Sat-08-Sep-2018 [a] (1-0) L1-2 East Fife (Challenge Cup 2nd Round)
– Doolan's flick set Mutombo in on goal (22) to score with Thistle's only shot on target. An even poorer second half performance saw East Fife (bottom of Div 1) much the better team and a loose ball was hammered home (51) then a shot from 18 yards (74) made their day. Thistle booed off/East Fife cheered off.
Sat-08-Sep-2001 [h] (1-1) W2-1 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Ayr scored (11) but Dolan equalised (40) from the edge of the box with “one of the season's most spectacular strikes” (GH). Chances were missed but Britton stooped to head in a Fleming free-kick on the hour to make it 2-1. Ayr had a good chance near the end to make it a nervy finish. Thistle went top.
Sat-08-Sep-1990 [a] (0-0) W2-0 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 3)
– The teams sparred with one another for some time and Charnley emerged as the play-maker. Wright clipped the bar as Thistle pressed but it was 0-0 at half-time. Charnley scored with a pen for hand ball and soon after McGlashan hit the bar and Elliot was on hand to score. Thistle were in control till the end.
Sat-08-Sep-1984 [a] (1-0) D1-1 Meadowbank Thistle (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Meadowbank had at least 3 good chances before Thistle took the lead rather against the run of play when McDowall rammed home a rebounded Carson free-kick (18). Thistle faded and Meadowbank levelled with a simple header from a corner (52). A header over the bar from 6 yards should have meant defeat.
Wed-08-Sep-1982 [a] (0-1) L0-4 Celtic (League Cup Quarter Final, 1st leg)
– The realities of the gap between the Premier Division and the 1st were all too obvious as Thistle (with several regulars out injured) were outclassed. Celtic scored 10, 56 and 60 and hit the bar 3 times. Only Rough prevented a complete rout. The defence was ripped apart (85) to make it 4.
Sat-08-Sep-1979 [a] (0-0) D2-2 Dundee (SFL Premier Division - game 4)
– In torrential rain, the game deteriorated into a tough kicking match with numerous injuries (weakly handled by the ref) and lasted 97 mins. McAdam headed in a Houston corner (48) and again from a Park cross (87). In between, Rough fumbled a corner (62) and a header from a corner (75) put Dundee ahead. Fair result.
Sat-08-Sep-1973 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 2)
– “Young JAGs put on a show” (ET). Rangers (1 league defeat in a year) played badly but won. Future-JAG O'Hara set up Rangers' goal in the dying seconds. It was cruel luck on Thistle who contributed much and Rough, Glavin and Clark were among the best players on show but there was no goal threat.
Wed-08-Sep-1971 [a] (1-0) D1-1 Alloa Athletic (League Cup Supplementary Round, 2nd leg) agg: W5-2
– A goal by Coulston (8) after a defensive mix-up eased Thistle into the quarter finals. Alloa, facing a 5-1 aggregate, scored on the hour mark but it was of little consequence. By that time Thistle were content to allow Alloa to make the running but Rough and Campbell were in fine form and the result was never in doubt.
Sat-08-Sep-1962 [h] (3-0) W5-1 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Smith side-footed the opener (3) after Williamson had sprinted 30 yards and crossed. Ferguson (pen, 13) and Smith (unmarked from a McBride pass, 31) made it 3-0 at half-time. It was all Thistle and McBride (from a sitting position, 57) then McParland (62) made it 5. Clyde scored with a consolation penalty (73).
Sat-08-Sep-1956 [h] (0-1) L2-3 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Several promising moves and a goal by Thistle were all thwarted by off-side. Motherwell scored (15) and Thistle pressed with little effect. Poor defending led to Motherwell's 2nd (58) but Crowe made it 2-1 (tap-in from McParland's cross, 66). Motherwell went further ahead (82) then Davidson scored with a 30-yd free-kick (86).
Sat-08-Sep-1951 [a] (0-3) L1-4 Rangers (SFL Division A - game 1)
– In the end Thistle were no match for Rangers who scarcely exerted themselves. They were, however, flattered to be 3-up in 20 minutes. With numerous changes Thistle seldom knitted as a team and despite their neat build-up at times, Walker's scrambled goal at 4-0 late on was the only consolation then Rangers hit the post.
Wed-08-Sep-1948 [a] (1-1) L1-2 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– A poor game. Most excitement was in the last 10 minutes as Celtic held on desperately to the lead. They scored (28) with a free-kick deflected off McGowan but Sharp (Thistle's best forward) equalised (41) after a fine solo 25-yard run. Henderson failed to hold a vicious free-kick and a tap-in proved to be enough (60).
Sat-08-Sep-1945 [a] (0-0) W2-0 Clyde (Southern League, Division A - game 5)
– Curran and Brown were outstanding in this closely fought match. Sharp (57) and McInnes (85) got the goals that mattered. Clyde never gave up but they were unable to break down a solid defence. “Every JAG carried a sting” (SP). The well-deserved 2 points took Thistle up to 8th.
Tue-08-Sep-1936 [h] (2-0) W5-1 Queen's Park (SFL First Division - game 7)
– A header (4), a shot after the keeper punched out a McKennan shot (20) and a shot from close in (51) gave Smith his hat-trick. Wallace got the 4th when the keeper dropped the ball (54). Queens were outplayed but scored (65) before McMenemy got the 5th at a free-kick after McSpadyen had hit the post.
Sat-08-Sep-1934 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Thistle edged the first half but failed to use the wind to advantage although McLennan went close. Unbeaten Clyde came more into it near half-time and they had a better second half. Cummings was off for 10 minutes (cut) and Clyde piled on the pressure. Gourlay has a magnificent save and it was robust to the end.
Sat-08-Sep-1928 [h] (1-3) L3-4 Third Lanark (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Newly promoted Thirds took a 3-1 lead at half-time, Torbet scoring (17) for Thistle to make it 2-1. There was a hat-trick for their centre-forward Wilson. Thistle fought back however. Fraser wasted an easy chance but Ballantyne (50) and Ness (61) made it 3-3 and a draw looked likely but Thirds' Wilson got his 4th (89).
Sat-08-Sep-1923 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 5)
– “Shocking shooting“ (SP). Unchanged Thistle were a pale shadow of the previous week. They had the majority of the play but Motherwell scored with their 1st attack when Thomson let a shot squirm through his fingers. It was all Thistle but they couldn't finish. A miss-hit shot off a post made it 2-0 (60).
Wed-08-Sep-1920 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Raith Rovers (SFL - game 7)
– The match was played at a frantic pace and a “long raking drive” (DET) proved to be the winner (5). Thistle had Campbell to thank it was only 1-0 at half-time. They had a better second half but couldn't find the net thanks to stout defending by Rovers and on the run of play they deserved their first win of the season.
Sat-08-Sep-1917 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Dumbarton (SFL - game 4)
– Strong defending, bad luck and poor finishing combined in this goalless stalemate. Marshall brought out some excellent saves but Dumbarton made a few chances as well. The game was keenly contested but the final result was fair on balance. “Not a pretty game. Spoil, spoil, spoil was its chief note” (DR).
Sat-08-Sep-1906 [h] (0-2) L0-2 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Thistle started strongly with Kennedy and Campbell prominent but it was Celtic who scored first with a header from a corner (13). They doubled the lead 5 minutes before half-time. Thistle rallied and were in the ascendancy for a spell but Celtic finished the stronger. They “did not seem to trouble themselves” (DC).
Sat-08-Sep-1900 [h] (0-0) L1-2 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 4)
– “Thistle played a strong and energetic game“ (GH) and were unlucky not to take the lead. Rangers scored (50) but it was soon 1-1 thanks to ex-Ranger Hyslop (“his run and shot being something like his best days“.) The winner came (85) - a mistake by Wilkie - but both goalkeepers excelled in this match.
Wed-08-Sep-1897 [h] (0-1) L0-1 Celtic (Friendly)
– Both teams had “fringe“ players in the line-ups. A tame first half saw the only goal from a long shot. Thistle tried hard in the second half but could make no impression on a solid Celtic defence. Spence had a fine game in goal. 2 x 35 minutes were played.
Sat-08-Sep-1894 [a] (0-5) L2-6 Port Glasgow Athletic (SFL Second Division - game 3)
– Around 4,000 soon saw that Port were too strong for Thistle. They opened their account in 8 minutes and by half-time it was 5-0 and all over. Thistle only started to play after half-time and 2 goals from Paul put a better complexion on things - only for Port to score late on. Their shooting was “erratic“ (GT).
Sat-08-Sep-1888 [a] (0-3) L2-5 Abercorn (Friendly)
– “The first half-hour…was splendidly contested“ (GH). Things took a turn for the worse however and much weakened Thistle were soon 4-0 down. 2 quick goals (the first from Hislop) gave the score a bit more respectability but Abercorn (who had ex-JAG Duff in goal) scored again soon after.
Sat-08-Sep-1883 [h] (?-?) W11-0 Pilgrims (Friendly)
– “At the last moment the Pilgrims' arrangements fell through and with the aid of some strangers played a friendly game that resulted in a win for the Partick Thistle by eleven goals to none” (GH). This was originally scheduled as a SC tie but Pilgrims scratched. “The Thistle players began to get careless” (AN).
