Sat-03-Sep-2022 [a] (0-0) W2-0 Arbroath (SPFL Championship - game 6)
– Early chances soon became scarce as the game settled into a stalemate. Thistle were well on top but couldn't find a killer punch. Arbroath went down to 10 men (2nd yellow, 50) and Thistle gained impetus. Docherty hit the post but Dowds slotted home the rebound from 6 yards (86) then McKinnon evaded several tackles to find the far corner (90).
Tue-03-Sep-1996 [h] (1-0) W1-0 Airdrieonians (League Cup 3rd Round)
– A 2nd yellow then a red for abuse of officials (29) reduced Airdrie to 10 men. An Evans goal (long ball, lucky break off defender, slotted home, 34) was enough but Airdrie wasted the best chances. Thistle were under severe pressure most of the second half and the post saved them (89). There were 5 other bookings.
Sat-03-Sep-1988 [h] (1-3) L1-4 Morton (SFL First Division - game 4)
– “Painful Jags” (ET). It was all Morton and they took a 2-goal lead (15 and 20, both headers). After a 5-min delay for crowd trouble, Kelly hit the post but Morton's third header made it 3-0 (35). McCoy pulled one back from a free-kick (41) but a low shot beat MacLean (72). Morton went top, Thistle went 2nd bottom.
Sat-03-Sep-1983 [h] (1-0) W2-0 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 2)
– A tough game with vicious tackling. 4 bookings (of 6) and a red card were in a 4-minute spell after half-time. A cross by McDonald led to an OG by Kilmarnock (33). They had the better of the chances but none were taken. Reduced to 10 men (55) they faded and Johnstone scrambled home a cross to put the points safe (81).
Wed-03-Sep-1980 [h] (1-0) W2-0 St Mirren (League Cup 3rd Round, 1st leg)
– Much improved Thistle were in control from the start and Park (playing as an orthodox winger) was excellent and caused disappointingly poor St Mirren problems all night. Gibson pounced on an O'Hara shot that was blocked (15) and he scored again (60) from 6 yards shooting home an O'Hara header.
Sat-03-Sep-1977 [a] (0-0) L0-1 Dundee United (League Cup 2nd Round, 2nd leg) agg: L0-1
– AGG: 0-1. Thistle's defensive style won few friends and it cost them dear in the end. They sat in as wave after wave of attacks rained in on Thomson. He was not seriously threatened until United scored (54) when a cross was kneed in for the only goal.
Wed-03-Sep-1969 [a] (1-3) L2-5 St Johnstone (SFL First Division - game 2)
– A comfortable win for Saints who were 2-up in 27 mins. Duncan reduced the lead with a prod from a scramble (29) but soon it was 3-1. Duncan scored again (header, 64) but 2 quick goals in reply wrapped it up. Thistle fought on and Flanagan's late pen was saved, the rebound hit the bar and was headed clear.
Sat-03-Sep-1966 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Motherwell (League Cup Section 3 - game 6)
– “Squandered chances and aimless passes“ (GH). Niven (by far the busier keeper) had some fine saves and Muir cleared off the line. Thistle began to mount some pressure after half-time and made more of their possession. Roxburgh was unlucky to hit the bar (87) but inexplicably shot past an open goal (90).
Sat-03-Sep-1960 [h] (0-3) L0-4 Third Lanark (League Cup Section 2 - game 6)
– Thirds took the lead (shot under Freebairn's body, 6), hit the post and scored again (8). Ex-JAG McInnes showed how one-sided it was (10) then Hogan cleared off the line. Thistle's forwards (with 3 fringe players) seldom threatened and poor defending led to the 4th goal (57) at which point the game died. “Shocking display“ (DR).
Sat-03-Sep-1955 [a] (0-0) W1-0 Raith Rovers (League Cup Section 2 - game 6)
– Rovers were the better team in a goalless first half. Ledgerwood was often in action whereas a McParland free-kick was Thistle's only effort. The second half was much the same except MacKenzie scored the only goal (61) when he got into a tangle with 2 defenders and his shot trickled over the line.
Sat-03-Sep-1949 [h] (4-2) W4-2 Dundee (League Cup Division A, Section C - game 6)
– Dundee played neat, tippy-tappy stuff but Thistle were not impressed. Kinnell equalised an early goal (18) then Gibb shot home from 30 yards (20). Poor defending let Dundee in (35) but Howitt with a half-hit shot (41) and McCredie (43) ensured Thistle won the section. The second half was a non-event.
Sat-03-Sep-1938 [a] (0-2) L1-3 Albion Rovers (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Newly promoted Rovers fully deserved their 2-goal lead at half-time. Johnstone's parry was tapped in (30) and Sutherland's poor clearance led to the 2nd (35). McCrindle reduced the lead from long distance (51) but a header from a neat lob made it 3 (75). The match finished with Thistle adopting an off-side trap to stem the tide.
Mon-03-Sep-1934 [n] (0-0) W3-1 North of Scotland Select (Friendly)
– Thistle started with “a superior air“ (DR) but soon found goals hard to come by. Elliot hit the post with pen but Wyllie headed in a Ballantyne cross just after half-time. A poor pass-back by Calderwood let the Select team in to equalise (75). Thistle survived some frantic pressure then Ballantyne and Wyllie scored late on.
Sat-03-Sep-1932 [a] (0-2) L0-3 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 5)
– “There was no evidence that Thistle possessed any plan or scheme” (GH). Kilmarnock scored 6, 16 and 70. The Thistle team was peppered with players who would make only occasional appearances this season and seldom threatened. Defeat left them 2nd bottom. A poor game nonetheless.
Wed-03-Sep-1930 [a] (1-1) D2-2 Clyde (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– A typical cup-tie, full of “dour determination and physical force“ (GH). Boardman gave Thistle the lead (16) but Clyde equalised with the last kick of the first half. Turner headed in a Torbet cross (57, suspiciously off-side) but Clyde headed in a leveller from a free-kick 6 minutes later to earn a deserved replay. Both teams hit the post late on.
Sat-03-Sep-1927 [a] (1-2) L2-4 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 4)
– 1st league defeat for Thistle, 1st goals and win for Dundee. Hair gave Thistle an early lead but Dundee led 2-1 after just 12 minutes and 4-1 after 55. Hair scored (58) but even allowing for an improvement when Lambie went back to centre-half from left-back, Thistle were always second best.
Sat-03-Sep-1921 [h] (3-1) W4-2 Dumbarton (SFL First Division - game 5)
– An excellent game. After Johnstone had hit the post, Dumbarton opened the scoring (26) but goals in rapid succession by Blair, Johnstone and Kinloch put Thistle in control. Dumbarton deservedly scored (50) and it was a close run thing until Blair made sure (89). A flattering scoreline however.
Sat-03-Sep-1910 [a] (0-2) L0-3 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Falkirk scored with a pen (hand ball by McKenzie) and soon after a “random shot” (SC) made it 2-0. Thistle improved after the break and Falkirk rode their luck at times. King and Callaghan were prominent but the Falkirk keeper was in good form. A 3rd goal towards the end was, however, flattering.
Sat-03-Sep-1904 [a] (1-5) L1-8 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A day to forget. Massie did manage a fine individual effort on the break to make it 3-1 but Rangers scored with regular monotony and led 5-1 at half-time. “Nor does the score adequately interpret their (Rangers') superiority” (GH). “Rangers on the rampage” (AN). Bottom of the table with 1 point.
Sat-03-Sep-1898 [h] (0-3) L1-4 Hibernian (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Still no joy against Hibs who booked the wind and were 1-up in 3 mins. Thistle were seldom seen in attack and it was 3-0 at half-time. Hibs hit the post then scored again. Lindsay did manage a goal (a lovely curling shot) but the better team deserved the win. The defence was weak and the forwards ineffectual.
Sat-03-Sep-1892 [h] (1-0) D3-3 Royal Albert (Friendly)
– It was even early on. Royal Albert played some decent stuff but it was Murray who scored (15) with “a beauty” (GH). In the second half Murray and Gilchrist scored but Royal Albert hit back with 3 to earn the draw.
Sat-03-Sep-1887 [h] (5-0) W10-0 Westbourne (Scottish Cup 1st Round)
– The result was never in doubt once Suter scored (5). Along with Marshall and Buchanan he scored a hat-trick. Robertson got the other goal. The 9th goal by Buchanan saw him run virtually the length of the park before scoring. Plucky Westbourne were outclassed.
Sat-03-Sep-1881 [a] (?-?) W2-1 Jamestown (Friendly)
– “At Jamestown on Saturday and ended in favour of the strangers by two to one“ (SC).
