Sat-20-Sep-2008 [h] (1-1) W2-1 Greenock Morton (SFL First Division - game 7)
– A scrappy affair. Harkins headed in a Roberts cross (36) then a finger-tip save denied Maxwell from 35 yards. Morton levelled just on half-time, looking off-side. Maxwell bundled a corner home (66) then good goalkeeping and desperate defending were needed until the end to prevent Morton scoring.
Sat-20-Sep-2003 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Dundee United (Scottish Premier League - game 6)
– Thistle had more of the play and looked “less bad” but their defending and finishing were poor. 2 goals (static defending at a corner, 41 and a cut-back, 63) gave United their 1st win of the season. Thistle replaced them at the bottom, seemingly destined to stay there on merit. Pressure was building on Collins.
Sat-20-Sep-1997 [h] (1-1) W2-1 Greenock Morton (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Morgan's fine run and shot from 25 yards gave Thistle the lead (31) but slack defending wiped it out (32). A fine move ended with Henderson's header (his first full game for nearly 8 months, 58). There were some nervous moments and good saves by Stewart before Thistle got only their 7th competitive win in 1997.
Wed-20-Sep-1995 [a] (1-1) L*1-1 Airdrieonians (League Cup Quarter Final) aet; * L2-3 pens
– AET. Lost 2-3 on pens. First Division Airdrie went 1-down when the keeper misjudged a Foster lob from 40 yards (19) but they equalised (35) and were the better team. Walker (MOTM) had a series of tremendous saves to take the tie into extra time and penalties but in the end the better team deserved the win.
Sat-20-Sep-1986 [a] (0-0) L0-2 East Fife (SFL First Division - game 9)
– Back to their worst, Thistle (with Colin West from Chelsea on loan) failed to score with the strong wind behind them. Kelly's shot off the bar was their only first half chance. A needless foul by Walker gave East Fife the lead from the spot (47) and the game was finished (80) when slack defending led to the 2nd. 2nd bottom.
Sat-20-Sep-1980 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Aberdeen (SFL Premier Division - game 6)
– 9th v 2nd was a scrappy game with occasional flashes of good play. O'Hara headed wide in the 2nd min. Thistle were the better team but lacked a genuine goal scorer. Aberdeen picked it up after half-time and Rough was a busy keeper. The winner came when a goal line clearance was knocked back in (72).
Sat-20-Sep-1975 [a] (2-0) W3-2 Dumbarton (SFL First Division - game 4)
– “Double JAG stirs it up at Boghead“ (ET). Somner set up Joe Craig (30) with a shot in the corner of the net then hand ball gave Somner his pen (37). A glancing header (47) and the equaliser (62) upset things but Joe Craig touched in a corner (75) to take both points. Thistle went top.
Wed-20-Sep-1972 [a] (0-0) L0-1 East Fife (League Cup 2nd Round, 1st leg)
– Thistle's grasp of the League Cup suddenly slackened as they underestimated the Fifers. Their nice to watch play was too casual and the more direct approach by the Fifers proved more profitable. A fine header (82) brought them a deserved win. By that time Thistle had nothing left in the tank.
Mon-20-Sep-1971 [a] (0-1) L0-2 St Johnstone (League Cup Quarter Final, 1st leg)
– Thistle seemed content to play a holding midfield game and were seldom seen as an attacking force. St Johnstone took the lead (11) through a magnificent header by Connolly who was a constant threat. They came close to a second goal with a header from a free-kick by Lambie (yes, it is he). When Thistle did venture forward they found St Johnstone's off-side trap a problem. Glavin found himself in the clear just on half-time but shot straight at the keeper. In the second half he was unlucky to see a 25-yard drive bounce back off the crossbar. Two minutes later, from the same distance, ex-JAG Whitelaw gave St Johnstone a 2-goal cushion. A disappointing performance. Perhaps their 5-2-3 formation was too defensively minded but it left Thistle with it all to do in the second leg.
Sat-20-Sep-1969 [a] (0-1) L1-2 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 5)
– 17th v 16th. Ex-JAG Staite was stretchered off with a head wound but he returned after 10 mins. Reid cleared off the line when Dick dropped a shot, then Clyde missed a good chance before Staite scored (36). Duncan scored after a goal line scramble (65) but Clyde got the winner (79). Down to 2nd bottom.
Sat-20-Sep-1958 [h] (2-1) W3-1 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Falkirk scored with a pen (6). Thistle were unlucky in front of goal but Wright levelled (14) when his cleared shot was adjudged to have gone in then a Kerr header (20) gave them a deserved half-time lead. Thistle had most of the play but Ledgerwood had a vital fine save before MacKenzie's winner from close in (60).
Sat-20-Sep-1952 [h] (1-3) L1-5 Clyde (SFL Division A - game 3)
– Bottom club Clyde took the lead (3) but Stott equalised (8) after a fine run by Walker. Thistle's attack faded however and Clyde were worth their 3-1 lead at half-time. There was no second half rally and Clyde won easily as the score suggests. Demoralising slow hand-clapping at 4-1 certainly didn't spur Thistle on. Very poor.
Wed-20-Sep-1950 [h] (0-0) W*1-1 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Semi Final replay) aet; * won coin toss
– AET. WTC. The first half was played at a cracking pace. O'Donnell hit the bar with a header before half-time. Walker trundled in a loose ball (47) but when Kinnell was fouled making a clearance the ball broke kindly for Rangers (49). Sharp and Walker came close in ET and Thistle deserved the lucky coin call.
Sat-20-Sep-1947 [a] (2-0) W4-2 Clyde (SFL Division A - game 3)
– McKennan scored (3) then Sharp (15) made it 2-0 at half-time. Mathie increased the lead (49) and Thistle were cruising. 2 goals (a clip when Ledgerwood slipped, 75 and a soft pen, 76) gave Clyde some hope and Thistle the jitters but for once there was no collapse. Sharp lobbed the keeper (80) and all was well.
Sat-20-Sep-1941 [a] (5-1) W7-2 Dumbarton (Southern League - game 7)
– Bottom club Dumbarton scored (6) but once Thistle got into their stride there was no stopping them. Sharp equalised (11) then a 4-goal burst in 10 minutes from Newall (2), Sharp and Gourlay made it 5-1 at half-time. 2 more from Newall after the break (68 and 86, sandwiched between Dumbarton's 2nd) completed the rout.
Sat-20-Sep-1930 [h] (1-0) W2-0 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Thistle were 1-up at half-time through a Ballantyne header (30), rather against the run of play because Clyde had been the better team. He scored again with a drive that went in off a post (75). Clyde were individually good but collectively poor. Thistle went top on goal average with a game in hand.
Sat-20-Sep-1924 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– A brilliant defensive display - especially from Ramsay - foiled Rangers at Ibrox. They were the better all round team but could make no impression on the Thistle rear guard. They even survived a few close things through Ness and Kinloch. The SC reported the replay could go either way.
Sat-20-Sep-1919 [h] (1-0) W2-0 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– Thirds' forwards were poor and although they hit the bar “Adams and Bulloch had them on toast” (SP). Mitchell scored (8) when the ref deemed a half-saved shot to have gone over the line. Harris (N) scored with a header from a cross by Houston late on. Never brilliant but good enough to reach the final.
Sat-20-Sep-1913 [a] (2-0) W2-0 Hibernian (SFL First Division - game 5)
– “A highly creditable win” (GH). The better team in the first half, goals from Marshall and Branscombe set Thistle up for the win. Pinned back for most of the second half, Campbell, Raisbeck and McKenzie were outstanding and earned the 1st ever win away to Hibs in 21 attempts. “keen and interesting” (SC).
Sat-20-Sep-1902 [a] (0-0) W3-0 Port Glasgow Athletic (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Bottom of the league Port Glasgow matched Thistle in mediocrity. Neither team could score but after half-time Connor (Gray?) got the opener and Kennedy got 2. Port fell away after that although Howden saved a pen towards the end. The Port Glasgow Express reported that all 5 forwards were off-side for the first goal.
Sat-20-Sep-1890 [h] (2-2) W4-2 Fairfield (Glasgow Cup 1st Round)
– Fairfield started much the better and were 2-up in 20 minutes. Their forwards were far better than Thistle's but their defence was very poor and once a mistake let Thistle in to reduce the lead they conceded another 3 without reply.
Sat-20-Sep-1884 [h] (?-?) L1-5 Queen's Park (Friendly)
– “The Thistle team, though it worked hard and received every encouragement from its friends, were never in it” (SPM).
Sat-20-Sep-1879 [h] (?-?) W1-0 Possil Bluebell (Friendly)
– It's a third consecutive win-to-nil for the Thistle. “Played at Partick and after a hard and brilliantly contested game resulted in victory for Thistle by one goal to none.“ (NBDM)
