Sat-09-Sep-2023 [h] (1-2) L2-3 Queen of the South (Challenge Cup 3rd Round)
– A case of poor finishing and defending, bad luck, and the post (twice). A thunderous volley at a corner put Queens ahead (7) but when Stanway was fouled Lawless scored from the spot (11). A header at the back post put Queens ahead (24). Stanway levelled with a header (48). Having made enough chances to win 3 games, a header (87) won it for Queens.
Sat-09-Sep-2017 [a] (1-0) D1-1 Ross County (SPFL Premiership - game 5)
– Thistle were going nowhere until Spittal latched on to a throw-in (22) against the run of play. Long spells of County pressure saw fine defending and Scully (replaced Cerny, 33) played his part. Finally, just as 3 points looked possible, panic in the box led to a soft pen (86). 1 point. 3 would have been welcome if undeserved.
Sun-09-Sep-2012 [h] (0-0) W3-0 Raith Rovers (Challenge Cup Quarter Final)
– Raith Rovers closed Thistle down well and had the better chances before Thistle settled. Erskine drilled home a Craig cross (50) then Craig bundled home an Erskine cross (53). A wonderful sweeping move ended with an Erskine shot (58) to put the game well beyond Rovers. Fox had a fine late save.
Sat-09-Sep-2006 [h] (0-3) L1-5 St Johnstone (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Thistle couldn't match a fine St Johnstone side (managed (haunted?) by O Coyle). A Donnelly penalty (77) was the only crumb of comfort. Saints coasted and scored at will (1, 6, 43, 64 and 90). “Thistle going backwards as visitors take it easy” (GH). One to forget quickly and move on. “I am very angry” (Campbell).
Sat-09-Sep-2000 [a] (0-0) W1-0 Queen's Park (SFL Second Division - game 5)
– There was little to report in the first half. Wild shooting meant the keepers were idle. Hardie missed the best chance from 4 yards. After half-time Thistle were much more positive and Lennon cracked in a 20-yarder after a corner was only partially cleared (61). It should have been more. QP's 100% record gone.
Sat-09-Sep-1995 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Motherwell (SFL Premier Division - game 2)
– A truly awful game, strewn with mistakes. The keeper kicked the ball straight out to Foster but he wasted the chance. Walker saved the 1st shot on target (60) then McDonald scored with a loose clearance at the 2nd attempt (84). Walker unaccountably palmed a cross that was going wide into his net for an OG (88).
Sat-09-Sep-1989 [a] (3-0) W4-1 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Lambie's return to Hamilton as manager was an emphatic win set up by a Campbell side foot (29). He scored again through the keeper's legs (36) then he set up Dinnie for the 3rd (41). Thistle slackened off and Accies scored (57) but Peebles connected with a Campbell dummy (80) make it 4-1.
Sat-09-Sep-1978 [h] (2-0) W3-2 Heart of Midlothian (SFL Premier Division - game 4)
– Park from Hearts/Craig and McQuade from Thistle made their debuts. Thistle went ahead with a Melrose flying header (15) then Somner (43 and pen, 55) made it 3-0. A soft pen for hand ball by Love made it 3-1 (76) then a header (83) made for a frantic ending but desperate defending saw Thistle win deservedly.
Sat-09-Sep-1972 [a] (1-1) L1-2 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Rangers had the bulk of the chances but Glavin was brought down and Forsyth scored with the pen (30). A last-gasp clearance denied Coulston a 2nd goal. A header from a corner (42) put things level. Rangers hit the woodwork twice, Reid cleared off the line then Johnston scored (69) and was sent off (70).
Wed-09-Sep-1970 [h] (2-0) D3-3 Dumbarton (League Cup Quarter Final, 1st leg)
– McQuade (a 25-yard run, beating several defenders) and Bone (a tap in from a rebound off the keeper) gave Thistle a 2-0 lead (22) but they fell apart in the second half. Dumbarton pulled things level (57) and although Bone headed in a rebound off the bar (63), Dumbarton (with ex-JAG Muir) deserved their equaliser from a Strachan OG (71).
Sat-09-Sep-1967 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Stout defending by Niven and McKinnon and very poor forward play restricted Rangers to a goal in each half (39 and 75). The game was almost entirely one of continuous Rangers pressure. “Determination and vigour” (GH) were not enough and Thistle's neat midfield work went unfinished up front.
Sat-09-Sep-1961 [h] (0-2) L1-4 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 2)
– The teams were evenly matched for the first 20 minutes or so. Williamson and Ewing posed early problems but Rangers went 2 ahead on the half-hour with some sparkling forward play. 2 quick goals after the break (including an OG by McKinnon) killed Thistle off. Muir scored with a lob (89) but it meant little.
Fri-09-Sep-1955 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– Weakened Celtic were still too much for Thistle who had trouble passing and shooting. Celtic's forwards weren't much better but they capitalised on a mistake by Kerr to take the lead (24). A shot that hit the post, ran along the line and went in (83). The holders were out tamely “surprisingly lacking in effort” (GH).
Thu-09-Sep-1954 [a] (1-1) D2-2 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Semi Final replay) aet
– AET. Smith opened (32) when he pounced on a poor pass-back but bad defending let Celtic in to level (35) then they hit the woodwork twice before half-time. The second half was a succession of fouls and poor play. Celtic scored with a rebounded pen (110) but McParland scored (113) with an innocent-looking low grounder.
Sat-09-Sep-1950 [h] (2-1) W5-2 Raith Rovers (SFL Division A - game 1)
– Thistle went 2-up through McCallum and O'Donnell (10 and 17) but Rovers fought back with 2 headers to level (30 and 51). Walker (yards off-side) made it 3-2 (62). Ledgerwood had 3 magnificent saves before MacKenzie scored (73). O'Donnell made it 5 (89) but on play Thistle were flattered by the score.
Sat-09-Sep-1944 [h] (1-1) W4-2 Clyde (Southern League - game 4)
– A fast and furious battle in which play of both sides was of high quality (GH). Johnson (Stockport County) made his debut and impressed. Colgan opened the scoring (22) but it was 1-1 just after half-time. He made it 2-1 (55) then Johnson scored (70). Unbeaten Clyde scored (72) before Gourlay (80). Up to 6th.
Sat-09-Sep-1933 [a] (2-0) D3-3 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 6)
– It was a good game and incident packed. Thistle were the better moving team when at full strength and McLean (3) and McLeod (27) put them 2-up. McLeod was injured (30) and limped on the wing thereafter. Clyde stormed back and went ahead with 15 minutes to play but McLeod scored again (87).
Wed-09-Sep-1931 [h] (1-1) D1-1 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– 4 days later there were occasional skilful passages of play but generally the shooting was poor. Ness touched in a parried header by Ballantyne (12) following a Torbet free-kick but Clyde levelled just on half-time. Thistle had most of the play in the second half and should have won. Torbet fired a penalty wide.
Wed-09-Sep-1925 [a] (0-4) L1-5 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final replay)
– Once Celtic scored (5) it was no contest. Ramsay had some magnificent saves but Celtic were unstoppable and led 4-0 at half-time. Ness hit the bar and he missed an open goal from 3 yards. Celtic hit the post before they scored again. Gibson scored (80) following a corner for a crumb of comfort.
Sat-09-Sep-1922 [h] (2-1) W2-1 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Showing 6 changes, Thistle were not great - just good enough. There was little between the teams but their forwards were better. McKechnie gave them the lead (10) but Ayr levelled (25) before a fine individual effort by Templeton resulted in what proved to be the winning goal (35). Defences prevailed after half-time.
Tue-09-Sep-1919 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Kilmarnock (SFL - game 6)
– 7,000 saw this match which doubled as a testimonial for Willie Bulloch. There was nothing between the teams in a goalless first half. Eventually Thistle got on top and a shot by McMullan from 20 yards put them ahead. Kilmarnock rallied then Whittle went off injured but the defence was sound and held out.
Sat-09-Sep-1916 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Already weakened through injury, Thistle played for 55 minutes with 10 men, Morrison going off injured. The game could have gone either way but the rearranged formation wasn't able to make much of an impression. It was 1-0 at half-time (Adams at fault) and a 2nd goal killed off Thistle's brave second half challenge.
Sat-09-Sep-1911 [a] (1-3) D3-3 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– “Five soft goals and a blunder” (DR). Aimless cross deflected in (0-1). Celtic completely caught napping at Raisbeck's quickly taken free-kick (1-1). Spilled save by Campbell tapped in (1-2). More poor goalkeeping (1-3). Defensive errors let in Allan (2-3). Elmore first to a dodgy pass-back (3-3).
Sat-09-Sep-1905 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 4)
– A mistake by Gibson (75) led to an undeserved equaliser for Dundee. Up till then Thistle had been the better team. Sommen scored (47) and 2 points looked on the cards. Dundee's goal rejuvenated them and they had a goal disallowed near the end. Unlucky on the day.
Sat-09-Sep-1899 [a] (1-0) L1-2 Leith Athletic (SFL Second Division - game 4)
– With wind, sun and better football all in their favour, a goal by Proudfoot gave Thistle a half-time lead. Eventually Leith began to take control however and McDonald made no attempt to save a free-kick, thinking it was indirect. “A swift, low shot” (SC) left him helpless and won both points.
Sat-09-Sep-1893 [a] (0-3) L1-3 Airdrieonians (Scottish Cup 1st Preliminary Round replay)
– Airdrie took the lead (8) and 2 more goals made for a difficult second half. Thistle were unlucky at times and the half-time score was a bit misleading. The Airdrie keeper watched a ball going past him thinking it was wide (possibly scored by Paul) but that's all Thistle could manage. “Play got a trifle rough” (GEP).
Sat-09-Sep-1882 [a] (0-2) W4-2 Battlefield (Scottish Cup 1st Round)
– Battlefield scored on the half-hour mark. Thistle were more positive in response but it was the home team that scored after a scramble. In the second half Thistle improved and eventually took control. Young scored with a header (70) before 3 more were added through Beattie, Paterson and Paton.
