Sun-06-Sep-2009 [h] (0-1) L*1-1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle (Challenge Cup Quarter Final) aet; * L3-4 pens
– AET. Lost 3-4 on pens. A shot from the edge of the box gave Caley the lead (5). Thistle were 2nd best and survived a few close things but a better second half saw them press and Buchanan snapped up a poor clearance (77). It was end to end stuff after that as chances were made and missed and it went to pens.
Sat-06-Sep-1986 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Play was even early on then luck deserted Thistle when McIntyre sliced a clearance in for an OG to give Airdrie the lead (17). Gallagher headed straight at the keeper soon afterwards. Thistle had lots of pressure but lacked punch up front and it ended in defeat. Airdrie stayed top, Thistle fell to 2nd bottom.
Sat-06-Sep-1980 [a] (1-2) L1-4 Celtic (SFL Premier Division - game 4)
– The Thistle rear-guard was pounded and finally cracked (23) with the defence flat-footed. A soft pen (25) made it 2-0 but a blistering drive by Gibson from an O'Hara pass reduced the lead (34). A good spell after half-time came to nothing before new Celtic wonder kid, Nicholas, scored twice (69 and 80) for an easy win.
Sat-06-Sep-1975 [h] (1-0) W1-0 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 2)
– A run into the heart of the Clyde defence and a 25-yard shot by Rooney (17) won the points. Rooney and Campbell were both lost to injury but even so, unbeaten Thistle had so much possession over winless Clyde (looking like relegation candidates) that it should have been much more convincing.
Mon-06-Sep-1971 [h] (3-1) W4-1 Alloa Athletic (League Cup Supplementary Round, 1st leg)
– It was an exciting game. Alloa produced a high standard of football and made a fight of it after the disappointments of the first twenty minutes. Pace down the wings was the foundation of the win and Thistle took the lead (8) when Coulston scored with a flying header from a McQuade cross. An almost identical goal at the other end (an own goal by Reid) put Alloa on level terms three minutes later. A slick move involving a number of players ended with a McQuade goal to give Thistle the lead. A few minutes later Rae (A) touched a free-kick to Smith who got Thistle's third with a shot from 35 yards (20). Alloa fought back and came close twice. Rough had to be at his best on both occasions. His opposite number was also in fine form and he had a couple of excellent saves to deny Bone and Lawrie before saving a Bone penalty. Bone did however get on the score sheet when he finished off a good move and pass from McQuade (78).
Sat-06-Sep-1969 [a] (1-2) L1-5 Hibernian (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Trailing to a pen (25) Duncan equalised (37) finishing off a good move. Exchanges were even until Hibs scored through ex-JAG McBride (43). They were the better team after the break and it was one-way traffic. McBride got his hat-trick (69 and 79) before future manager Cormack got his 2nd (86).
Sat-06-Sep-1958 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Thistle were almost back to their strongest selection and it was a cracking match. Fast and exciting with lots of good play. Ledgerwood kept Clyde's eager forwards at bay with some fine saves. A McParland corner was belted across goal by the magnificent MacKenzie off Wright (50). A fine save denied McParland late on.
Sat-06-Sep-1952 [h] (1-1) D1-1 Aberdeen (SFL Division A - game 1)
– “A lively but scrappy game” (GH). McGowan (who was in magnificent form) injured his arm and Aberdeen scored while he was off for attention (8). Stott equalised (40) when the Aberdeen defence failed to cut out a cross. The second half saw chances at both ends, fast wing play and fine goalkeeping but it ended 1-1.
Wed-06-Sep-1950 [h] (2-1) W4-1 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final replay)
– Thistle were good value for the win. In driving rain and wind, they adapted better to the conditions. Davidson scored (2) but Thirds had their best spell and deservedly equalised (23). O'Donnell gave Thistle the lead (32) and McCredie scored with 2 pens (51 and 61) before Ledgerwood save a penalty (80).
Sat-06-Sep-1947 [a] (1-1) L3-4 Queen's Park (League Cup Division A, Section B - game 5)
– Queens missed a first half pen but scored (19). Sharp scored (38 and 58). Queens scored (82 and 83), hit the bar (84), Mathie equalised (88), Ledgerwood was barged and dropped the ball and Curran handled the resulting shot conceding a pen (90). Thistle had 3 goals disallowed, Queens 1. Another late cave-in.
Sat-06-Sep-1941 [a] (1-2) L2-4 Clyde (Southern League - game 5)
– An excellent game with some fine football but Clyde always had more sustained spells of pressure. Newall gave Thistle an early lead (5) but 2 quick goals on the half hour put them behind. He equalised (72) but another quick double (84 and 85) put the points safe for a good Clyde team.
Mon-06-Sep-1937 [a] (2-0) W5-1 Queen's Park (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final replay)
– After a shaky start Thistle took command but not before Queens had hit the post. 2 goals from McKennan (23 and 44) then one from Smith (57) gave Thistle a 3-goal lead but Queens scored soon after. They missed a penalty (75) before McSpadyen (83) and Watson (89) completed the scoring.
Sat-06-Sep-1930 [h] (6-0) W8-0 East Fife (SFL First Division - game 5)
– “An example of the inequalities that exist in Div 1 football“ (GH). Newly promoted East Fife were totally out of their depth and Thistle led 6-0 at half-time, Torbet having started the fun in 30 seconds. Simpson made it 5-0 just on the half hour. Thistle eased off in the second half but 2 more goals completed the rout. Simpson (3), Torbet (2), Boardman, Turner and Rae scored.
Sat-06-Sep-1924 [h] (1-0) W3-0 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 5)
– After a promising start by Accies they faded and Thistle took the lead (15) when Grove scored from a Ness cross. Collins doubled the lead thanks to an error by the right-back (65) then McMullan scored with a 20-yard free-kick 5 minutes later. Paton and Gibson were outstanding.
Wed-06-Sep-1922 [n] (?-?) L1-2 Celtic (Cambuslang Unemployed Fundraiser)
– This midweek fundraiser was played at the home of Cambuslang Rangers, for the benefit of the local unemployed and was very well supported by the local community who were entertained by some big names, not least of which was the 41-year-old Jimmy McMenemy, a hero to both clubs, making his last appearance for Thistle. The only sour note was Celtic's left-back - Jimmy McStay - fracturing his nose.
Sat-06-Sep-1919 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– A hard, even game. Harris (N) shouldered off 2 defenders and scored (15) but Clyde equalised (40) - Thistle trying to play off-side once too often. After half-time a pen claim was rejected but McMullan scored with a magnificent 30-yarder only for Clyde to equalise (88). A fair result. Both keepers were in fine form.
Sat-06-Sep-1913 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Competitively fought but scrappy. Both defences were far too good for the forwards - there wasn't a decent one on view - whereas every defender was in fine form. Airdrie were awarded a penalty but it was shot straight at Campbell. Branscombe went close late on but, in truth, neither team deserved to win.
Wed-06-Sep-1911 [a] (0-0) L0-2 Clyde (Alec Watson Benefit)
– Testimonial for Clyde player Watson. Play was even for a while then a strong Clyde side put Thistle (mostly reserves) under pressure. The second half was mostly Clyde and a fine goal just after the restart made it 1-0. After more close shaves by Clyde it was 2-0. The game finished in semi-darkness.
Sat-06-Sep-1902 [h] (0-0) L0-2 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 4)
– It was all Dundee and Wilkie kept it scoreless at half-time. Dundee scored from a stramash (70) and Wilkie was injured in the action. Duncanson took over in goal. It was an uphill struggle for the 10 men after that and top of the league Dundee scored again to make it 4 wins out of 4, leaving Thistle in 8th place.
Sat-06-Sep-1890 [a] (0-1) L2-3 Wishaw Thistle (Scottish Cup 1st Round)
– One of the biggest crowds ever seen at Old Public Park saw Wishaw 1-up at half-time. McLeod equalised just after half-time then Clark put under strength Thistle ahead. Wishaw equalised almost immediately and a draw looked likely until “Wishaw scored just before the end amid great excitement” (GH).
Sat-06-Sep-1884 [a] (1-3) L1-4 St Mirren (Friendly)
– Thistle had the best of the early play but St Mirren went ahead on the counter. A fine run set up Miller to level but St Mirren took a 2-goal lead just on half-time. Fine play by both teams after half-time made for an exciting match but a 4th goal just on full-time from Duff's parried save gave the Saints a comfortable win.
Sat-06-Sep-1879 [h] (?-?) W7-0 Ardayre (Friendly)
– The opening game (as far as is known) of Thistle's fifth season, and the club-record 7 goal winning margin (set in October 1878 vs. Parkholm) is matched.
