Sat-07-Sep-2024 [h] (1-0) L1-3 Alloa Athletic (Challenge Cup 3rd Round)
– All-black Thistle seemed drained in the sunshine, and it was the part-timers in white who went from strength to strength the longer this game went on. A Milne cross was headed in by Graham (14) but rather than press home that advantage, Thistle were too pedestrian and lacked ideas. A cross and diving header (65 mins) equalised matters. Passive Thistle defending led to a strike for the lead (76) before an injury time penalty (stonewall concession by Milne, 90+5) completed the misery. A real confidence-basher.
Sat-07-Sep-2019 [a] (1-0) W2-0 Montrose (Challenge Cup 3rd Round)
– A comfortable enough win but on possession and chances, it should have been more convincing. Cardle scored at the back post (2) after fine build-up play then he set up the overlapping Williamson for Miller to head in his cross (53). Cole's free-kick from 20 yards hit the bar (64) but there were no more goals.
Sun-07-Sep-2008 [a] (0-0) W2-0 Livingston (Challenge Cup Quarter Final)
– Thistle had the better of the chances in the first half. Twaddle was busy down the left but no-one took advantage of his crosses. Hinchliffe had 2 good saves early in the second half then Chaplain was inches wide with a header. Sub Turner scored on his debut (75) then Twaddle nodded in (78) and Thistle were through.
Sat-07-Sep-1996 [a] (0-0) L0-2 St Johnstone (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Saints had several good chances and a goal chalked off. Ex-JAG Grant had an outrageous dive in the box. A good spell before half-time looked hopeful but a Slavin OG gave Saints a lift (75) then Thistle were denied a pen and had a Lyons shot cleared off the line. A goal rubbed the salt in (90). Down to the bottom.
Sat-07-Sep-1991 [a] (2-0) W3-1 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 6)
– McGlashan scored with a Shaw cross (2). Ayr hit the bar (23) then a Duffy pen after Shaw was pulled down doubled the lead (30). The second half was a catalogue of wasted chances by Ayr who dominated. Their long-ball aerial bombardment led to a deflected shot (52) but Shaw rounded the keeper (88).
Sat-07-Sep-1985 [a] (0-4) L0-5 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 5)
– The Thistle defence was posted missing (6) then Dalziel shot wide. A 15-yard drive (21), a pen (28) when Mackin handled and a shot from 18 yards (44) piled on the misery. A 5th after half-time finished it. It was a time for the players to “stand up and be counted“ (Rooney). A complete drubbing.
Sat-07-Sep-1974 [a] (1-2) L2-3 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Craig swept a McQuade cross in (6) as Rangers took some time to warm up. Thistle regretted not building on the lead when 2 goals (37 and 41) put them behind at half-time. Glavin hit the post but pressure told and a 3rd goal came (76). To their credit Thistle fought on and Coulston scored (80).
Sat-07-Sep-1968 [a] (0-0) L0-2 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Thistle were pinned back for most of the game. Rangers missed numerous chances, hit the post and had a shot cleared off the line. A goal from a scramble (78) and another (88) did the damage by which time Thistle's players seemed to have given up. Rangers announced Thornton would be their new Asst Mgr.
Sat-07-Sep-1963 [a] (1-1) L2-3 Third Lanark (SFL First Division - game 2)
– A harsh pen gave Thirds an early lead (6) then Duffy was robbed of a stonewall pen but Harvey scored with one soon after (28). Thistle pressed continuously until half-time but a speculative shot squirmed out of Niven's gloves (65) then Thirds got a 3rd (82) and Hainey headed a Hume cross in (88). Unlucky not to draw.
Sat-07-Sep-1957 [a] (1-0) W6-0 Queen's Park (SFL First Division - game 1)
– A one-sided win against Queens. Apart from a few early flurries, it was all Thistle. Goals from MacKenzie (an angled drive, 27 and a left-foot shot off a post, 63), McParland (header, 65), Mallon (a cool dribble and shot, 49 and 70) and Wright (85) won the points. Top of the league!
Tue-07-Sep-1954 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– A MacKenzie shot from 18 yards went in off both posts (26) but Celtic scored when Ledgerwood was charged and dropped the ball which was tapped into the empty goal (30). Smith scored running 30 yards (63) after Wright had hit the post. Celtic equalised (88) then a disallowed goal (90) had their fans in an uproar.
Sat-07-Sep-1946 [h] (0-2) L1-3 Clyde (SFL Division A - game 8)
– Clyde lost their keeper to injury after 15 minutes and Thistle's Wright was stretchered off after 35. Clyde took the lead (3) then a Curran OG (24) made it 2-0. O'Donnell reduced the lead with a solo run and shot (46) but Clyde battled on and scored their 3rd (47). A good game but all the plaudits went to the visitors.
Sat-07-Sep-1940 [h] (2-2) D3-3 Clyde (Southern League - game 5)
– “'Firhill for Thrills' could aptly be applied to this encounter“ (DR). A pulsating game with some man to man passing that was a delight to watch. The goalkeeping on view was also top-notch. Twice Clyde went in front but goals by Younger and Sharp made it 2-2 at half-time. Younger put Thistle ahead but Clyde levelled (81).
Sat-07-Sep-1935 [a] (0-3) L1-5 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 6)
– The scoreline suggests one-way traffic but Thistle had their share of attacking and enjoyed no luck at all in front of goal. Down 3-0 at half-time, a better second half saw Wyllie (G) pull one back to make it 4-1 (65) but Hamilton were the better team in all departments and won deservedly, their No 9 completing his hat-trick a minute later. Thistle slumped to 3rd bottom.
Sat-07-Sep-1929 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Unchanged for 5 consecutive games, Thistle made the better start but they found themselves behind to a header (20). Simpson got an equaliser 5 minutes before half-time and scored again (87). The game looked won but Hamilton scored (88). Two well-matched sides and a share of the spoils was fair.
Wed-07-Sep-1921 [a] (1-2) L2-3 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 6)
– A good Hamilton side deservedly went 2-up inside half an hour then hit the post with a pen. Thistle pulled one back through a Blair penalty but the 2-goal lead was restored in the second half as Hamilton pressed. Late on Thistle's forwards finally combined and McMenemy scored (85) but it was never that close.
Sat-07-Sep-1918 [a] (0-1) L0-3 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– “Clyde won…with ridiculous ease”. “Not for many a day have the Thistle shown worse form” (SC). Stewart brilliantly saved an early pen but Thistle never seemed to recover once Clyde scored. 2 more goals after the break killed them off. Clyde were the better team in every position except, perhaps, goal.
Sat-07-Sep-1912 [h] (0-0) W2-1 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Falkirk could have been 2-up in 5 minutes before Thistle got going. Marshall went off injured before half-time when “his leg gave way” (SC). There were chances at both ends before Branscombe scored while the keeper was lying injured then King made it 2-0 (“a grand goal”). Falkirk scored with a late free-kick.
Sat-07-Sep-1907 [a] (1-2) D2-2 St Mirren (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Thistle opened with a good spell of pressure but soon unbeaten St Mirren had the better of things and went 2-up. McGregor reduced the lead just on half-time. The Thistle defence had to be at their best in the second half then McGregor scored again. Both teams went all out for a winner but had to settle for a point.
Sat-07-Sep-1901 [h] (4-0) W5-1 St Bernard's (SFL Second Division - game 4)
– Thistle settled first and Lamont opened the scoring then Muirhead and Conner quickly added two more. The visitors went down to 10 men and Muirhead got his 2nd for 4-0 at half-time. Back to 11 men, Saints were better in the second half despite another injury and scored but Conner (perhaps Cousar) made it 5-1.
Sat-07-Sep-1895 [h] (1-2) D2-2 Kilmarnock (SFL Second Division - game 3)
– There was a brisk start by both teams but Thistle had the edge. Wilkie scored “a beauty” (SR) then Kilmarnock levelled with a daisy-cutter. They went ahead from a corner (35) and went inches from adding to their lead after half-time but Proudfoot scored (77) “amidst deafening cheers”.
Sat-07-Sep-1889 [a] (1-2) L2-3 3rd L.R.V. (Scottish Cup 1st Round)
– The cup holders took the lead (3) but McDonald levelled (13). It was 2-1 at half-time. Thistle enjoyed no luck at all before it went to 3-1. Proudfoot was injured (76) but Thirds played on. Enraged, the crowd invaded the pitch. The police cleared it and play resumed after 18 minutes and Johnstone made it 3-2.
Sat-07-Sep-1878 [h] (?-?) D1-1 Violet (Friendly)
– Another close encounter with our fellow Partickonians. “A very fast game“ (NBDM)
