Sat-02-Sep-2023 [a] (1-1) W4-1 Greenock Morton (SPFL Championship - game 4)
– Morton bossed the early stages and scored from a low free-kick (15). Once Thistle got going Lawless turned his man, ran on and scored for 1-1 (39). Graham got in front of his marker (70) and shot home (72) both from 6 yards. Milne was sent off (2nd yellow) but Adeloye latched on to a long clearance down the right, cut in and scored (84).
Sat-02-Sep-1989 [a] (1-0) W3-0 Forfar Athletic (SFL First Division - game 4)
– After a bright start by Forfar, Charnley scored with a pen (12) when Campbell was brought down. Soon after he went close with a curling free-kick then Forfar had a few good chances. Charnley's brilliant 30-yard free-kick flew past the keeper (55) and when Smith was tripped in the box he completed his hat-trick.
Sat-02-Sep-1978 [a] (1-1) L*2-2 Falkirk (League Cup 2nd Round, 2nd leg) aet; agg: 3-3; L3-5 pens
– AGG: 3-3. AET. Lost 3-5 on pens. Falkirk went ahead (16) and against the run of play Gibson levelled from 20 yards (41). An unbelievable save by Rough kept things level but an OG by Sheed (108) and a 20-yarder from Craig (118) took the tie to penalties. Falkirk wanted the win more and deserved it. “Slick Falkirk made Thistle look ordinary” (FH).
Sat-02-Sep-1972 [h] (2-0) W4-1 Dumbarton (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Dumbarton's 1st game in the top division for 50 years was a largely a formality. Coulston hooked in a corner (4). It was all Thistle and Forsyth rattled the bar then Lawrie rammed home a loose ball (27). A pen (foul by Rough, 64) made it 2-1 but 2 quick goals from Glavin (69 and 71) made sure of the points.
Wed-02-Sep-1970 [a] (2-0) D2-2 Stranraer (League Cup Supplementary Round, 2nd leg) agg: W4-3
– AGG: 4-3. Stranraer held Thistle comfortably for half an hour then headers by Rae and Coulston (both from corners, 18 and 44) made it 2-0. A pen (foul by Ralston on his debut) just after half-time perked up Stranraer and the best goal of the game made it 2-2 on the night just before the end but they left it too late.
Sat-02-Sep-1967 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Kilmarnock (League Cup Section 1 - game 6)
– With McKinnon recovered from pre-season injury, a much improved performance against the section winners. Goalmouth action from the 1st minute and spectacular saves at both ends ensured the result was in doubt right to the end. Rae scored (78) with a shot off a post. Good game for the meagre crowd.
Sat-02-Sep-1961 [a] (2-0) L3-4 St Johnstone (League Cup Section 1 - game 6)
– Slow hansclaps ringing in their ears, feckless St Johnstone looked well beaten thanks to goals by McBride (18) and Ewing (32). Transformation came with a goal (64) and a 50-yard free-kick over Freebairn (68). Even then Williamson lobbed the advancing keeper for 3-2 but goals from an acute angle (75) and a lob (81) saw Thistle throw it away.
Wed-02-Sep-1953 [h] (0-1) L1-2 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– Four days later, a poor performance. 2 goals by Second Division Third Lanark (27 and 57, both from free-kicks conceded by the robust Thomson) set them on their way and Thistle were lucky it wasn't more. It was only in the last 20 minutes that they were seen to effect but a goal by Wright (74) was too little too late.
Sat-02-Sep-1950 [h] (1-1) L2-3 Motherwell (League Cup Division A, Section C - game 6)
– Motherwell took the lead (15) but O'Donnell lobbed home an equaliser (35). Thistle fell behind (75), levelled through O'Donnell (77) and lost it (80). Unlucky, they hit the post several times and a storming finish just failed. Walker declined a tap-in thinking he was off-side only to find the ref had waved play on!
Sat-02-Sep-1944 [a] (3-0) W3-0 Albion Rovers (Southern League - game 3)
– A misleading scoreline. Thistle struggled in this match and Husband had an excellent game in defence. It was an complete surprise when Sharp (41), Gourlay (43) and Millar (44) scored. Before and after this purple patch Thistle never looked like doing anything. Rovers were hard done to. They missed a pen in the second half.
Sat-02-Sep-1933 [h] (0-2) L0-3 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 5)
– Thistle were no match for a fine Falkirk side who took the lead (17). McLean hit the bar then Johnstone was a fault (35) thinking a shot was going wide. Thistle stormed back however and McLean hit the bar again but an OG by Prior (67) killed them off. A brilliant save denied McLeod (A) late on.
Wed-02-Sep-1931 [h] (1-1) W5-1 Cowdenbeath (SFL First Division - game 7)
– Thistle were disjointed, Cowdenbeath played very well. Ness headed in (5) but a fine 25-yard shot levelled and Thistle were firmly on the back foot until half-time. At length, Ness, Elliott and Wyllie (60, 64 and 69) scored, aided by defensive errors. A Torbet pen (81) made it 5-1 but the score was harsh on the Fifers.
Tue-02-Sep-1924 [n] (1-2) L1-6 Rangers (Opening of Helenvale Stadium)
– To open Helenvale sports ground. The Duke of York kicked off and Rangers did everything but score early on. Collins gave unchanged Thistle the lead (25) but 2 goals before and 4 after half-time emphasised Rangers' superiority. Probably just as well the second half was restricted to 30 minutes.
Sat-02-Sep-1922 [a] (0-0) L1-3 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Rangers could have had this tie won by half-time but Thistle's completely changed half-back line (and some brilliant saves by Wilkinson) kept it goalless at half-time. McColl kicked the ball out of the keeper's hands (47) after he had fumbled a save but 2 quick goals (47 and 57) turned the tie around and a 3rd killed it off.
Sat-02-Sep-1916 [a] (1-2) L2-3 Morton (SFL - game 3)
– Morton lost a player through injury (30) and another was a passenger, but by then they were 2-up (a cute back-heeler and a pen). Morton adopted a frustrating off-side policy but Harris (N) reduced the leeway then he equalised in the second half. Morton's winner came from another pen late on. Bulloch conceded both of them.
Sat-02-Sep-1911 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 4)
– If anything, Falkirk just shaded the first half but both sets of forwards made little impression. In fact, Thistle had no goal threat and failed to take advantage of the fact that Falkirk played more than half the match without a full-back. McGregor hit the post with a penalty and King had a goal disallowed late on.
Sat-02-Sep-1905 [h] (2-0) W2-0 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Newcomers to the league Falkirk had their chances in the first half but their forwards didn't take them. Sommen gave Thistle a fortunate lead when the keeper spilled an effort by Gray (30) then Kennedy made it 2-0 (45). It was mainly Thistle in a scrappy second half. The visitors' defence stood firm.
Sat-02-Sep-1899 [h] (2-0) W3-1 Port Glasgow Athletic (SFL Second Division - game 3)
– Collier headed in a free-kick (10) then Goudie made it 2-0 at half-time. Paul “scored“ but was wrongly adjudged off-side before Freebairn (back at the club after a spell in England) scored “with the best shot of the day“ (GH). Port scored late on. Their keeper saved 3 Freebairn pens. Thistle went top and stayed there.
Sat-02-Sep-1893 [h] (3-1) D3-3 Airdrieonians (Scottish Cup 1st Preliminary Round)
– Freebairn scored 3 before half-time but it wasn't enough for a win. It was 3-1 at half-time and in the second half Airdrie had the better of things and scored twice. Thistle tried hard for a winner but to no avail. Murray was lost to injury for most of the second half and Robertson miskicked with the goal at his mercy late on.
Sat-02-Sep-1882 [a] (?-?) D1-1 Renfrew FC (Friendly)
– Featuring a scratch Thistle side, the game was played 10 men a-side. “Beattie at half-back for Thistle played a brilliant game” (NBDM).
