matches (10th September)

Sat-10-Sep-2016 [h] (0-1) L0-2 St Johnstone (SPFL Premiership - game 4)
– Lethargic performance. A bright start faded once Saints went ahead (21) from an oblique angle at the far post. Build-up from the back was too slow. Sub Edwards made a difference but when he gave the ball away, a fine strike killed Thistle off (64). Virtually no shots on target, another injury to Cerny. Down to the bottom.
Sat-10-Sep-2011 [a] (0-1) D2-2 Ross County (SFL First Division - game 5)
– A soft penalty (13) gave County the lead. Doolan went close with a header, Fox had a fine save then Elliot saw his shot well saved. Slack defending early in the second half saw County make it 2-0 but Cairney scored with a penalty (73) then several chances were missed before Erskine fired home for a point (89). County had a man sent off (72).
Sat-10-Sep-2005 [a] (1-2) D2-2 Ayr United (SFL Second Division - game 5)
– Thistle should have won this game. They went 1-down following a corner (6) but they responded well and Santala (his 1st game up front) equalised (25) only for poor defending to make it 2-1 at half-time. Ayr were reduced to 10 men then Santala equalised (73) before McCulloch was red-carded (off the ball incident, 85).
Tue-10-Sep-1996 [a] (1-2) L1-2 Greenock Morton (Challenge Cup Quarter Final)
– Morton went 2-up (2 and a simple ball over the top, 14) but Thistle played some of their best football of the season. There were fine saves from Henderson and Lyons before Evans scored (40). Morton hit the bar (49) but it was mostly Thistle on the attack in the second half but the chances dried up. Pity about the start.
Sat-10-Sep-1994 [h] (0-2) L1-2 Celtic (SFL Premier Division - game 4)
– £1.75m man O'Donnell scored 2 on his debut (11 and 43) but shocking defending eased Celtic's task. A better performance after half-time saw Thistle more is the game as Celtic eased off. Grant pulled 1 back (73) but it should have been all over by half-time. Pittman was sent off for a soft 2nd yellow (89).
Sat-10-Sep-1988 [a] (2-0) L2-3 Forfar Athletic (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Thistle went ahead when McCoy drew the keeper and Flood tapped in (37). The keeper blocked a Thomson shot for Mitchell to knock in (42). It was looking good but the second half was a disaster. McCoy blasted over from 2 yards then poor defending led to 2 quick goals and a pen (hand ball, 78) left Thistle 2nd bottom.
Sat-10-Sep-1983 [a] (1-0) W1-0 Dumbarton (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A good win against joint-top Dumbarton. A midfield scrap at first, chances started to appear at both ends and both keepers had fine saves. A blistering free-kick by Watson was the pick of the bunch. A 30-yard drive pile driver by Doyle (J) proved to be the only goal (44) as Thistle went top.
Sat-10-Sep-1977 [a] (3-0) W4-0 Clydebank (SFL Premier Division - game 4)
– There was nothing much between the teams but goals by Love (a 20-yard shot in the top corner in 40 secs and a shot from wide right, 29) and Melrose (flying header, 39) made it 3-0 at half-time. Clydebank hit the post. Somner completed the scoring (86) in a poor second half. The score flattered Thistle. Up to 3rd bottom.
Wed-10-Sep-1975 [h] (3-0) W4-0 Clydebank (League Cup Quarter Final, 1st leg)
– Houston gave Thistle the lead (3) from 6 yards, the Clydebank defence all at sea. A cracking drive by Somner from 18 yards (29) and a header by McQuade at a corner (40) and it was all over. The second half was a formality and Somner scored with a penalty (82) when he was nudged off the ball.
Sat-10-Sep-1966 [a] (0-3) L1-6 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Only McParland, Flanagan (who had a shot cleared off the line just after half-time) and Duncan earned pass marks. It took Rangers only 8 minutes to start the scoring and they were 5-up before Flanagan's 25-yard shot slipped through the keeper's fingers (85). Even then, Rangers had time for another. Overwhelmed.
Sat-10-Sep-1960 [h] (2-1) W3-1 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Thistle's 12th consecutive game in Glasgow started badly when Clyde took the lead (5). Hogan slammed the leveller in (10) then Smith dashed in and robbed the keeper of a cross (14). Clyde hit the post just on half-time. McParland scored with an unsavable shot from 20 yards (52) and Thistle dominated till the end.
Wed-10-Sep-1958 [h] (0-1) W2-1 Arbroath (League Cup Quarter Final, 1st leg)
– Arbroath withstood Thistle's early pressure and took the lead (17) through a Davidson og. Weakened by injuries, they more than held their own until Wright took a pass from MacKenzie and equalised (70) and Donlevy headed the winner from a corner (83). A gallant display by Arbroath. Their stars were all in defence.
Sat-10-Sep-1955 [a] (0-1) D1-1 Dunfermline Athletic (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Both teams missed chances before newly promoted Dunfermline took the lead (35) after a shot was deflected into the path of the scorer. They then missed a good chance to go 2-up before half-time. Thistle fought back and after Bell and MacKenzie had seen shots saved, McParland got the equaliser via a post.
Wed-10-Sep-1952 [h] (2-0) W4-2 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– Sharp was international class in this match and opened the scoring (12) then with delightful skill set up Howitt (41). Thirds scored (57) then levelled (65) when 3 Thistle defenders left the ball to each other but it was Thistle's night. Sharp's searching passes let in Walker (68 and 75) and Stott hit the post.
Sat-10-Sep-1949 [a] (0-2) L0-2 Rangers (SFL Division A - game 1)
– Rangers took the lead (21) then a deflected shot put them 2-up (40). Thistle hearts were broken when a magnificent save denied Walker (61). Along with MacKenzie he was in brilliant form but there was no-one to put the ball in the net. Unimpressive Rangers were flattered by the score.
Sat-10-Sep-1938 [h] (1-1) W2-1 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 6)
– An excellent match in which a McKennan pen for hand ball (82) inflicted top of the league Clyde's first defeat. McKennan and McCrindle combined to set up Wallace for the opener (25) but it was 1-1 (43). The second half was end to end stuff with narrow escapes for both teams until the pen winner.
Sat-10-Sep-1932 [h] (1-2) L2-3 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Clyde's No 9 caught Donnelly in possession (11) then a loose ball from a parried save by Jackson made it 2-0 (21). Dickson and Wyllie scored (30 and 65) and Clyde were on the ropes defending desperately at 2-2 but the centre got his 3rd (78) against the run of play. Dickson missed a sitter late on.
Sat-10-Sep-1927 [h] (0-4) L0-6 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Rangers were in brilliant form and outplayed a young Thistle side to lead 4-0 at half-time. Hair was injured, was a passenger on the wing for part of the match and finally had to go off. Jackson was loudly cheered off because the 45,000 crowd saw a magnificent display from him despite the score.
Sat-10-Sep-1921 [a] (0-0) W1-0 Queen's Park (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Bottom club Queens seldom threatened - but neither did Thistle. The teams lacked punch up front. Blair scored the only goal when he pounced on a scrambled clearance by the goalkeeper with a shot in the corner (60). There was nothing between the teams but it was a win (if unimpressive). Poor fare.
Sat-10-Sep-1910 [h] (0-0) L1-2 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Thistle started off at a cracking pace but several good chances were wasted. Once Celtic settled, it was “dour, determined“ defence (SC) and it was effective for about 70 mins. 2 quick goals for (the first a goal kick by Howden straight to the scorer) Celtic killed the tie although Gardiner pulled one back near the end from close in on a breakaway.
Sat-10-Sep-1904 [h] (2-0) W2-0 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– The match had hardly got going before Clyde were reduced to 10 men through injury to their No 9. McIlvenny gave Thistle the lead (20) then he scored again after a fine run by Kennedy. Clyde's 10 men fought on but they missed a penalty early in the second half and an open goal towards the end.
Sat-10-Sep-1898 [h] (0-2) L0-3 St Bernard's (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Thistle (showing a number of changes) made a few chances but failed to take them. Shocking defending contributed to a 2-0 deficit at half-time. A better showing in the second half came to nothing and Saints scored again. They remained bottom of the league - on merit - being Glasgow's only pointless club.
Sat-10-Sep-1892 [a] (0-1) W2-1 Cambuslang (Scottish Alliance - game 3)
– Cambuslang took the lead (40) with a long shot that beat Simpson and they hit the post soon after half-time but eventually Thistle got the upper hand and two quick goals turned things round. Thistle finished the better team and but for good goalkeeping, it could have been a more emphatic win.
Sat-10-Sep-1887 [a] (1-0) L2-3 Morton (Friendly)
– Morton hit the post early on but it was Thistle who led at half-time (Johnston). In the second half Suter added a second but Morton went on to score three, the winner coming very late on. Thistle “scored” a disputed goal at 2-2 and “there was danger of a sudden stoppage but the men finally retook their places” (GT).
Sat-10-Sep-1881 [a] (2-0) W3-1 Mavisbank (Scottish Cup 1st Round)
– Thistle had most of the play in the first half and they went a goal up through Inglis. MacKay then scored with a fine header. In the second half Young scored after goalmouth scramble. Towards the end a long shot took the Thistle goalkeeper by surprise.
