Sat-23-Sep-2023 [h] (0-2) L0-3 Arbroath (SPFL Championship - game 6)
– The poorest performance in some months. Not one player passed muster. Over-hit and under-hit passes, no grit in midfield, caught in possession and unable to take any of the few chances they created late on. Poor defending led to all three goals (12, 39 and 80). Had Arbroath's forwards been more clinical it could easily have been much worse.
Fri-23-Sep-2022 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Falkirk (Challenge Cup 3rd Round)
– Showing 8 changes it was obvious priorities played a part. Only 2 shots on target was all disjointed Thistle could manage. A flick from 6 yards (9) and a cross fired home (65) did the damage but it should have been more such was Falkirk's dominance. Very poor.
Sat-23-Sep-2017 [h] (1-0) D1-1 Heart of Midlothian (SPFL Premiership - game 7)
– Spittal ran through and fired a shot through the keeper's legs (18) and Barton saw his header cleared off the line. Hearts had more of the second half play and when Devine cleared a header off the line it was deemed to have gone in (80). A late flurry by Thistle saw 2 chances wasted but, on balance, a draw was fair.
Tue-23-Sep-2014 [h] (0-0) W1-0 St Mirren (League Cup 3rd Round) aet
– AET. A poor game on a horrible night. 2 poor sets of forwards meant it was never going to be a classic and even when the game became stretched it inevitably went into ET. When a Christie shot was parried, Eccleston scored his 1st goal for the club when he slotted home the rebound (99).
Sat-23-Sep-2006 [h] (0-1) L0-6 Gretna (SFL First Division - game 7)
– “Time to go uncle Fester” (GH) was one of the cries directed at Campbell. Gretna (spending a fortune on promotion once again) crushed Thistle with goals 29, 55, 60, 69, 80 and 86. The first half was fairly even and Thistle wasted a few chances but they had no answer after half-time. “I am not going to hide” (Campbell).
Sat-23-Sep-2000 [a] (0-0) L1-2 Clydebank (SFL Second Division - game 7)
– The first half had little to enthuse over. McLean scored from a half saved shot from McGrillen (53). Clydebank were reduced to 10 men (elbow, 55) but comic defending led to the equaliser (63)then a free header made it 2-1 (79). The bar prevented No 3 then Hardie (already booked) was sent off (lunge, straight red, 86).
Sat-23-Sep-1995 [a] (0-2) L1-3 Raith Rovers (SFL Premier Division - game 4)
– Even allowing for mid-week ET and Tierney going off injured (15), a poor performance. McWilliams hit the bar but Rovers went ahead with a simple goal started by a 40-yard lob over the defence (6). Poor marking led to the 2nd (37) and the 3rd came (64). McDonald scored (79). McWilliams missed his late rebounded pen.
Sat-23-Sep-1989 [h] (1-0) W2-1 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 8)
– 5,301 saw an excellent game. Either team could have taken the lead before a cheeky reverse pass by Charnley set up Flood (29). Charnley's race to a through ball and 25-yarder was well saved but Airdrie levelled with a turn and shot (77) but Kennedy shot through a ruck of players (82) to edge out a good Airdrie team.
Sat-23-Sep-1978 [h] (2-1) L2-3 Celtic (SFL Premier Division - game 6)
– An excellent game. Celtic went ahead (7) but Melrose headed the equaliser (35) then Somner scored from the spot (39) . A soft penalty for hand ball made it 2-2 (48) and the winner came (50). Park hit the post as Celtic defended desperately and Somner scored but was off-side. “Out of luck Thistle” (GH).
Sat-23-Sep-1972 [a] (2-0) W3-1 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 4)
– After a brisk start by Airdrie they gifted a goal when Coulston dispossessed a defender and lobbed the keeper (8). McQuade hit the post then Airdrie had a good spell but it was Coulston from a Glavin pass who made it 2-0 (35). A goal (53) made it 2-1 but Glavin's free-kick made the points safe (82).
Wed-23-Sep-1970 [a] (1-1) L2-3 Dumbarton (League Cup Quarter Final, 2nd leg) agg: L5-6
– AGG: 5-6. “Ragged Partick side eliminated“ (GH). Disorganised at the back and disjointed in attack, Thistle went behind (11). A heavy defeat looked likely but after Smith hit the bar, Coulston headed in a Lawrie cross (37). Dumbarton scored twice more (50 and 70) so a Bone penalty (86) proved inconsequential.
Sat-23-Sep-1967 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Morton (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A hard, bruising game in which luckless Thistle's hard work wasn't enough. Morton's goal (76) saw three forwards off-side and Thistle became the only pointless team in the division. Ex-Third Lanark player Busby made his only appearance. Morton's new Dane (Jensen) was warned twice about elbowing.
Sat-23-Sep-1961 [h] (2-0) W3-2 Raith Rovers (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Gray saved a pen (10) but Thistle were seldom comfortable even although McParland (15) and McBride's left foot shot (45) had given them a 2-goal lead. Rovers scored just after half-time then Thistle squandered chances. Raith scored again but Hogan's tremendous mazy run set up Duffy for the winner (75).
Mon-23-Sep-1957 [a] (0-1) W2-1 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final replay)
– Clyde hit the bar before scoring from a parried save (43). Thistle (in blue) scored twice from McParland free-kicks through Mallon (61) and Thomson (L) (72) both headers. Renucci, after his baptism of fire on the Saturday, prevented a late equaliser with 2 fine saves. It was Clyde's 1st defeat of the season.
Sat-23-Sep-1950 [h] (1-1) W2-1 Clyde (SFL Division A - game 2)
– It was only September but Firhill was a sea of squelchy mud and the only grass was on the wings. O'Donnell rammed home a half-cleared Walker cross (13). Clyde hit the post twice then scored (37). Using the grass to advantage McCallum raced down the right, crossed, and O'Donnell headed in (70).
Sat-23-Sep-1944 [h] (1-1) W2-1 Heart of Midlothian (Southern League - game 6)
– Hearts took an early lead (5) but Thistle were the better side throughout. Only fine goalkeeping and the woodwork prevented a bigger win. Shankly scored with a pen (17) and Thistle proceeded to miss a barrowload of chances until their best forward, Gourlay, got the winner 20 minutes from time.
Sat-23-Sep-1939 [a] (0-1) L2-4 Celtic (Friendly)
– Celtic's forwards were craftier than Thistle's and deserved the win. McSpadyen was in fine form but too many of his moves came to nothing. Thistle trailed 1-0 at the interval but Picken equalised (52). Celtic then extended their lead by three before Peat scored (78) to give the scoreline a better look.
Sat-23-Sep-1933 [a] (1-3) L3-4 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 9)
– Apart from a spell after half-time, Queens were superior. They took the lead (10) but Miller scored a disputed goal (40), the ref deciding the ball had gone over the line before being saved. Queens scored (41 and 42) but a 20-yard free-kick by McAllister (60) then a goal by Wyllie (61) levelled things. The winner came (90).
Tue-23-Sep-1924 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Semi Final replay)
– Thistle's lightweight forwards struggled on the heavy pitch but Rangers survived some early pressure then took the lead. Thistle held their own for most of the second half but a 2nd goal (60) killed the tie off. Ramsay was again in brilliant form and Grove and Ness were best for Thistle up front.
Sat-23-Sep-1922 [h] (1-2) W5-3 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Hamilton went 2-up in 20 minutes but Kinloch scored from close in just on half-time. The second half saw Gibson (playing at centre for the 1st time) score 4 goals - 2 either side of a Hamilton equaliser. Their inside-right broke his shoulder blade so the second half against 10 men meant an uneven contest.
Sat-23-Sep-1916 [a] (0-0) W1-0 Hamilton Academical (SFL - game 5)
– Unchanged Thistle did nothing with the wind. After the break, Hamilton had the elements but it was Bowie who won the points when his header was fumbled by the keeper via a post. “Individual forward work was rampant and Partick possessed cleverer units in Bowie and McTavish than Hamilton” (SC).
Tue-23-Sep-1913 [n] (0-0) L0-2 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final 2nd replay)
– Ibrox. Thistle (weakened by injuries) edged the first half on chances. After half-time only keeper Brownlie kept them at bay but on 55 minutes a corner to Thistle was cleared and Thirds broke away. Their outside-left ran virtually the length of the park, shot against Colquhoun and the loose ball was tapped in via the bar. A penalty (90) won the tie.
Sat-23-Sep-1911 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– “Play was always keen and exciting but there was little football shown” (GH). Thirds had the best chances in the first half but failed in front of goal. Thistle re-jigged their forward line in the second half but with the same result. “Each team might have dispensed with its goalkeeper”. Says it all!
Sat-23-Sep-1905 [a] (0-2) L0-4 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– Sommen missed a good chance from a breakaway and Kennedy had a shot kicked off the line. Celtic took control and 2 goals either side of half-time saw them through. “Only the fine saving by Howden and good defensive work by Harvey kept the score from being a record one” (SC).
Sat-23-Sep-1899 [h] (1-1) W4-1 Ayr (SFL Second Division - game 5)
– If anything, Thistle had the better of things in the first half but the teams turned round at 1-1. It took Thistle a long time to get the better of a stubborn defence. Keeper McDonald's brother was in goal for Ayr.
Sat-23-Sep-1893 [h] (?-?) W2-0 Northern (Friendly)
– “At Inchview. Result - Thistle, 2 goals; Northern, 0”(GH)
Sat-23-Sep-1882 [h] (3-0) W5-0 Whitefield (Friendly)
– The visitors had a couple of close efforts early on but by half-time it was 3-0. “At the call of time the Partick Thistle had won a very pleasant game by five goals to nothing” (GH).
