Sat-14-Sep-2024 [a] (0-1) D1-1 Ayr United (SPFL Championship - game 5)
– Thistle adopted a 3-5-2 formation. A soft retaken pen for handball against Muirhead (25) - Roberts saved but was off his line - put top of the league United in front. Thistle were the better team for long spells after h-t and a cross by Turner was headed in by Milne (74). There were chances at both ends but a point was well deserved in the light of recent form.
Sat-14-Sep-2013 [h] (0-2) L0-3 Aberdeen (SPFL Premiership - game 6)
– Out-paced, out-muscled. Fox had a string of fine saves but poor defending meant Aberdeen got their goals cheaply. Goals from close in at a corner (13), after failure to clear their lines (20) and a driving run and shot across Fox (69) ensured it was no contest. Higginbotham hit the post (80). Well beaten.
Sat-14-Sep-2002 [h] (1-0) D1-1 Dundee (Scottish Premier League - game 7)
– Thistle dominated much of this match but paid the price in points for poor finishing by Mitchell, Burns and Hardie. Mitchell tapped in a driven Burns cross just before half-time. Dundee equalised just after the restart (Paterson mistake when he gave away a needless throw-in). Burns and Buchan hit the woodwork.
Sat-14-Sep-1996 [h] (0-1) D1-1 Stirling Albion (SFL First Division - game 5)
– The strips were AC Milan v Ajax but that's where the resemblance ended. Thistle struggled against newly promoted Albion and going 1-down (glancing header from a corner, 20) the ire of the fans was directed at Macleod. Henderson with time and space scored (56) then a fine save denied Evans a winner (83).
Sat-14-Sep-1991 [h] (3-0) W5-0 Raith Rovers (SFL First Division - game 7)
– A demolition job on Rovers. Farningham, helped himself to a first half hat-trick (deflected 25-yarder, 18, header from Shaw cross, 40 and a header from Johnston's cross, 44). McGlashan caused all sorts of bother and a twisting, turning run made it 4-0 (48). Rovers hit the bar but English made it 5-0 (90).
Sat-14-Sep-1985 [h] (0-0) L1-2 Alloa Athletic (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Herd almost scored as chances came and went. Alloa rode their luck as Thistle hit the woodwork 3 times but they took the lead when a header off a post was knocked in (60). McKenzie slammed home a loose ball (89) only for Alloa to score (90). “We should have won by the length of Maryhill Rd” (Rooney).
Wed-14-Sep-1983 [a] (3-2) W4-3 Alloa Athletic (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Johnston (4) then O'Hara from 20 yards (6) and a top notch finish by Johnston (15) put Thistle (in all-white) well in control but Alloa's first league goals of the season made it 3-2 at half-time. McNab dropped the ball and almost caused a goal then a McDowall header (68) made it 4. Fighting Alloa scored (85) and panic set in.
Tue-14-Sep-1976 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Bolton Wanderers (Anglo-Scottish Cup Quarter Final, 1st leg)
– With representatives of 8 English top-flight clubs watching, Rough and Hansen (A) had magnificent games. Second Division Bolton never looked like breaking down resolute Thistle who had the best chance of the night when Somner, having just come on as a sub, shot wide with just the keeper to beat late on.
Sat-14-Sep-1974 [h] (0-2) L1-5 Hibernian (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Dropping Rough had no effect as the young Thistle side were well beaten by a brilliant Hibs (sitting top of the league). It was even for half an hour then Hibs scored twice before half-time. Poor play and self-inflicted wounds were severely punished and it was 5-0 before Craig scored near the end.
Sat-14-Sep-1968 [h] (2-0) W4-0 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 2)
– A Gibson header from a McLindon cross (11) made it 1-0 then after 4 shots had rebounded from defenders in a wild scramble Flanagan slotted home (34). Clyde rallied and McLindon cleared off the line but Coulston got the 3rd (54). Clyde hit bar and post before Bone scored from the spot (71) for a good win.
Sat-14-Sep-1963 [h] (0-2) L0-3 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A Forrest hat-trick gave Rangers an easy win. Goals on 25, 29 and 51 minutes killed off Thistle who struggled continuously and almost never worried Rangers. But for some magnificent saves by Niven it could have been much worse. Only Cunningham and Duffy impressed and new signing Yard got no service.
Sat-14-Sep-1957 [a] (1-0) D2-2 East Fife (SFL First Division - game 2)
– After 2 point-blank saves Thistle eventually took the lead with a Mallon header from Ewing's cross (27). East Fife missed a good chance just on half-time but hit Thistle with 2 quick goals (55 and 58) with the defence looking shaky but McParland scored (79) to take a share of the points.
Sat-14-Sep-1946 [a] (1-2) D2-2 Aberdeen (SFL Division A - game 9)
– A fighting rear-guard action won Thistle a draw with the defence - Steadward in particular - excellent. Top of the league Aberdeen scored twice (12, suspiciously off-side and 21) then Smith scored a fine goal (35). Glover levelled (77) for a hard-earned point in a bruising match with numerous injuries for both teams.
Sat-14-Sep-1940 [a] (1-1) L1-3 Morton (Southern League - game 6)
– Thistle had little to offer in attack. They forgot to utilise McSpadyen who was available again after a lengthy suspension. A defensive error let in Younger to level but, in truth, Morton should have won more comfortably than with just two second half goals.
Sat-14-Sep-1935 [h] (1-0) W2-0 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 7)
– The defence was sound but the forwards made heavy weather of things, missing numerous chances. McKennan scored when a McSpadyen header came off the bar and he knocked home the rebound (36). Hastie doubled the lead (71) with a header from an Elliott cross but it was a struggle.
Sat-14-Sep-1929 [a] (1-0) W2-0 Cowdenbeath (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Rae and Turner made their debuts. Both sides wasted early chances through rash finishing before Turner scored from a difficult angle. Jackson was the busier keeper but was seldom troubled after half-time and Simpson scored with a late fast drive that the keeper left alone. Slightly flattered by 2-0.
Sat-14-Sep-1918 [a] (0-0) L0-2 Rangers (SFL - game 4)
– Rangers maintained their 100% record but it took 2 unsavable shots late on to overcome a stubborn Thistle side. Stewart was in brilliant form again but the forwards were disjointed and never seriously threatened the Rangers keeper. Rangers, who also hit the post, always had more to offer up front.
Sat-14-Sep-1912 [h] (1-0) W3-1 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– King scored with a low shot (5) with Thirds' international keeper looking suspect. Thistle's young forwards posed problems and Branscombe beat 3 men and took a return pass from Callaghan -the keeper getting his fingertips to the shot. Thirds scored with a penalty before Branscombe scored again.
Sat-14-Sep-1907 [h] (0-0) D1-1 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Erratic shooting cost Thistle a win in this tie. They had the best of the chances in the first half, Thirds in the 2nd. A centre from McGregor set up Kennedy for the opening goal but Thirds equalised in the dying minutes. “A fitting termination to a cleanly fought game” (GH).
Sat-14-Sep-1901 [h] (4-0) W6-1 Cameronians (Glasgow Cup 1st Round)
– The visitors were seldom over the half-way line and Thistle led 4-0 at half-time. They eased off in the second half and Cameronians reduced the leeway but Conner scored 2 late goals for an emphatic win. “Thistle have an excellent combination and give promise of doing well” (AN).
Sat-14-Sep-1889 [h] (2-2) W3-2 Cambuslang (Friendly)
– There were chances at both ends before Thistle went ahead through Johnston but soon it was 1-1. Johnston set up Freebairn to put Thistle ahead but it as 2-2 at half-time following a corner. Thistle scored the only goal after the break through Ferguson to win a well-contested match.
