Sat-18-Sep-2021 [h] (0-0) L0-2 Kilmarnock (SPFL Championship - game 6)
– Thistle failed to capitalise when on top and Kilmarnock grew into the game. Sneddon had a fine first half save and parried a pen (52), the rebound fired wide. Two minutes later a clearance hit Holt's face for an OG (52). A 20-yard top-corner strike (65) after poor defending of a long clearance from the keeper sealed the deserved 3 points.
Sat-18-Sep-2010 [a] (1-0) L1-2 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Thistle took the lead (33) through Flannigan from the edge of the box. Queens seldom threatened as Thistle controlled the first 75 minutes and looked comfortable until a cross from the right was blasted in (75). When possession was lost the winner came with a stunning strike from the edge of the box (87). Cruel.
Tue-18-Sep-2007 [a] (0-0) L1-2 Ayr United (Challenge Cup Quarter Final) aet
– AET. Thistle had most of the play by far and went ahead when ex-JAG Forrest scored an OG (65). Ample chances to put the tie safe were squandered and proved costly. A disputed penalty (foul, 86) made it 1-1 then a poor pass back by Robertson was miscued by Tuffey straight to the scorer in the dying seconds of ET.
Sat-18-Sep-2004 [h] (1-0) L1-2 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 7)
– The midfield missing, effort and organisation were lacking. Escalas scored (a fine volley, 8). Panther lost possession, Howie messed up the clearance, ran into Panther and let QOS in for a leveller (64). A 25- yarder (90+) won it. (The added-time sub's 1st touch.) “Howls from the rightly enraged supporters at the end” (GH).
Tue-18-Sep-2001 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Falkirk were in control for most of the match, created most of the chances and had the bulk of possession. Thistle were denied a blatant pen when Britton was felled then Falkirk took a deserved lead (73) but a 25-yard drive from Britton 10 minutes later left the keeper helpless and earned a gutsy draw.
Sat-18-Sep-1999 [h] (0-1) L0-1 Hamilton Academical (SFL Second Division - game 7)
– 10th v 9th.Hamilton scored with a header from an in-swinging corner (3). Thistle stayed bottom. Starting the season with 8 players from the Juniors was proving disastrous. “The players don't know how to use their heads or feet. The magic formula isn't there“ (Lambie).
Sat-18-Sep-1993 [h] (1-0) W1-0 Motherwell (SFL Premier Division - game 7)
– Top of the table Motherwell were often second best in the first half as Thistle's fighting display won the day. Craig's overhead kick shot via a post from a Taylor lob (37) proved to be the only goal. A better second half by Motherwell with their substitutes on had only a marginal effect and Thistle held on comfortably for the win.
Tue-18-Sep-1990 [a] (1-0) W1-0 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Unchanged Thistle had all the early pressure and when Ayr made a mess of a harmless cross McGlashan nipped in for an early goal (3). The performance deteriorated however and Ayr pressed for most of the game. The defence was sound, Duncan had some marvellous saves and Thistle held out for the win.
Sat-18-Sep-1982 [a] (2-1) W3-1 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Still struggling with injuries, an unlikely 1st win. A poor Airdrie side took the lead (19) through future-JAG McGuire but Johnston chipped in a loose ball (21) then Doyle (J) crashed in a 25-yarder (38). Sub McDowall sealed the win 5 minutes from time moving Thistle up to 11th, 6 points off the pace.
Tue-18-Sep-1979 [h] (0-1) D1-1 Bristol City (Anglo-Scottish Cup Quarter Final, 1st leg)
– A header from a free-kick (19) put City ahead. They were the better team throughout and Thistle struggled to make any impact but they earned an undeserved draw when Houston scored with a well-placed header in the dying seconds. Auld was booked for disputing a decision by the referee.
Sat-18-Sep-1976 [h] (1-0) W2-0 Motherwell (SFL Premier Division - game 3)
– It was an unimpressive, but life without Joe Craig - transferred to Celtic - began with Thistle's 1st Premier Div win and goals. A fine move down the left was started by Craig and Somner rattled in a Mackie cross. He turned provider when he released Melrose for the 2nd goal late on.
Sat-18-Sep-1971 [h] (2-1) D2-2 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Coulston, Gibson and Bone all went close. Steady one-way traffic was halted by ex-JAG Flanagan (19) yet Clyde hadn't been seen in attack. Gibson levelled with a cut-back from Lawrie (27) then Coulston headed in (28) for 2-1. Clyde levelled (55) when a shot came off the bar and was headed in. A good game.
Sat-18-Sep-1965 [a] (1-0) L1-3 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Shot-shy forwards gave the keepers an easy time and play was even until Roxburgh fired in a Rae pass (20). It was mostly Thistle until half-time. Roxburgh scooped the ball over from 2 yards then Clyde took over after the break with 3 goals in a devastating 13 minute spell (49, 52, and 62) and ran out easy winners.
Sat-18-Sep-1954 [h] (0-1) L2-3 Clyde (SFL Division A - game 2)
– A hard, bruising derby. Clyde opened (13) and Ledgerwood kept the score down to 1-0 at half-time. 3 minutes into the second half it was 2-0 but MacKenzie headed in from close range to put Thistle back in the game. The Clyde No 7 completed his hat-trick (69) before Smith scored at the far post.
Sat-18-Sep-1948 [h] (6-0) W9-0 Queen of the South (League Cup Division A, Section C - game 2)
– What a difference in 21 days! Queens couldn't cope with Thistle's wingers who did most of the damage. Wright (back from injury) got 3 and Walker scored 2. An O'Donnell hat-trick and one from Kinnell completed the rout to delight most of the 35,000 crowd. “So ruthless in revenge. Coldly planned“ (SP).
Sat-18-Sep-1943 [h] (1-0) W4-0 Albion Rovers (Southern League - game 5)
– The score was tough on Rovers who played some decent stuff and hit the bar twice. It was hard and fast but certainly not cultured football. Newall opened his account (header, 23) then from a cross from the right (56) and got his 3rd (58). The rest of the game was “humdrum” (CE) apart from Hammill's free-kick (89).
Sat-18-Sep-1937 [h] (0-1) L1-3 Morton (SFL First Division - game 8)
– Bottom of the league Morton got their 1st win of the season and were worthy of their win. Leading 1-0 at half-time, they were the better team throughout and scored twice (46 and 49) to rock Thistle. Smith scored from a McSpadyen cross (51) but it made little difference and Morton finished well on top.
Sat-18-Sep-1926 [h] (3-0) W5-0 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 6)
– “Thistle forwards dazzle” (SP). Rampant Thistle went 3 goals up through Hair (2 and 4) then a Gibson pen (10) after Hair had hit the post. Kilmarnock missed a few chances then Hair fired home a spectacular left foot shot for his 3rd (67). Torbet scored (87) to give Thistle a convincing win.
Sat-18-Sep-1920 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– 21,500 saw Thistle dominate this rousing tie in the first half-hour, such was the quality of their play, but a series of blunders in front of goal seemed to demoralise them. Bowie blasted over with the keeper on the ground then a goal (30) put Clyde ahead. The second half was frantic but goalless. Unlucky.
Sat-18-Sep-1915 [a] (1-0) D1-1 Queen's Park (SFL - game 4)
– Queen's policy of trying to play neat, dainty football in stormy, sodden conditions almost back-fired. Leitch gave Thistle the lead (25) when he tapped in a shot from Morrison that the keeper had parried but they had to settle for a draw when Queens scored off a post (70) in a move that was clearly off-side.
Sat-18-Sep-1909 [h] (1-1) W3-1 Dumbarton Harp (Scottish Qualifying Cup 2nd Round)
– 1st ever game at Firhill. “A fast and exciting game” (SC). A defensive mix-up let Carr in to score Firhill's first ever goal. Raisbeck levelled from the spot and Callaghan scored with a fine drive (55) and another Raisbeck pen made it 3-1. 2 Harp players were sent off in a rough last few mins.
Sat-18-Sep-1897 [h] (0-1) L0-6 Rangers (Glasgow Cup 1st Round)
– The first half-hour was even with shots at either end. After 20 minutes Lamont fell on a piece of glass and received a deep 3-inch cut. Down to 10 men, Thistle did well to hold Rangers to 1-0 at half-time but the disadvantage was too much as the game wore on and they scored at will after half-time including one pen.
Sat-18-Sep-1886 [h] (0-3) W4-3 Port Glasgow Athletic (Friendly)
– Port were clearly the better team and Thistle trailed 3-0 at half-time. Johnston reduced the lead then Suter scored from a goalmouth scramble a minute later “amid loud cheers“ (GT). More cheers rang out when he scored again. Port had Thistle under pressure until Suter scored off a post for his hat-trick.
