Sun-21-Sep-2025 [h] (0-2) L0-4 Celtic (League Cup Quarter Final)
– To their credit Thistle tried to take the game to Celtic but that only exposed them to the predictable gulf in class. Poor defending gifted Celtic their 2-goal h-t lead and wayward shooting prevented a worse h-t score. Caught on the break (46) effectively finished the match. Lost possession led to the 4th (79). There were a few half chances but Celtic were never seriously troubled.
Sat-21-Sep-2024 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Dunfermline Athletic (SPFL Championship - game 6)
– One shot on target each, 20 fouls each. There was nothing between the teams in a fast, open match of low quality. Thistle were solid at the back but the midfield starved Graham and Ablade of chances. The otherwise anonymous Fitzpatrick weaved past several defenders and shot under the keeper (88) for a fortunate 3 points.
Sat-21-Sep-2019 [h] (0-2) L0-3 Dunfermline Athletic (SPFL Championship - game 6)
– Caldwell sacked 18 Sept. A bright start but once they fell behind to a shot from 6 yards (ex-JAG Nisbet, 23) Thistle were never in it. The bar saved them (29) then lost possession on half-way led to an angled drive (31). A deflected 20-yarder (49) tied it up. No goal threat, no drive forward, shocking defending. Relegation form.
Sat-21-Sep-2013 [h] (1-0) D1-1 Kilmarnock (SPFL Premiership - game 7)
– A penalty for a high challenge was converted by Muirhead (11) and Thistle should have gone on and sewn the game up but unlucky finishing and good goalkeeping ensured they didn't. Kilmarnock equalised (47) and enjoyed a 20-minute spell. Craigen hit the post but that was as close as they got to a winner.
Sat-21-Sep-2002 [a] (0-2) L0-3 Rangers (Scottish Premier League - game 8)
– “I would almost have been as well putting my pigeons out there” (Lambie). A loose ball from a parried save gave Rangers the lead (3). Hardie and Mitchell had half chances but goals (27) and in the second half (defence sliced open) made it 3-0. Chances were created but the forwards couldn't finish.
Sat-21-Sep-1996 [a] (3-2) D4-4 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Moss (header from a corner, 7). Slack marking led to 1-1 (9). Moss scored again (24). Poor defending, 2-2 (26). Henderson's fine shot from the edge of the box (43) then Adams (drove in an Evans cross, 51) put Thistle 4-2 up. Harsh pen (hand ball, 75). Panic set in and the equaliser came (90). 2-goal lead thrown away.
Sat-21-Sep-1991 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Montrose (SFL First Division - game 8)
– Montrose put up stubborn resistance and were unlucky not to draw. Murdoch pulled off some tremendous saves and the woodwork saved Thistle on one occasion. Shaw got the only goal from 12 yards (47) after interplay with McGlashan. Murdoch excelled late on before Thistle had some close things.
Sat-21-Sep-1985 [h] (1-0) L1-2 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 7)
– “Sadly this won't be Thistle's year” (GH). Hamilton hit the post early on but went behind to a goal from Gallagher (35, from a knock-down on his debut). A huge kick-out from the keeper was slammed home (58) and a hopeless clearance was punished (87). Hamilton 2 points off the pace, Thistle 1 point off a relegation spot.
Sat-21-Sep-1974 [a] (0-1) L1-3 Morton (SFL First Division - game 4)
– There were half chances at both ends then when Arrol could only parry a shot, it was 1-0 (11). Good approach work was wasted by poor shooting as Thistle pressed. When a bouncing ball came off the bar and was nodded in (51) it was 2-0. A header (72) made it 3-0 before Coulston scored a consolation (89).
Sat-21-Sep-1968 [a] (0-0) L0-1 St Mirren (SFL First Division - game 3)
– St Mirren probably just had the edge in a goalless first half. They had the better chances but Ritchie was in good form. The second half was much like the 1st. St Mirren had most of the play and took a lead their better play and pressure deserved (68) with a shot from the edge of the box with Ritchie well beaten.
Sat-21-Sep-1963 [a] (0-3) L1-4 Heart of Midlothian (SFL First Division - game 4)
– The game was effectively over when Hearts scored 3 times (4, 15 and 32) and Duffy and Hainey both missed great chances before half-time. Gourley pulled one back from 12 yards following a defensive blunder (59) but unbeaten Hearts, clearly the better team, scored again with a 20-yard free-kick (85).
Sat-21-Sep-1957 [a] (1-3) L1-6 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Weakened Thistle scored against unbeaten Clyde through McParland (16). Ewing was carried off injured (30) then a deflected corner off Baird made it 1-1 (32) before 2 quick goals before half-time killed the game. Clyde hit the post once, Thistle twice. With Ewing limping it was all Clyde with 3 more (pen, 68, 80 and 86).
Tue-21-Sep-1954 [a] (2-2) W5-4 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Semi Final 2nd replay)
– Celtic scored 18 and 28 (2 yards off-side) but a clearance rebounded off Smith into the net (30) then Bell pounced on a poor clearance (40). Wright (keeper fumble, 70) then Smith (from a McParland lob, 78) made it 4-2. Celtic hit back (Ledgerwood faulty, pen, 81 and 84) before McParland's right-foot shot (88).
Wed-21-Sep-1949 [a] (0-2) L0-4 Hibernian (League Cup Quarter Final, 2nd leg) agg: L4-6
– AGG: 4-6. Another fine match. 2 goals in 11 minutes levelled the tie. With 11 men, unchanged Thistle played well and were never out of it but Sharp pulled a muscle (44). The 10 men held out gallantly with some tremendous defending and the result was still in the balance until 2 goals (70 and 71) settled it on aggregate.
Sat-21-Sep-1946 [a] (1-3) L2-3 Kilmarnock (League Cup Division A, Section A - game 1)
– Kilmarnock were more superior than the score suggested. They scored (5) but Gourlay equalised a minute later. Thistle were seldom in it however and goals (35 and 36) put the game beyond them. The home forwards missed umpteen chances and Chisholm's goal (85) meant little.
Sat-21-Sep-1940 [h] (3-1) W4-2 Heart of Midlothian (Southern League - game 7)
– Two goals from both Sharp and Younger won the game for Thistle. Younger gave them the lead (8), Sharp doubled it (20). Hearts scored (34) but Younger made it 3-1 at half-time (42) . Sharp got his 2nd (72) but Hearts hit back 7 minutes later. “Although they were on the losing side Hearts played some delightful football“. “Sharp improves with every game“ (SC).
Sat-21-Sep-1935 [a] (0-0) L0-1 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 9)
– Bottom of the league Clyde's first win was deserved. Thistle were a mixture of brilliant defence and lacklustre forwards. Johnston parried a shot that was knocked in on the rebound (59) and it proved to be the winner although Thistle protested it was hand ball. Thistle remained 6th from bottom.
Sat-21-Sep-1929 [h] (0-0) W2-1 Heart of Midlothian (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Hearts were the better team in the first half - although Thistle were dangerous on the break. The second half was even in play and a hotly-disputed penalty gave Hearts the lead (75). Simpson pounced on an error to equalise (86) and he scored with literally the last kick of the game. Thistle went 3rd.
Sat-21-Sep-1918 [a] (1-0) W2-1 Hamilton Academical (SFL - game 5)
– A fast, entertaining game. Bowie scored from a breakaway to lead 1-0 at half-time (looking off-side). Salisbury's cross was turned in as an OG to double the lead before Hamilton pulled one back. Thistle were fortunate to take the points. All the pressure came from Accies in the second half.
Sat-21-Sep-1912 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Airdrie “were full of fire” (SC) and opened the scoring from close in. They got their 2nd after the break and but for McTurk it could have been a lot worse. Play got rough near the end and when an Airdrie player was brought down he “put up his fists to Hamilton, who replied”. Both were sent off.
Sat-21-Sep-1907 [a] (1-1) L1-3 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final replay)
– “Thistle started with a sting” (SR) but their shooting with the wind was too poor and infrequent. Gallacher put them ahead but Thirds levelled before half-time. They had the better of the second half and scored twice to put them into the final v Rangers, deservedly on their second half performance. “Robust rather than beautiful”
Sat-21-Sep-1901 [h] (1-0) W2-1 Airdrieonians (SFL Second Division - game 5)
– There was little separating the teams until a Muirhead shot when keeper and ball slipped over the line and into the goal. A better spell of pressure from Airdrie saw them equalise after half-time but Muirhead scored again thanks to a defensive mix-up. Unlucky Airdrie give it their all but Thistle held on for both points.
Sat-21-Sep-1895 [h] (2-0) W5-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish Qualifying Cup 2nd Round)
– Appeal upheld. 2 goals by Paul (12 and 35) gave Thistle a half-time lead. Airdrie applied considerable pressure then Campbell made it 3 on the break and Wilkie make it 4-0 almost immediately. Airdrie scored when Conway (who had a brilliant save just before half-time) made the mess of a shot. Paul got his hat-trick (83).
Sat-21-Sep-1889 [a] (2-1) W4-1 Summerton Athletic (Glasgow Cup 1st Round)
– It was even at the start but Thistle gradually got the upper hand and scored 2 quick goals (Johnston and Ferguson). Summerton (from Govan) scored and only good defensive work prevented an equaliser. In the second half Paul, playing at outside-right, scored and a 4th was added soon after.
Sat-21-Sep-1878 [h] (?-?) W2-0 Springvale (Friendly)
– Goals from Burleigh and Brash give Thistle the win.
