Sat-28-Aug-2021 [h] (1-0) W3-0 Greenock Morton (SPFL Championship - game 4)
– A looping header by Holt at a corner gave Thistle the opener (9). Morton rallied but made little impression and it could have been more than 1-0 at half-time. Rudden volleyed home, set up by Tiffoney (47) and Graham's header from a corner (55) made it 3. It should have been more emphatic. Second best Morton seldom looked like scoring.
Tue-28-Aug-2012 [a] (0-0) L0-1 Hamilton Academical (League Cup 2nd Round) aet
– AET. Thistle had a good first half and only the Hamilton goalkeeper kept things level. Hamilton improved in the second half but there were no goals. An excellent 25 yard lob over Fox in extra time insured there would be no club record 7th win. A good match with Thistle a little unfortunate on the night.
Sat-28-Aug-2010 [a] (1-1) L1-2 Cowdenbeath (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Doolan gave Thistle the lead (16) but a simple long throw a minute later and it was 1-1. A fine save by Halliwell prevented a 2nd goal (52) but poor marking at a corner led to the winning goal soon after. Thistle hit the post but it ended 2-1. Thistle players got a roasting when they went off.
Tue-28-Aug-2007 [h] (0-0) W*0-0 St Johnstone (League Cup 2nd Round) aet; * W5-4 pens
– AET. Won 5-4 on pens. Strangely, an entertaining 0-0 draw. Thistle dominated for more than an hour playing neat, passing football but 20 attempts on goal came to nothing. (Saints had 15.) Man of the match Murray hit the post on the hour. Extra time was also goalless so it was on to penalties.
Sat-28-Aug-2004 [a] (0-0) W1-0 Ross County (SFL First Division - game 4)
– An even first half saw little in the way of goalmouth action. Thistle dominated the second half but the only goal came from Hinds (53) after a neat move involving Panther, Mitchell and Gibson. It should have been more and Mitchell and Oné went close with headers then Thistle saw off late County pressure.
Sat-28-Aug-1999 [h] (1-0) W2-0 Queen of the South (SFL Second Division - game 4)
– A win at last! Elliot (back at the club) scored with a 25-yard shot (5). McKeown dislocated his shoulder and had to go off to have it put back in place (15) but he came back on. The game was in the balance until he slid in at an Elliot corner to double the lead 14 minutes from time. Thistle remained 2nd bottom.
Sat-28-Aug-1993 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Celtic (SFL Premier Division - game 4)
– Celtic were not at their best but were good enough and scored with a low shot after the ball was played back in at a corner (61). Thistle had their moments after that but never seriously threatened. Farningham was sent off (foul, 82). As he walked off it was announced he was the sponsor's man of the match!
Wed-28-Aug-1991 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Rangers (League Cup 3rd Round)
– Man of the match Duffy prevented a heavier defeat with an outstanding display. Rangers took the lead with a goal from ex-JAG Johnston (31). Thistle's best move resulted in McWalter's shot being well saved (46) but a 25-yarder (55) made sure and Rangers eased up. A late flurry came to nothing.
Tue-28-Aug-1990 [h] (0-1) L1-3 Dundee United (League Cup 3rd Round)
– Clydebank. Hard-working Thistle held their own against Premier Division United but neither team looked like scoring. A fine save denied Peebles then a speculative lob deceived Duncan (43). A rebound and a tap-in made it 2-0 (60) then 2 free-kicks (Charnley, 80 and for United (deflected), 83) finished the scoring.
Sat-28-Aug-1982 [h] (3-1) W4-2 East Stirlingshire (League Cup Section 7 - game 5)
– Shire scored (7) but it turned out to be the Watson show. He headed the equaliser (22) then Johnston scored from close in (42). When Doyle was tripped in the box, Watson converted the pen (44). He found Johnston with a cross for the 4th before Shire scored again (84). Jardine was sent off for abuse of a linesman on the hour.
Sat-28-Aug-1976 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Dundee (League Cup Section 1 - game 5)
– After only a handful of matches, Melrose was the best forward on view but unfortunately he was one of few Thistle players who performed creditably. Joe Craig missed 2 sitters, McQuade was out of touch and taken off. The winning goal (57) came as a result of an error by Marr but he wasn't alone.
Wed-28-Aug-1974 [a] (0-0) W2-0 Arbroath (League Cup Section 1 - game 6)
– Arbroath almost scored with a 30-yard lob as well as hitting a post with a 25-yard free-kick but Thistle increasingly had the chances and they took the lead (53) when McQuade prodded home a cross. It was all Thistle after that and McQuade ran in unchallenged for his 2nd (89). They won the section by a point.
Sat-28-Aug-1971 [a] (2-2) W4-2 Arbroath (League Cup Section 7 - game 5)
– After Thistle had won 5 corners, Arbroath went 2-up inside 20 minutes. The first was from a long clearance up the park then two minutes later a header from a free-kick out on the left made it 2-0. Thistle responded with two goals in the last five minutes of the first half. Smith smashed in a vicious low drive then Hansen scored with a shot from just inside the box. After the break Lawrie swung a corner over and Rae, standing unmarked, headed home (51). When Rae was fouled by the keeper Bone converted the penalty for 4-2 (74). Thistle won the section with a game to spare.
Wed-28-Aug-1968 [a] (0-1) L1-2 Rangers (League Cup Section 4 - game 5)
– Rangers took the lead (12) but promptly went from bad to worse. Their 2nd goal came (88) but Hansen scored from 6 yards (89). Thistle might have shown more adventure while Rangers struggled but although they moved the ball about well, the forwards were ineffectual and Gallagher fired straight at the keeper.
Sat-28-Aug-1965 [a] (1-3) L2-6 Dunfermline Athletic (League Cup Section 3 - game 4)
– 3 corners in 3 minutes by Dunfermline set the scene. Hogan equalised an early strike (24) but Thistle seldom threatened and trailed 3-1 at half-time (all headers). Hainey hit the bar just after half-time then Gibb pulled a goal back (69) but that was all Thistle could offer and 3 more goals (2 of them penalties) in the last 10 minutes rubbed it in.
Wed-28-Aug-1963 [h] (2-1) W3-2 Falkirk (League Cup Section 1 - game 5)
– Thistle (much-changed again) scored through Hainey (5). Falkirk missed a pen and although on the back foot they equalised (24). Brown scored from the spot (33) before Duffy made it 3-1 (46). Falkirk had their best spell after that and pulled a goal back (67). A first win but far from impressive, especially up front.
Wed-28-Aug-1957 [a] (3-0) W3-0 Rangers (League Cup Section 2 - game 5)
– Against all the odds! Ewing (8 and 10) with right foot shots and Henderson (13) gave Thistle a 3-goal lead at which point Davidson went off injured but he came back to play on the wing in the second half. Despite his injury, for once, Thistle withstood the second half onslaught and Mathers even hit the bar late on. Fine win.
Sat-28-Aug-1954 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Clyde (League Cup Division A, Section C - game 4)
– Four games in a week probably aided a comfortable win for Clyde. Thistle's forwards were “an ill-assorted lot“ (GH). Clyde took the lead (12) with a pen after a foul by Thomson and the 2nd goal came with 3 defenders left in the scorer's wake (88). Thistle only threatened very late on but seldom went close.
Sat-28-Aug-1948 [a] (1-3) L2-8 Queen of the South (SFL Division A - game 4)
– 14,000 saw Houliston the QOS international No 9 get 5 goals. Sharp scored (13) to make it 2-1 but Thistle trailed 3-1 at half-time. The roof fell in after half-time. Sharp scored again (59) to make it 4-2 but it was a day to forget - especially for Forsyth at centre-half! Thistle were overwhelmed. An “orgy of goal scoring” (SP).
Wed-28-Aug-1946 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Queen of the South (SFL Division A - game 5)
– Thistle became the only unbeaten team in the division but the goals dried up. Queens peppered the Thistle goal for much of the game and Steadward had some fine saves. The defence stood firm no matter what Queens tried and they held out for a fortunate point. The forwards got little chance to shine.
Sat-28-Aug-1943 [a] (1-0) W3-1 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Thistle were “better combined in attack and superior in defensive tactics” (GH). Sharp (12) and Newall (62) gave them a 2-goal lead. Celtic attacked in strength and reduced the lead (74) on the counter and winning 11-2 on corners went all out for a leveller but McSpadyen's low shot (89) secured the win.
Sat-28-Aug-1937 [a] (0-3) L1-3 Aberdeen (SFL First Division - game 4)
– McSpadyen was the best player on the park but 3 goals in 5 minutes early in the first half killed Thistle off. Wallace, who lacked support all afternoon, scored (68) but any chance of a fight-back was hampered when McMenemy went off injured (60) and Sutherland ended the game limping.
Wed-28-Aug-1935 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Dunfermline Athletic (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Despite playing with a winger in goal, 2nd top Dunfermline (weakened by injury) were the better team throughout. They enjoyed no luck at all - hitting the woodwork twice. Hastie kicked off, dribbled his way up field and set up Bain (46) but a goal from a corner (50) levelled things. A fortunate draw.
Sat-28-Aug-1926 [a] (1-0) L1-2 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Thistle might well have deserved a point on their much improved performance. Fraser gave them the lead on half-time but Rangers scored (75 and 79). Thistle were good value but their lightweight forwards lacked physical presence. Gibson, thrown into his 1st game at No5 was magnificent.
Mon-28-Aug-1922 [n] (?-?) L1-2 Motherwell (Lodge Eastmuir Fundraiser)
– Full league teams were to be engaged for this Monday evening affair, played at Well Park in Shettleston for the benefit of a local masonic lodge, but no detailed match report has been found.
Sat-28-Aug-1920 [h] (1-1) W3-1 Raith Rovers (SFL - game 4)
– “Pretty and artful forward work” (GH). Even when they took the lead (15) Rovers never looked like winning. Kerr breasted the ball over the line from a corner (20) then McMullan missed a penalty. Kerr scored again (47) before Blair got the 3rd with a header for a comfortable, deserved win.
Sat-28-Aug-1915 [a] (1-2) D2-2 Motherwell (SFL - game 2)
– Motherwell looked to on the way to victory when they went 2-up but Leitch made it 2-1 from a goalmouth scramble then Thistle's “young bloods” (DR) pressed until half-time. Harris (N) lofted a shot over the defence to complete the fight-back early in the second half. A fair result to “a pleasant game”.
Sat-28-Aug-1909 [a] (0-0) D2-2 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A 13th consecutive league defeat was averted against fellow strugglers Motherwell who took the lead (50) but Thistle soon equalised through McGregor. Branscombe then went off injured but 10-man Thistle scored again (McGregor again) and looked like winning until Motherwell scored with a penalty (90).
Sat-28-Aug-1886 [h] (1-0) W1-0 Vale of Leven (Friendly)
– To the accompaniment of the Whiteinch Reed Band during the match (GEP), Duff in goal kept Vale out “with his hands or otherwise” (GH). Marshall ran the length of the pitch but was stopped in his tracks. Johnston's high shot which caught the keeper's finger tips on the way in (15) was the only goal.
