matches (5th September)

Sat-05-Sep-1998 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Alloa Athletic (SFL Second Division - game 5)
– A good start by Alloa and Thistle took ages to pose any sort of threat. Morgan missed an open goal right on half-time but he scored when he diverted a Connell shot past the keeper(68). Alloa only showed in the last nervy 10 minutes and were denied an equaliser by a fine save from Arthur (80). A poor game.
Sat-05-Sep-1992 [a] (1-0) W1-0 Falkirk (SFL Premier Division - game 7)
– Thistle soaked up Falkirk's pressure and sprung their off-side trap a number of times with Shaw and Britton prominent. Ironically one of the few times the Falkirk defence got the off-side trap right, the ref waved play on and Britton scooped in a loose, deflected ball (14). Nelson (his best display for the club) won the points.
Tue-05-Sep-1989 [h] (1-0) W3-1 Raith Rovers (SFL First Division - game 5)
– “Calum in fast lane” (DR). Wright headed Thistle into the lead (30) and Campbell scored after 11 secs of the second half. Rovers reduced the lead with a rebound off the bar (58) and panic set in. Murdoch saved a pen (83) but when Flood was sent crashing, Charnley scored with the one (85). A point almost thrown away.
Sat-05-Sep-1987 [h] (1-1) D3-3 East Fife (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Logan scored from 15 yards to give Thistle the lead (15) but keeper Carson and a defender collided and the ball was tucked away (27). The Fifers hit the bar then Gallagher missed a sitter. They scored again (46) but an OG made it 2-2 (60). Gallagher's terrific 20 yarder made it 3-2 (66) but future-JAG Pitman scored (89).
Sat-05-Sep-1981 [a] (1-2) L2-4 Dundee (SFL Premier Division - game 2)
– Dundee (looking for their 1st win of the season in this early relegation battle) went behind to a Gibson header (11) but MacKinnon scored an OG (14). Worse followed when Dundee took a 2-1 lead (29). Watson equalised early in the second half but Dundee strolled it with 2 further goals. “Dismal Thistle” (ET).
Sat-05-Sep-1970 [a] (1-0) D2-2 Stirling Albion (SFL Second Division - game 2)
– Thistle took the lead (10) when Coulston banged in a Gibson cross. Albion fought back and had a good spell before their keeper had a magnificent save from McQuade. They levelled (56) but Coulston got his 2nd (72) when the keeper dropped the ball but Albion scored to make it all square (82). Fair result on the day.
Sat-05-Sep-1964 [h] (0-2) L0-3 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Cowan hit the post, a Fleming shot was cleared off the line then Clyde scored with their 1st attack (4). Slow hand-clapping broke out as Thistle floundered. Clyde scored again (32). A re-jigged forward line in the second half made no difference and a back-header from a corner (75) rubbed it in. Poor fare in the rain.
Mon-05-Sep-1960 [h] (2-2) W3-2 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– Thistle deserved their win over finicky Clyde but their rough tactics late on won few friends. In 30 secs Hogan rode 2 tackles and crossed for Smith to score but Clyde equalised (13). Hogan's left foot hook shot (30) made it 2-1 then a 30- yard drive made it 2-2. Smith (injured for most of the match) scored (65).
Sat-05-Sep-1959 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Thistle went 1-down to a well-worked goal (2). Keenan almost equalised when be brought out a good save from the Clyde goalkeeper but all too often good midfield play by both teams died at the 18-yard line. Thomson had a shot kicked off the line and Freebairn's brilliant save denied Clyde a 2nd goal.
Sat-05-Sep-1953 [a] (0-3) L0-3 Rangers (SFL Division A - game 1)
– “Almost an hour's boredom” (GH). Thistle went 3-down in 22 minutes and the game was effectively over. Wright and Howitt with shots well saved by future-JAG Niven escaped criticism but other Thistle players too easily lost heart. Ledgerwood looked suspect at 2 of the goals and a shock was never likely.
Sat-05-Sep-1942 [h] (2-1) W3-1 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– McKennan (in a rare appearance on leave) gave Thistle the lead (5) but Clyde settled and levelled (33). McSpadyen (44) and McKennan (85) won the tie and McKennan's strong dribbling was a feature. Clyde had 11 corners to Thistle's 3 but their forwards couldn't capitalise and they conceded two goals from defensive bunders.
Sat-05-Sep-1936 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Aberdeen (SFL First Division - game 6)
– Top of the league and unbeaten, Aberdeen got their goals either side of half-time (35 and 50). The Thistle defence was shaky, McMenemy on his debut took a heavy knock (10) and McKennan was off injured for a spell. Wallace deserved better when his lob was cleared off the line but that was as close as Thistle got.
Wed-05-Sep-1934 [a] (2-0) W4-0 Buckie Thistle (Friendly)
– An entertaining game. Thistle took time to settle against robust opposition but McLennan headed in a Neish cross (25) then Buckie had a chance kicked off the line with Gourlay beaten. Miller converted a pen (37). Buckie missed 2 good chances then Neish and Wyllie scored in the second half.
Sat-05-Sep-1931 [a] (1-0) L1-2 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 8)
– A Clyde defender hit his own post before Torbet set up Wyllie for the opener (16) which signalled the rough play to begin. 2 goals in the second half put Clyde ahead and despite some frantic efforts Thistle couldn't score. It was “kick and rush“ stuff with numerous fouls and injuries. Football in the raw.
Sat-05-Sep-1925 [h] (1-0) D1-1 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Grove scored (5) and Celtic pressed for the equaliser but Thistle were the better team. O'Hare missed the second half and Donald, Hair and Kinloch played as cripples. The depleted team performed heroically in defence but Celtic equalised (87). A fine performance. Optimism for the replay anyone?
Sat-05-Sep-1914 [h] (1-0) W4-1 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 4)
– “The game was not a brilliant one” (SC). Whittle gave Thistle the lead (on his debut) but Motherwell equalised early in the second half. Branscombe and Whittle again extended the lead and when Bulloch scored with a penalty “all interest died out, the Thistle winning easily” (SC).
Sat-05-Sep-1908 [h] (1-1) D1-1 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Ibrox. 2nd top= Dundee scored 1st from a free kick but Thistle equalised just on half-time through Kennedy with “a grand shot” (SC). They were the better team after the break in a keenly fought match. The defence was sound but the forwards were less effective. Thistle “did everything but play football” (DC).
Sat-05-Sep-1903 [h] (1-1) D1-1 Heart of Midlothian (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Thistle scored first through a Massie free-kick then Hearts were awarded a dubious penalty against Campbell which was converted before half-time. In the second half Thistle's “dash and vim astonished the Hearts” (GH) but both sides had spells of good play and it was a fair result. “Thistle are a bustling lot” (EEN).
Sat-05-Sep-1896 [h] (1-0) W2-1 Renton (SFL Second Division - game 3)
– A narrow win against a poor Renton side, too fond of kick and rush football. Paul and Proudfoot missed easy chances before trialist McKenzie gave them a half-time lead. A scrimmage in front of goal saw Paul make it 2-0 but Renton scored soon after, the defence in disarray with Smith well off his line.
Sat-05-Sep-1891 [a] (0-0) W2-1 Glasgow Wanderers (Scottish Cup 1st Preliminary Round)
– In “boisterous weather” (SR) Thistle were well in control but had failed to score by half-time. Paul gave them the lead with a high shot (55). Keay increased the lead but Wanderers fought on and Proudfoot was a stalwart in defence but they could only manage one goal before the finish.
Sat-05-Sep-1885 [a] (0-1) D1-1 St Bernard's (Friendly)
– In fine weather and on an excellent surface two well-matched teams found it hard going against the respective defences. St Bernard's took the lead just on half-time. In the second half the home keeper was in excellent form but Miller scored to earn Thistle a deserved draw in their first ever match against the Edinburgh team.
