Sat-22-Sep-2018 [h] (3-2) W3-2 Queen of the South (SPFL Championship - game 6)
– Queens scored with their first attack (4). Doolan fired home a low driven cross (32). Thistle fell behind to a goal on the break (34) but Spittal lashed home a half-hit clearance (38). His magnificent top-corner 20-yarder (41) made it 3-2. Doolan hit the post (68) then lots of Queens pressure was contained for the win.
Sat-22-Sep-2012 [h] (1-0) W2-1 Cowdenbeath (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Thistle, playing some fine stuff, took the lead from the penalty spot (Muirhead, 25). Their dominance should have produced more goals but Cowdenbeath came back strongly and scored with a magnificent 30-yarder (49). An OG finished the scoring when a defender turned in a Taylor-Sinclair cross (70).
Sat-22-Sep-2007 [h] (1-0) W2-0 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Hinchliffe had a tremendous debut in goal. Buchanan scored off a post (11) then chances to extend the lead were wasted. Queens were the better side for much of the second half and came close to equalising but thanks to Hinchliffe it remained 1-0 until McKinlay scored with a header from a corner (81).
Wed-22-Sep-2004 [a] (1-1) L1-3 Dunfermline Athletic (League Cup 3rd Round)
– The score was harsh on Thistle. There were a few chances at either end then SPL Dunfermline opened the scoring (from a cross, 30) but Dowie equalised from a cross at the 2nd attempt (38). Thistle fell behind again (51) but they had a good spell and Oné hit the bar. A scarcely deserved 3rd (76) flattered the Pars.
Sat-22-Sep-2001 [a] (2-2) L2-3 Ross County (SFL First Division - game 8)
– Thistle took the lead when Fleming headed in from close range (2) then Britton did likewise (4) but County clawed their way back and scored (volley slipped under Klein's body, 20). Dolan and Fleming collided and it led to a glorious 30-yard strike (38). A back-post header (49) won it. Chances at both ends went untaken.
Sat-22-Sep-1990 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Still unchanged and still looking for a home win. Hamilton should have gone ahead when Duncan fumbled but the chance was wasted. Wright, McGlashan and Law went close but the keeper was in fine form. A cross-cum-shot deceived Duncan and sailed over his head (57) for the only goal.
Sat-22-Sep-1984 [a] (1-0) D2-2 St Johnstone (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Brough saved a pen (7) before Dalziel scored from 10 yards (12). Logan went close from 25 yards then Thistle lost Walker and Donnelly to injury. Saints hit the post just before half-time. They levelled (56) and went ahead (86). It looked like defeat but Dalziel earned a point in this good game a min later.
Wed-22-Sep-1982 [h] (0-1) L0-3 Celtic (League Cup Quarter Final, 2nd leg) agg: L0-7
– AGG: 0-7. Thistle had a good opening spell and played some good stuff. McNab, Kay and Scott had good games and Johnston should have given them the lead (17). Celtic soon took over however and goals (22, 56 and 85) eased them into the next round, but for once, there were positive signs.
Sat-22-Sep-1979 [a] (0-2) L1-2 Dundee United (SFL Premier Division - game 6)
– Despite the heroics of Rough, 2 comic gifts made it 2-0 at h-t. After 4 attempts to clear their lines, a Campbell clearance hit a forward and went in (33) then panic struck the defence (44). O'Hara headed in (47) to reduce the lead but the fight-back was thwarted by the United keeper (ex-England cap, Bonetti).
Sat-22-Sep-1973 [h] (1-1) D1-1 Dunfermline Athletic (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Glavin capped an excellent performance when he smashed home a Rae cross (14) but it was 1-1 just before half-time due to slack marking. The last 15 minutes saw both keepers have fine saves. Better individual performances were evident but Thistle's rigid 4-4-2 formation meant a lack of flair but at least it was a point.
Wed-22-Sep-1971 [h] (3-0) W5-1 St Johnstone (League Cup Quarter Final, 2nd leg) agg: W5-3
– “Partick Thistle hit back for place in last four of League Cup”. “A devastating display” (GH). Thistle huffed and puffed for the first thirty minutes, making no impact. It was St Johnstone who looked dangerous and likely to add to their aggregate lead. Things, however, were about to liven up. Bone rode two tackles before squeezing a shot in from a narrow angle (30). A minute later it was 2-0 when Coulston fired one in off a post from the edge of the box. Donaldson in the Saints goal was blameless for these goals but he had to take the blame for the third. He gathered a long lob safely but dropped it when under pressure from Coulston and Bone tapped the ball into the net. In the second half St Johnstone scored with a penalty when Rough impeded Connolly. Back level on aggregate, St Johnstone pressed for a winner and came close with shots from distance that went narrowly past. It looked however as if extra time would be needed to settle the tie but gradually Thistle built up some sustained pressure and when Donaldson went walkabout when he tried to gather a through ball out on the wing, Bone squared the ball to Coulston who found the empty net for Thistle's fourth. Five minutes from time Gibson beat two men and while under pressure from a third, hit a hard shot past the keeper. Thistle went through 5-3 on aggregate. (And, yes, J Lambie was booked during the match.)
Wed-22-Sep-1965 [a] (0-2) W6-2 Queen of the South (Friendly)
– A header (3) and a scramble (4) put Thistle well behind but they rallied after half-time and Conway scored (54). Queens hit the bar then Gibb scored against the run of play (57). Roxburgh (diving header, 59), Cowan (from way out wide, 75), Conway (close in, 82) and Cunningham (83) completed a flattering scoreline.
Sat-22-Sep-1962 [h] (2-1) L3-4 Heart of Midlothian (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Brown scored with a vicious free-kick (15) but Hearts levelled (soft pen, 36) then Ferguson scored from a Hainey cut-back (44). Hearts scored (68) with 4 players clearly off-side and again at point-blank range (72). Hainey equalised (from a parried save, 74) but a bullet header (85) extended Hearts' 100% record.
Sat-22-Sep-1956 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Queen's Park (SFL First Division - game 2)
– “Thistle's forwards were feckless“ (GH). Smith hit the bar (16). Walker (in his penultimate appearance) ballooned over from a yard. Pointless Queens were never out of it and caused numerous problems. Smith went close in the second half but keeper Smith had some fine saves and Kerr cleared off the line late on. Lucky.
Sat-22-Sep-1951 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Third Lanark (SFL Division A - game 3)
– Walker went close then Thirds grazed the bar from 30 yards. Stott hit the post, Walker wasted a good chance, then Thirds did the same. In the second half, a desperate lunge denied McCredie, Thirds missed from 3 yards. Ledgerwood had a fine save as Thistle struggled. Little wonder it ended 0-0.
Sat-22-Sep-1945 [a] (0-1) D1-1 Queen's Park (Southern League, Division A - game 7)
– Queen's opened the scoring with a pen (39) for a half-time lead but on possession and chances by then they should have had the game in the bag. Their forwards were “puerile” (SP). Not that Thistle's were any better (“a disjointed bunch”). It took a thunderous Husband free-kick (53) to earn a point.
Sat-22-Sep-1934 [h] (1-2) L1-3 Heart of Midlothian (SFL First Division - game 9)
– Hearts scored (4 and 35) before Miller scored with a header on half-time. Miller hit the bar with a pen and scored with the rebound but it was correctly disallowed. Thistle piled on the pressure and hit the woodwork 4 times before a 3rd goal settled it (90). Despite Thistle's bad luck, Hearts deserved their win.
Tue-22-Sep-1931 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final replay)
– “A keen and exciting match” (SC). Clyde took their chances, Thistle were shot-shy and disjointed. Ness hit the bar with the goal gaping early on then Clyde went 1-up and hit the bar before half-time. Jackson had some fine saves and it was all Clyde and they got a deserved 2nd 20 minutes from time.
Sat-22-Sep-1928 [h] (3-1) W6-2 St Johnstone (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Torbet (11) and Hair (12) gave Thistle an early lead but St Johnstone scored before Torbet got another just on half-time. A penalty gave the visitors some hope but Hair scored another 2 and Torbet his 2nd for the big win to leave Thistle mid-table. The big score was harsh on Saints who played well.
Sat-22-Sep-1923 [a] (1-1) L1-4 Raith Rovers (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Lambie headed in a corner (6) but it was 1-1 at half-time. The game was a midfield struggle until 3rd top Rovers scored 3 more and ran out easy winners. Thistle experimented with some forwards playing out of their normal positions but they were generally poor and the defence was under pressure for long spells.
Sat-22-Sep-1917 [h] (1-0) W1-0 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– Marshall bustled his way into the box and scored from a seemingly impossible angle to give Thistle a half-time lead. Ferguson saved a penalty to deny Thirds an equaliser in the second half and the woodwork denied them a goal soon after but that was as close as they got to scoring. Strangely, it was a tame cup-tie.
Sat-22-Sep-1906 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Falkirk soon snuffed out Thistle's attacks and their keeper didn't touch the ball for half an hour. Howden had some fine saves then play swung towards the Falkirk end. Kennedy scored 3 minutes after half-time with a cross from the right but Falkirk equalised 2 minutes later in a goalmouth scramble and finished the better team.
Sat-22-Sep-1900 [a] (1-2) L1-2 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 5)
– The first half was well contested but it was Kilmarnock who took a 2-goal lead before Hyslop reduced the lead before half-time. The second half was goalless but no less exciting. Strenuous efforts by Thistle (who had long spells of superiority) came to nothing. Hyslop had several shots well saved by the keeper.
Sat-22-Sep-1894 [a] (?-?) L0-3 Annbank (Scottish Cup 2nd Preliminary Round)
– No report found but SR reported that Thistle should have protested about the state of the park. (3 other clubs had done so yet failed). Anecdotal evidence (as yet untraced) suggests Thistle were run out of town by a stone-throwing mob. Annbank's ground was called “Pebble Park”! “By no means disgraced” (SR).
Sat-22-Sep-1888 [h] (3-1) W4-2 Hibernian (Friendly)
– The game kicked of half an hour late owing to the late arrival of Hibs. McBride made it 1-0 (4). Paul (20, fine sweeping move) then Hislop (21, goalmouth scramble) made it 3-0 in quick time but soon it was 3-1. There was a delay until a new ball could be found. Paul scored in the second half as did Hibs (90).
Sat-22-Sep-1877 [a] (?-?) L1-3 Camden (Friendly)
– The third season opens at Possil Park and John Inglis makes some history as the first-known Partick Thistle player to have scored in successive seasons. Typically, the pesky opponents spoil the stat.
