Fri-15-Sep-2023 [a] (1-0) W4-0 Ayr United (SPFL Championship - game 5)
– McInroy set up Graham for a typical 3 yard "bundle-in" (73 secs). Sneddon who excelled in the torrential rain with a string of fine saves as Ayr enjoyed most of the first half possession. Lawless scored from 25 yards (58) and from 18 yards (67) for 3-0. Adeloye ran through and scored with his first touch (81). TV timing suggests 16 secs after he came on.
Sat-15-Sep-2018 [a] (0-3) L2-3 Inverness Caledonian Thistle (SPFL Championship - game 5)
– ICT scored with their first attack (rebound off a post headed in, 10). Bell fisted out a corner that was returned with interest (22) then a pen (foul, 32) made it 3. Storey's pen was parried (40) but he missed the rebound. Spittal and Doolan scored from close in (82 and 93) in a spirited second half but the first half was awful.
Fri-15-Sep-2017 [h] (0-1) D2-2 Rangers (SPFL Premiership - game 6)
– An angled drive gave Rangers a half-time lead (19). Thistle levelled through a deflected Spittal free-kick (50) then he set up Erskine at the far post with a low cross (60). Erskine was red-carded (67). The 10 men defended strongly but a top corner strike (77) levelled things. A spirited, robust performance earned a point.
Sat-15-Sep-2012 [a] (1-0) W2-1 Livingston (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Another impressive performance playing some slick passing football. Lawless scored off the underside of the bar (38), Erskine hit the post then a Livingston shot had the same fate. An angled drive from Lawless (48) made it 2-0 but slack defending at a corner let Livingston in on the hour mark.
Sat-15-Sep-2007 [a] (0-0) L1-2 St Johnstone (SFL First Division - game 6)
– There were few chances created in this game. Much fancied St Johnstone seldom threatened but just as a draw was beginning to look likely they scored twice (a header, 72 and from 25 yards,74). Keeper Main hit a clearance off Buchanan (86) then Thistle were denied a penalty in the hectic final minutes.
Wed-15-Sep-2004 [a] (0-0) L*1-1 Ross County (Challenge Cup Quarter Final) aet; * L3-5 pens
– AET. Lost 3-5 on pens. The game plan went out the window when Milne was sent off (3) but the 10 men coped well and were seldom under pressure. County scored (67) but Panther levelled a few minutes later. Hinds hit the bar and Oné went close but it ended 1-1 and went to penalties.
Sat-15-Sep-2001 [h] (2-0) W3-0 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Clyde were better early on before Britton rounded the keeper for 1-0 (11). McKinstry was flattened with an elbow as the game got nasty but he got his revenge when he cut inside and cracked in a magnificent goal (34). Clyde were better after half-time and Klein had some fine saves then Britton got his 2nd with a tap-in (72).
Sat-15-Sep-1990 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Clydebank (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Defences were on top in the first half which saw lots of effort but poor finishing. Clydebank's keeper Gallacher gave a tremendous display. A hopeful shot from 25-yards was deflected past Duncan for the winner (47). A Charnley pen was saved (52) then several brilliant saves kept Thistle at bay.
Tue-15-Sep-1987 [h] (1-1) L1-2 Dumbarton (SFL First Division - game 8)
– A half-hit shot was pounced on by Kelly and Thistle took the lead (19) but a dipping shot just under the bar put bottom Dumbarton level (29). A silly push in the box gifted them a pen (82) and up stepped O Coyle (who else?) to take the points. “I must ask the fans to exercise patience” (Lamont).
Sat-15-Sep-1984 [h] (0-1) L0-1 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Chances at both ends came to nothing and just as Thistle got on top, league leaders Airdrie scored from the spot (foul by Carson, 26). A clearance off the line then a good Brough save prevented it from being worse. Thistle made no impression after half-time and Hamill was sent off (foul on keeper).
Wed-15-Sep-1982 [a] (1-1) L1-2 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Thistle went 1-up in (6) with a goal from O'Hara but proceeded to throw the lead away in this towsy match. Ayr scored with a penalty just before half-time then a second penalty gave them their winner. To complete a miserable evening, Dunlop (who conceded both penalties) was stretchered off with a suspected broken ankle.
Sat-15-Sep-1979 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Kilmarnock (SFL Premier Division - game 5)
– “Nothing continued to happen“. “Awful“ (GH). A brilliant overhead kick on the line denied McAdam with an early header. Thistle had the bulk of the play but were almost caught out just after half-time with a shot into the side netting. The forwards were poor and the Kilmarnock keeper had some fine saves.
Sat-15-Sep-1973 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Morton (SFL First Division - game 3)
– The teams (both pointless) went at it from the start but the keepers were in good form; the shooting was erratic. Houston was sent off (retaliation, 33) but ironically Thistle had the better chances after that. Defences were on top but Gibson was a constant threat. Had his finishing been better it could have been a win.
Tue-15-Sep-1970 [a] (0-1) D1-1 Queen's Park (SFL Second Division - game 4)
– Queens played some excellent football and a good inter-passing move (33) gave them a deserved half-time lead. Thistle fought back after the break and, increasingly desperate up against a solid defence, had to settle for a Smith pen (80) after McQuade had been pulled down in the box.
Sat-15-Sep-1962 [a] (1-2) L1-2 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 3)
– “Niven the magnificent…stems the Ibrox goal rush“ (ET). A patchy game with neither team playing to potential. A McParland cross was knocked in by McBride (26) but Rangers scored when Niven couldn't hold a 30-yarder (40) then from close in (44). McBride played with his leg strapped up in a poor second half.
Tue-15-Sep-1959 [a] (3-1) W4-3 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Semi Final replay)
– Thistle were the better team and led 3-1 at half-time thanks to Harvey (15), Brown (33) and Thomson (45). Clyde had equalised (27). Fleming scored with a header soon after half-time and the game looked over until Clyde scored on 74 and 78 (soft pen) but Thistle were comfortable despite the closeness of the score.
Sat-15-Sep-1956 [h] (1-1) W2-1 Cowdenbeath (League Cup Quarter Final, 2nd leg) agg: W4-2
– AGG 4-2. Injury-hit Thistle lived dangerously as Cowdenbeath pressed. After some chaotic defending, Smith opened the scoring with a header (20) but it was level 2 minutes later. A Davidson blunder led to a brilliant save by Ledgerwood to keep it at 1-1. Cowdenbeath pressed but a Smith header (84) settled the nerves.
Sat-15-Sep-1951 [h] (1-0) D1-1 Morton (SFL Division A - game 2)
– Walker was upended in the box but bizarrely the ref gave a free-kick. McGowan shot past but the ref ordered a re-take and Stott scored for a merited lead (11). Ledgerwood had a scare when he dropped the ball but was beaten when Morton scored (55). The game died away as Morton lost a player (concussion heading the ball).
Sat-15-Sep-1945 [h] (0-1) W2-1 Queen of the South (Southern League, Division A - game 6)
– A Curran pass-back OG after 30 secs gifted Queens the lead. Gradually Thistle got on top and McInnes equalised (53). A spectacular 25-yarder by Brown (the ball never rising more than a foot off the ground) won the points (57). Queens (who had been out of football for 5 years) faded badly towards the end.
Wed-15-Sep-1937 [a] (1-0) W3-1 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Kilmarnock had chances but their finishing was weak. In addition, all 3 Thistle goals were well taken but came from blunders. Wallace (5) put Thistle 1-up but Kilmarnock deservedly levelled (65). Watson rounded the keeper for 2-1 then an OG sealed it, a defender attempting to clear. McSpadyen was the best forward on view.
Sat-15-Sep-1934 [a] (1-2) L1-2 St Johnstone (SFL First Division - game 8)
– Thistle might have drawn against top of the league St Johnstone had their forwards been more effective. Miller made it 1-0 (14) but when a long shot came back off the bar, the rebound was tucked away (24). A snap shot at a goalmouth scramble gave Saints the lead at half-time. The game deteriorated with numerous fouls and few chancies at either end.
Sat-15-Sep-1928 [a] (3-2) L4-5 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Another see-saw battle with Thistle taking a 2-goal lead inside 10 minutes through Ness and Hair. Top= Motherwell scored twice but Hair with a header restored the lead at half-time. Three goals after the break by Motherwell made it 5-3. Ballantyne got a 4th but it was too late. “An enticing contest” (GH).
Sat-15-Sep-1923 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– An end-to-end, entertaining tie. Both keepers were in magnificent form and kept the forwards at bay. Blair and Salisbury had fine games. It could have gone either way up until the winner came from a corner (80) then a brilliant save denied Blair at the end. Unlucky Thistle were worthy of at least a replay.
Sat-15-Sep-1917 [a] (1-0) L1-2 Celtic (SFL - game 5)
– An excellent opening 20 minutes by Thistle saw Marshall score first. Perversely, when Celtic were reduced to 10 men (30), they fell out of the game and 2 goals in the second half saw them defeated. Bowie was outstanding and (not unconnected) was “subjected to considerable abuse“ (SP) by some of the crowd.
Sat-15-Sep-1906 [h] (2-2) W3-2 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Thistle scored with a shot from McGregor “which could not be called unsavable” (GH). Gibson beat 2 men and scored from 20 yards but 2 quick goals (the 1st a penalty) made it 2-2. McGregor scored just after half-time and Thistle held on thanks to sound defence and weak Motherwell finishing.
Sat-15-Sep-1900 [h] (1-0) W2-0 Normal Athletic (Glasgow Cup 1st Round)
– Goals by Paul in the first half (after good work by Hyslop) and Hyslop himself after the break saw Thistle (pretty much at full strength) through against amateur opposition who were pinned back in defence for long spells.
Sat-15-Sep-1894 [h] (3-1) W3-1 Cambuslang (Glasgow Cup 1st Round)
– Thistle attacked; Cambuslang scored (3). After some fine saves by the visitors' keeper it was 3-1 at half-time with goals from Proudfoot, Freebairn and Campbell. The second half was uneventful but they played for much of it with 10 men because Campbell had a 2-inch gash along his forehead. He was carried off to be stitched.
Sat-15-Sep-1888 [a] (1-1) W5-3 Maryhill (Glasgow Cup 1st Round)
– Johnston opened the scoring but it was 1-1 at half-time. Maryhill then took the lead but Thistle equalised. They had most of the pressure but went 3-2 down. They equalised through Marshall and went on to score twice more. A much tougher game than might have been expected.
Sat-15-Sep-1883 [h] (6-0) W8-2 Falkirk (Friendly)
– Falkirk may have been glad Thistle played with 10 men throughout. They led 6-0 at half-time but the second half was a more even contest and Falkirk (who lost a man to injury on the hour mark) had Thistle pressed back for long spells and scored a couple of late goals to at least draw the second half.
