only 1-0 at half-time but they equalised (60). They hit the post then Walker missed a good chance. A draw was fair.
Sat-25-Sep-1948 [h] (2-1) L2-5 East Fife (League Cup Division A, Section C - game 3)
– 35,000 saw an excellent game. O'Donnell and Wright (pen) put Thistle 2 ahead but East Fife scored (35). At 11 a-side honours were even but Davidson retired injured (39). The equaliser came 2 minutes into the second half then 3 goals in 5 minutes (81, 83 and 86) put paid to Thistle's gallant 10-man performance.
Sat-25-Sep-1943 [a] (1-2) L1-3 Queen's Park (Southern League - game 6)
– Queens dominated from the start, scored 3, missed 3 certs and had 2 pen claims rejected. Anderson scored (31) immediately after Queens had gone 2-up (5 and 30) but the Amateurs put the icing on the cake with a hat-trick for their No 11 (86). The defence was panicky. Only Newall played well.
Sat-25-Sep-1937 [a] (0-1) L0-3 Heart of Midlothian (SFL First Division - game 9)
– A comfortable win in the end for Hearts who hit the post in the 1st minute and scored 10 minutes from half-time. Thistle rallied at the start of the second half but eventually faded and 2 goals in the last 10 minutes sealed their fate. Johnstone had some fine saves. McSpadyen was prominent but lacked support.
Sat-25-Sep-1926 [a] (1-3) L3-4 Queen's Park (SFL First Division - game 7)
– “A curiously fluctuating game” (SC). Bottom club Queens scored 2 as Thistle struggled but Ness pulled one back. Thistle improved but Queens scored while Torbet was off injured. Fraser's unsavable shot and Ness' long shot caught in the wind made it 3-3 (70) but Queens won it (80).
Mon-25-Sep-1922 [a] (1-0) D1-1 Third Lanark (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Fine weather blessed this September holiday fixture. A fast and keenly fought game in which Thistle led at half-time through a low shot from Kinloch (30) when he took a pass from McColl, “dodging several opponents” (DC). Both players missed good chances to increase the lead before Thirds equalised (80).
Sat-25-Sep-1920 [h] (0-1) D1-1 Hamilton Academical (SFL - game 9)
– “One of the finest games league games witnessed at Firhill this season“ (GH). Kerr might have scored in the 1st minute but it was Hamilton who scored (10) before Campbell had had a save to make. An undeserved win looked likely until Kerr levelled (80) after constant pressure. A draw was a fair result.
Sat-25-Sep-1915 [a] (0-4) L2-7 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– There was no denying Rangers were the better team but the score flattered them. They led 4-0 at half-time from 6 efforts on target. Thistle had their share of pressure. Whittle might have made it 1-1. Rangers switched off, satisfied with 7-0 and Whittle and McTavish put a better complexion on things.
Mon-25-Sep-1911 [a] (0-2) L0-3 Celtic (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Thistle started with 9 reserves yet the had the best of the chances and hit the bar early on. Celtic broke away and opened the scoring then it was 2-0 at half-time - but not before Thistle had gone close twice more. After Celtic's 3rd, Thistle hit the bar twice. They were excellent in midfield but couldn't find the net.
Sat-25-Sep-1909 [a] (1-2) L2-3 St Mirren (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Saints started the stronger and missed a few chances then Gardiner scored on the break (10). 2 goals (15 and 16) made it 2-1 at half-time. Thistle hit the post twice then Saints scored from a pen (65). Raisbeck also scored with a pen late on. To make matters worse, Parry was sent off for “jumping and kicking”.
Mon-25-Sep-1905 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Hibernian (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Hibs started the brighter and an early shot whistled past a post then Howden tipped a shot onto the bar. Gradually Thistle took hold and Melville hit the post. The first half was entertaining but the 2nd was a dogged affair, spoiled by rough play. Gray (R) scored the only goal (80). A fortunate win.
Sat-25-Sep-1897 [h] (1-1) W3-1 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Ferguson scored the 1st of his 2 goals (15) then the post denied Thistle a 2-goal lead. Dundee came more into it and by half-time it was 1-1. They had a net-bound shot blocked by one of their own players but Thistle rallied and Ferguson scored with a header before Paul made it 3-1.
Sat-25-Sep-1886 [h] (0-3) L1-3 Cambuslang (Friendly)
– Thistle played well but Cambuslang were better and took the lead (10). Down 3-0 at half-time Thistle rallied and Paul scored with a long shot. Further pressure came to nothing because “Cambuslang's backs and goalkeeper were too smart for them” (GH). A bad-tempered game with several disputes over fouls.
Sat-25-Sep-1880 [a] (1-3) L1-5 Partick (Friendly)
– Despite the heavy defeat, when Thistle scored there was “loud applause which showed the feeling of the crowd who lined the ropes…not a few of Thistle's partisans will be disappointed with the result”. (SC).
