Sat-26-Aug-2023 [h] (2-1) W3-1 Queen's Park (SPFL Championship - game 3)
– An entertaining, open game against a good QP side. Ever-eager to have a go McInroy broke his duck from a pass by Lawless (26). Graham doubled the lead from a looping pass into the 6 yard box by Lawless (30). Thistle were caught cold 2 minutes later but a defensive error was finished off by McInroy for 3-1 (57). Much improved. 3-assists Lawless MOTM.
Sat-26-Aug-2017 [h] (2-2) L3-4 Aberdeen (SPFL Premiership - game 4)
– Aberdeen opened (5) but Erskine from 20 yards (8) and Doolan from 1 yard (13) scored. A silly pen conceded levelled things (42) then Cerny had a brilliant save. A top corner strike (52), Keown's far post header (54) and a driven cross (84) made it 4-3. Keown was sent off (90). Dons went top, JAGS bottom=.
Tue-26-Aug-2014 [a] (1-0) W1-0 Greenock Morton (League Cup 2nd Round)
– A poor game with few chances. Balatoni headed over then a glancing header by Morton should have been better. Doolan turned and drilled a low shot into the corner (45). Morton fired wide from a 1-on-1 when Balatoni was caught in possession (53). Unimpressive but just did enough to get through.
Tue-26-Aug-2008 [a] (0-0) W2-1 Dundee (League Cup 2nd Round)
– Thistle played some neat, attractive football in the first half but were a little fortunate Dundee hadn't scored. An open second half saw both teams go close before a Maxwell cross deceived the keeper (78). 3 minutes later it was 1-1 but a penalty by Harkins (foul, 87) sent the Thistle fans home happy.
Sat-26-Aug-2006 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Boyd went close, McCulloch grazed a post, a Roberts corner was scrambled clear, Donnelly's shot was blocked. In contrast, Clyde had one shot on target in the first half. Donnelly hit the side netting, Clyde rattled the bar (67 and 85). It was one of those games nothing would go in but still unbeaten in the league.
Sat-26-Aug-2000 [h] (0-1) D1-1 Berwick Rangers (SFL Second Division - game 4)
– Berwick scored (34) with a header from a free-kick. Hardie headed an equaliser from a Stirling corner (85). Thistle were booed off after scraping the draw and Lambie promised changes. (There were 7 v Queen's Park.) “The worst we've played this season“… “Furious Lambie blasts lazy bunch of cheats“ (SM).
Sat-26-Aug-1995 [h] (0-0) D1-1 Hibernian (SFL Premier Division - game 1)
– Thistle had their share of chances but Hibs gave Thistle a football lesson with flowing moves that sliced open the defence at will. When a defender slipped Gibson scored (46) and shocked Hibs into retrieving the situation. A powerful shot got them a deserved equaliser (54). They hit the woodwork 3 times. A lucky point.
Sat-26-Aug-1989 [h] (2-2) D2-2 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A cracking derby against the lodgers. Clyde took the lead when Murdoch parried a fierce drive (7) but a low 25-yard shot by Kerr (10) put Thistle level. Wright turned in a Charnley cross (17) but a pen for hand ball (32) made it 2-2. The second half was an anti-climax. Clyde hit the post and Campbell scored but it was off-side.
Wed-26-Aug-1981 [h] (1-3) L1-5 Ayr United (League Cup Section 4 - game 6)
– O'Hara set up Higgins with a through ball (7) and it all looked to be going well until Ayr levelled with a shot after the ball had come off the bar (14). Goals (36, 44, 81 and 88) made for a humiliating night. Ayr's Frye scored 4 of the goals. “Frye roasts Thistle” (APJ).
Sat-26-Aug-1978 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Rangers (SFL Premier Division - game 3)
– Given the number of chances made this should have been a high scoring match. Thistle defended deeply but could have scored 2 or 3 times. Rough had some fine saves and a free-kick by future-JAG Watson hit the post. Ex-JAG Forsyth cleared a Melrose effort off the line late on but a win would have been greedy.
Sat-26-Aug-1972 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Cowdenbeath (League Cup Section 1 - game 5)
– The fans voiced their disapproval as Cowdenbeath pressure mounted. They scored with a header from close in (25) but a Rae (T) header (26) levelled things. Better play after half-time saw more chances but Thistle fell behind from a breakaway (pen, 57) before a header by Rae (T) spared the blushes (77).
Wed-26-Aug-1970 [h] (1-2) L1-3 East Fife (League Cup Section 5 - game 6)
– The more experienced Fifers deserved their win. Glavin scored (4) but 5 minutes later it was 1-1 (a 25-yarder). The visitors enjoyed some luck as Thistle hit the woodwork and had shots blocked but the 2 headed goals (22 and 71) were decisive. However, Thistle won the section from the Fifers by 0.03 of a goal.
Sat-26-Aug-1967 [a] (1-2) L1-2 Airdrieonians (League Cup Section 1 - game 4)
– Roxburgh and Duncan had already gone close before a poor clearance by Taylor led to him being lobbed (19) and 3 minutes later it was 2-0. Thistle pressed but couldn't finish then Gibb hit the bar from 30 yards and Duncan knocked in the rebound (34). A header by Gibb was as close Thistle got to a leveller.
Wed-26-Aug-1964 [a] (0-2) L0-4 Kilmarnock (League Cup Section 3 - game 5)
– Thistle were so poor that Kilmarnock's experiment with the new fangled 4-2-4 system was inconclusive. Well taken goals on 42, 44, 53 and 55 underlined how much they were ahead. It might have been worse. They had 2 goals disallowed for off-side. Not at the races.
Sat-26-Aug-1961 [a] (0-1) L2-3 Celtic (League Cup Section 1 - game 4)
– Both teams had close things and, if anything, Thistle had more of the early play but just as they looked like gaining the upper hand, Celtic scored (35). McBride equalised (65) but Celtic scored soon after. It was 3-1 on 76 minutes before Smith scored with a pen after he had been fouled in the box (86).
Wed-26-Aug-1959 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Celtic (League Cup Section 1 - game 5)
– Thistle never matched Celtic in “spirit, technique or speed“ (GH). When they took the lead (ball hitting off the scorer, 9) Thistle never looked like recovering. The half-backs never got going and the forwards got little service. Luck deserted them on the hour when a Keenan shot was cleared off the line. Celtic got their 2nd (fine run and shot, 89).
Thu-26-Aug-1954 [a] (1-1) D1-1 Queen's Park (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final replay) aet
– AET. Still no decision. Queens scored with their first attack (3) thanks to poor defending but they sat back and Crowe headed in an equaliser from a MacKenzie corner just on half-time. Kerr smacked the bar from 30 yards in the second half and MacKenzie went close twice in extra time (one shot cleared off the line).
Wed-26-Aug-1953 [h] (2-0) W3-0 Stirling Albion (League Cup Division A, Section D - game 5)
– Thistle dominated and scored (14) when a MacKenzie free-kick was dummied by Sharp and Wright scored. An error by the keeper let in Sharp (35). MacKenzie made sure (78) when he outstripped the whole Albion defence and chipped the keeper. The mystery was how it was only 3-0. Albion were outclassed.
Sat-26-Aug-1950 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Heart of Midlothian (League Cup Division A, Section C - game 4)
– A powerful angled drive (3) and a fierce free-kick by ex-JAG Parker deflected past Henderson (88) won the game. Hearts dominated possession but their finishing was tame, although they did hit the post with a lob. Thistle were 2nd best and seldom threatened and McGowan was the best player on the day.
Sat-26-Aug-1944 [h] (1-1) L1-2 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Shankly was unavailable but this was a much better performance. Thistle played some attractive football, were solid in defence but lacked a cutting edge. Colgan equalised (43) Rangers' opener (26) with a “picture header” (SP) but a dramatic drive (83) finished it. Thistle had “gusto but no guile”.
Sat-26-Aug-1933 [a] (0-2) L0-3 Aberdeen (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Tinkering with the selection began. McCartney played his only game for the club and Miller was tried at No 9 but losing 3 goals a game was becoming a habit. Aberdeen took the lead (2) and from then on the result was never in doubt. It was 2-0 at half-time and a 3rd goal near the end wrapped it up.
Wed-26-Aug-1925 [n] (?-?) W7-1 Queen's Park (Opening of Dunoon Stand)
– Dunoon. To commemorate the opening of the Dunoon Stadium stand. It was an easy win and there were hat-tricks by Brown and McDougal with one from Torbet. “The council secured teams of the first magnitude in the football world” (AS) to commemorate the opening.
Sat-26-Aug-1922 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Clyde (SFL First Division - game 2)
– The teams were “more vigorous than scientific” (SC) and there was nothing much for the 21,500 crowd to get excited about. Defences were on top throughout and neither set of forwards could make any impression. Two evenly matched teams deservedly shared the points. “Spoiling game at Firhill” (SP).
Tue-26-Aug-1919 [h] (1-0) W3-0 Raith Rovers (SFL - game 4)
– Two goals from Harris (N) and 1 from Mitchell earned this comfortable win. It was entertaining once the teams mastered the heavy pitch. Bowie set up Harris 1-0 (5). Newcomers Rovers played some good football but it was Thistle who got the goals through Mitchell (54) then a Harris penalty late on.
Sat-26-Aug-1916 [h] (1-0) W3-0 Ayr United (SFL - game 2)
– A Whittle header from Bowie's cross gave Thistle the lead but fine defending by Ayr (whose left-winger only came on just after the goal) kept it at 1-0. The second half saw a McTavish dribble and shot partially saved and Whittle knocked it in and he went on to complete his hat-trick. Thistle pressed and impressed.
Tue-26-Aug-1913 [h] (1-0) W1-0 Rangers (Frank Branscombe Benefit)
– Testimonial for Branscombe. In fine weather a brisk start saw both teams have chances but Thistle soon had the best of things. After Branscombe went close, a fine attacking move involving Hamilton and Branscombe saw Harris score from close in. Only good defending by Rangers (playing several fringe players) kept the score down.
Sat-26-Aug-1911 [a] (1-1) W2-1 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Thistle took the lead (15) with “a beautiful header” (SC) by Raisbeck from a free-kick but a good shot made it 1-1 just on half-time. The second half was keenly fought although Thistle were not as effective. Motherwell improved but their forwards were wasteful. They did however hit the bar but King grabbed a late winner.
Sat-26-Aug-1905 [a] (1-1) L1-2 Third Lanark (SFL First Division - game 2)
– In miserable weather, Thirds took the lead despite Thistle having had the bulk of the play but Hamilton deservedly equalised with “a grand shot“ (GH) before half-time. Thistle attacked for most of the second half and had the “hardest of hard luck“ in not scoring. Thirds did once more however, (60).
Wed-26-Aug-1903 [a] (0-1) D1-1 Port Glasgow Athletic (Friendly)
– Only about 500 turned up due to the wet weather (GT). Neither team was at full strength with fringe and junior players getting a run-out. Port led at half-time but a goal by Gillespie in the second half ensured it ended in a draw. A decent game despite the conditions and a fair result.
Sat-26-Aug-1899 [h] (2-1) W2-1 Morton (SFL Second Division - game 2)
– Thistle pushed Morton back and Proudfoot (header from a McDougall cross) and Paul (after fine work by Freebairn) scored but Morton scored just before half-time. Thistle then fell out of the game although Proudfoot saw his goal chalked off (off-side). “Weak shooting and stubborn defence” (GT).
Sat-26-Aug-1893 [h] (0-1) L0-3 Abercorn (SFL Second Division - game 2)
– Thistle had a goal chalked off for off-side before Abercorn scored. In the second half Crozier was a busy keeper but performed well. Eventually however it was 2-0 and then 3 just on the final whistle. Thistle “would have got at least two goals by a little more headwork. The forwards were a trifle disjointed“ (GEP).
