Sat-27-Aug-2022 [h] (2-1) W2-1 Raith Rovers (SPFL Championship - game 5)
– Exciting and entertaining. Pin-ball in the box saw Tiffoney fire home (3). Mine's “goal“ was deemed off-side. Lawless pounced on an attempted clearance for 2-0 (42) but a poor pass-back led to confusion and a goal (43). A Thistle pen claim was ignored, Rovers hit the post as the second half became increasingly frantic but Thistle held on for the win.
Sat-27-Aug-2016 [h] (0-1) L1-2 Heart of Midlothian (SPFL Premiership - game 3)
– Thistle trailed (16, header at a corner) but made chances in a good, open game. Lindsay (possibly at fault for the goal) scored at a corner when his header went in off the bar (56). Hearts upped the pace but Thistle looked comfortable until a lashed shot (90). Unlucky. Good performance against a good team.
Tue-27-Aug-2013 [h] (0-0) W3-1 Cowdenbeath (League Cup 2nd Round) aet
– AET. Fox saved a penalty (53) and with Thistle lacking a cutting edge it was 0-0 after 90 mins. An angled drive by Elliott (92) made it 1-0 but a min later it was 1-1 after a powerful run through the middle. Fox had a brilliant save, Lawless scored (low shot, 103) then a Muirhead pen (Lawless chopped, 114) sealed it.
Sat-27-Aug-2011 [h] (1-0) W2-1 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Doolan scored when the ball broke to him in the box (20). A much better second half saw Elliot go close then a fine block by Balatoni prevented an equaliser. Queens did equalise (Fox suspect, 61) then both teams had claims for a penalty. Elliot scored from 12 yards (85) before Queens hit the post.
Sat-27-Aug-2005 [h] (1-1) L1-3 Raith Rovers (SFL Second Division - game 4)
– Rovers scored (8) but a close-range header by Brady made it 1-1 (27). With Thistle looking comfortable, 2 goals from individual errors turned the tables - a header from a cross (75) and a 25-yard drive (77). But for Arthur late on it might have been worse. Thistle trooped off to a chorus of boos.
Tue-27-Aug-1996 [h] (0-0) W2-1 Hamilton Academical (Challenge Cup 2nd Round)
– McWilliams gave Thistle the lead (49) then Milne brought out a fine save by the keeper (51). Hamilton showed signs of a fight-back until a hotly disputed pen when Docherty was judged to have been pulled down by the keeper made it 2-0 (Stirling, 70). Accies scored (88) when the defence was outpaced.
Sat-27-Aug-1994 [a] (1-0) L1-2 Falkirk (SFL Premier Division - game 3)
– An uninspired performance littered with missed chances. Falkirk hit the woodwork twice before Thistle eventually got it together and they took a surprise lead with a lovely curling shot by Grant (41) but they regretted missing 2 great chances just after half-time and 2 goals (65, pen and 70) won the 3 points.
Sat-27-Aug-1988 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Clyde had all the early play and a hotly disputed pen (Dempsey hand ball) proved the only goal (20). MacLean just managed to palm a thunderbolt over the bar (32). Hit by injuries and suspensions, Thistle made little impression after half-time and Clyde should have made it more emphatic. “Outpaced and outwitted” (SP).
Sat-27-Aug-1983 [h] (0-1) L1-2 Meadowbank Thistle (League Cup 2nd Round, 2nd leg) agg: L2-4
– AGG: 2-4. O'Hara and Johnston missed chances as Thistle dominated but they fell behind to a head flick from a corner (40). A brilliant free-kick by Jardine in the second half levelled the scores but yet another defensive error lead to the winner. “Our lowest ebb. I've never felt worse” (Cormack, ET).
Wed-27-Aug-1980 [h] (2-0) W3-1 Queen's Park (League Cup 2nd Round, 1st leg)
– Far from impressive, Thistle almost gifted Queens with a short pass-back. The first half finally came to life with 2 goals by Higgins (from close in, 42 and a header from a corner, 44) then Park set up O'Hara for 3-0 (50). Queens then missed 2 pens (the 2nd touched on to a post by Rough) before scoring (74).
Sat-27-Aug-1977 [h] (0-1) L0-4 Rangers (SFL Premier Division - game 3)
– A push by Sheed gave Rangers a disputed pen (44) and after that it was one-way traffic with three second half goals. Hansen was stretchered off (46) and never played for the 1st team again. Rough prevented what would have been an embarrassing score. “They ran us into the ground in the second half” (Auld, GH).
Wed-27-Aug-1975 [h] (2-0) W2-1 Kilmarnock (League Cup Section 4 - game 6)
– John Craig and Houston were in excellent form and when Lawrie hit the post, Joe Craig knocked in the rebound (18). A brilliant turn and shot by Houston made it 2-0 (23). Kilmarnock reduced the lead (48) in a towsy second half and they had a player sent off late on. Section winners with 6 wins out of 6.
Wed-27-Aug-1969 [a] (0-3) L0-4 St Johnstone (League Cup Section 3 - game 6)
– Both teams maintained their LC 100% records - Saints unbeaten, Thistle without a win. Duncan had a good effort saved but soon it was backs to the wall and goals 16, 20 and 44 signalled certain defeat. The game deteriorated but there was still time for a 4th goal (55) before Duncan fired in 2 long-range efforts.
Sat-27-Aug-1966 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Falkirk (League Cup Section 3 - game 4)
– Two evenly matched teams. Ex-JAG Cowan was the main threat as Falkirk had a lot of pressure. Stout defences kept the scores level and Thistle's forwards were too eager and wasted several chances. Finally, 324 minutes into the season Thistle got a goal when Roxburgh headed in a Gallagher cross (54).
Sat-27-Aug-1960 [h] (0-2) L1-4 Rangers (League Cup Section 2 - game 4)
– Goals 23 and 29 made it 2-0 at half-time. Wright brought out a brilliant save then a rebounded pen off Freebairn (offence outside the box) made it 3-0 (48). Smith made it 3-1 (58) then “scored” again but it was inexplicably disallowed. Thistle were denied a pen (indirect free-kick inside the box given) before a 4th goal (82).
Wed-27-Aug-1958 [a] (0-1) L0-3 Queen of the South (League Cup Section 3 - game 5)
– Thistle had 2 reserve debutants in the side - but so did Queens and they did most of the damage. Thistle never quite coped with their forceful play. They scored 3, hit the bar once and Davidson kicked one off the line with Renucci beaten. The home keeper was equal to Thistle's attacks - such as they were.
Sat-27-Aug-1955 [a] (0-0) L1-2 Heart of Midlothian (League Cup Section 2 - game 4)
– Section leaders Hearts deserved their win on pressure but it was a poor game and the ball took a pounding. Rough tactics by both centre-halves went unpunished. Hearts took the lead (49) but the outstanding Wright equalised from a Sharp pass through the middle (52). A scramble in the goalmouth produced the winner (79).
Wed-27-Aug-1952 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Celtic (League Cup Division A, Section A - game 5)
– Ledgerwood had some excellent saves. MacKenzie went close from 20 yards then Howitt missed a good chance when clean through. The only goal came in 68 minutes when Ledgerwood brilliantly parried a shot but couldn't recover in time to save the tap-in. Celtic probably just edged it on pressure.
Sat-27-Aug-1949 [a] (0-1) D1-1 Motherwell (League Cup Division A, Section C - game 4)
– A gallant draw. O'Donnell was injured and Thistle played for 75 minutes with 10 men. Motherwell's good start faded but they took the lead (43). Walker moved to the centre and with MacKenzie back to his best, the equaliser came when he hoodwinked several defenders and “placed perfectly” (SP) (69).
Wed-27-Aug-1947 [h] (0-1) L0-1 Rangers (SFL Division A - game 2)
– A re-jigged forward line played some fine football and Brown was the driving force. After 20 minutes solid Thistle pressure Rangers scored then only a brilliant save prevented Brown equalising. The second half saw more pressure and with more composure it could have been a better result. Unlucky.
Wed-27-Aug-1941 [h] (3-2) W5-3 Queen's Park (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– A header from a corner put Queens ahead (4) then a fine move was finished off for 2-0 (17). Gourlay (20), Newall (25) and Sharp (W) (27) put Thistle in front. A dubious penalty was converted by Sharp (A) (65) just as Queens were threatening then Newall scored again (80) before a late penalty for Queens.
Sat-27-Aug-1938 [h] (2-0) W3-1 Heart of Midlothian (SFL First Division - game 4)
– 2 excellent goals by McCrindle from passes from the right wing (15 and 20) put Thistle well on top. Yet again McKennan and McSpadyen were in great form. Hearts fired a pen wide before half-time. The second half saw them pile on the pressure and they scored (70) but a breakaway set up Wallace (77).
Sat-27-Aug-1932 [h] (1-1) L1-2 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Top of the league Hamilton missed an early penalty then in his 1st of only 2 appearances, Jordan opened the scoring (lofting the ball over the keeper, 16). A header at a corner (30) levelled and a fine goal in the second half won it. Ineffectual Thistle had too many players inexperienced or off-form.
Wed-27-Aug-1930 [a] (1-1) D3-3 King's Park (Robert Baird Benefit)
– Surprisingly competitive benefit match for King's Park centre-half Baird. It was played at a fast pace “despite the heat“ (GH). Miller opened the scoring (10) but King's Park equalised with a free-kick by half-time. They went ahead (80) but Cunningham equalised (82) before “a beautiful goal“ (SO) (86) then a Torbet penalty (90).
Mon-27-Aug-1928 [h] (?-?) D1-1 Rangers (Willie Salisbury Testimonial)
– Willie Salisbury testimonial.
Sat-27-Aug-1927 [h] (1-1) W2-1 Dunfermline Athletic (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Thistle came from behind to maintain their 100% record. Hair and Kinloch went close before Boardman hit the bar yet it was Dunfermline who scored first against the run of play (31). Salisbury equalised (35) with a fast low shot. Hair missed a good chance just after half-time but Ness set up Boardman's low shot (73) for the win.
Sat-27-Aug-1921 [a] (1-2) L1-2 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Ayr were the better, more enterprising side in this match and went 2-up mid-way through the first half. Blair scored from 12 yards just before half-time but there were no more goals in a bruising second half. Campbell had some fine saves but the forwards were poor and only Blair earned pass marks.
Sat-27-Aug-1910 [h] (0-1) W2-1 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 2)
– The first half was even in terms of play but Motherwell took their chance when Howden let a 20-yarder through his legs then Thistle had a goal chalked off for off-side. They attacked strongly in the second half and new signing Elmore set up Gardiner for a brilliant leveller then King got a deserved winner (80).
Mon-27-Aug-1906 [a] (3-2) W3-2 Benburb (Friendly)
– Benburb FC fund raiser. They took an early 2-goal lead but Thistle got into the game and goals by McGregor (2) and Sommen put them ahead at half-time. Benburb had a good second half and all but scored. They had a goal bound shot in the last second but the ref blew for time before the ball hit the net. Cruel!
Sat-27-Aug-1904 [a] (1-1) D2-2 St Mirren (SFL First Division - game 2)
– 2 evenly matched teams. Curran broke away down the left and, unopposed, shot and scored to give Thistle the lead but St Mirren levelled 5 minutes before half-time. They played a hard game in the second half and took the lead after several close things but McIlvenny equalised from a scramble. A fair result.
Wed-27-Aug-1902 [h] (2-2) L*2-2 Celtic (Ibrox Disaster Tournament Semi Final) * L2-6 corners
– Ibrox disaster tournament. Lost 2-5 on corners. 2x35 minutes were played. Kennedy ran through to set up Muirhead (1). Celtic levelled then Gray (R) scored from a Marshall corner only for Celtic to level “beating Howden rather easily” (GH). The heavy park took its toll and it was decided on corners.
Mon-27-Aug-1900 [h] (?-?) D1-1 Clyde (Friendly)
– With a number of reserves playing, Thistle performed “very creditably” (GH). A new centre-forward (Murray from Forrest Mechanics) made his debut but it was Freebairn who scored.
Sat-27-Aug-1898 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Third Lanark (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Disjointed Thistle made little impact and the forwards found the home defence too strong. The winner was an unsavable shot (15). In the second half Paul had an attempt magnificently saved. There was nothing between the teams and Thistle we unlucky not to take a point. Scott had an excellent debut.
Sat-27-Aug-1892 [h] (3-3) L3-4 St Bernard's (Scottish Alliance - game 2)
– There were goals a-plenty in the first half. Thistle went 2-down in less than 10 minutes but scored 2 through Murray and Gilchrist to level. The visitors went ahead but Paul equalised before half-time. The winner 5 minutes into the second half was “a beauty” (GH).
Sat-27-Aug-1887 [a] (3-1) W3-1 Cambuslang (Friendly)
– Thistle opened with “a beautiful high shot“ (GEP) then a goal following a corner made it 2-0. Cambuslang pulled a goal back (15). Play was even for a while before “a doubtful goal“ made it 3-1. The second half was a bit of a stalemate and Thistle ran out 3-1 winners. “Paul and Suter combined beautifully“.
