Sat-25-Aug-2018 [a] (0-1) L1-3 Dundee United (SPFL Championship - game 3)
– The loss of O'Ware to injury (4) may have contributed to poor defending of 2 headers from a free-kick (6) and a corner (78). Thistle had a good spell after half-time. Penrice went close then Spittal wasted a header. A tap-in from a cut back (86) made it 3 then Erskine nodded in the keeper's fumble (92). No threat up front.
Tue-25-Aug-2015 [h] (0-1) L0-1 Falkirk (League Cup 2nd Round)
– Sloppy passing, poor final balls into the box, wasted chances. Falkirk scored (32) when a corner wasn't fully cleared. Pogba wasted the best chance to level when he took too long and his shot was blocked. Falkirk were content to sit in but in truth Thistle hardly threatened and had virtually nothing on target all night.
Sat-25-Aug-2012 [h] (1-0) W3-0 Dumbarton (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Dumbarton almost scored from 40 yards with Fox out of his goal then a Doolan header (15) gave Thistle the lead. Despite their dominance it took an Erskine goal (steered the ball in from 6 yards, 62) to calm the nerves then Bannigan scored from an Erskine pass (69). It should have been more.
Tue-25-Aug-2009 [h] (1-0) L1-2 Queen of the South (League Cup 2nd Round)
– Poor defending from the start almost cost Thistle dear. They came on to a game, but didn't seriously threaten. Donnelly beat they keeper all ends up with a free-kick (30). Queens equalised (from 6 yards, 63) then Rowson went close from 30 yards. The winner (looking suspiciously offside) came on 90.
Sat-25-Aug-2007 [a] (0-2) L0-3 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Dundee went 1-up (curling free-kick, 8) then Harkins went close from 25 yards. An unmarked header doubled the lead (16). It wasn't all Dundee however and Buchanan and Storey gave some hope but a shot from close in (56) ended it. Archibald got a 2nd yellow (77) to complete a miserable day. Well beaten.
Sat-25-Aug-2001 [a] (0-0) W3-1 Arbroath (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Play in the first half was disappointing although McLean's early goal was ruled off-side. He was set up by Britton for the opener (57) then Archibald scored a rare double (a 20-yard strike, keeper at fault, 73 and a header from a corner, 75). Arthur replaced the injured Gow late on and Arbroath got a consolation (90).
Sat-25-Aug-1990 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Both teams had chances early on but it was 0-0 at half-time. Ex-JAG Dodds opened for Dundee with a turn and shot (49) then Duncan kept the game alive until Charnley chested down a cross and fired home (62). Thistle had a good spell after that but it ended 1-1. An evenly contested game and a fair result.
Sat-25-Aug-1984 [a] (1-1) L1-2 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Excellent free-kicks (low and hard, 7 and a curling shot round the wall, 86) by future Scotland captain McAllister settled this closely fought match. Hutchison headed in a Walker cross from 12 yards (8). Sub O'Hara hit the post as Thistle frustrated Motherwell but the winner came too late to reply.
Wed-25-Aug-1982 [a] (0-0) W3-0 East Fife (League Cup Section 7 - game 4)
– A tough first half saw East Fife put up stubborn resistance but in the second half Thistle took over as they wilted and took the lead (53) when a powerful run by Watson set up Johnston. Park pounced on a poor pass-back (61) and Jardine cracked in the 3rd 4 minutes from time. Top of section 7.
Sat-25-Aug-1979 [h] (1-0) W2-1 Rangers (SFL Premier Division - game 3)
– Thistle dominated the first half and but had only a Melrose goal (9) after a driving run by McAdam to show for it. Under pressure after half-time, Park broke and set up Melrose who was pulled down and McAdam converted the pen (76). Rangers scored (82) but Rough was outstanding, as was Doyle.
Wed-25-Aug-1976 [a] (3-1) D3-3 Heart of Midlothian (League Cup Section 1 - game 4)
– Thistle went behind (1) but played some excellent football. Melrose jinked round the keeper to level (12) then headed home after McQuade had left 2 defenders in his wake (30). Joe Craig made it 3-1 (41). Melrose hit the post just after half-time but Hearts fought back with a soft pen (62) and a late header (86). Pulsating.
Sat-25-Aug-1973 [h] (1-0) L1-3 St Johnstone (League Cup Section 3 - game 5)
– Kellachan (playing at No 11) shot just over (1) and while Saints had a few chances, Thistle had the edge until half-time. A Glavin shot was cleared off the line but he scored with a downward header (20). A better Saints performance saw Thistle surrender the midfield and goals 49, 80 and 90 made for another defeat.
Wed-25-Aug-1971 [h] (0-0) D1-1 East Fife (League Cup Section 7 - game 4)
– “Thistle switch sets the fuse”. “Partick Thistle unfurled their second division championship flag but failed to salute it” (GH). “JAGS made it so hard” (ET). The game was largely forgettable except for the last quarter of an hour when Forsyth replaced McQuade who had had a disappointing match. East Fife took the lead with a header from a corner but Thistle levelled a minute later when Rae headed in a Coulston cross. East Fife hit back and Rough had 2 good saves to keep things level. Thistle pressure almost resulted in an own goal at the other end. It was fast and furious till the end and the visitors put up a solid wall to protect their point.
Wed-25-Aug-1965 [a] (0-0) L1-2 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Back to Kilmarnock and defeat, but this time the score flattered the home team. Thistle were skilful and spirited but found the Kilmarnock keeper in fine form. Niven was beaten by a header (71) and again (74) before Roxburgh's shot in the last minute gave unlucky Thistle their first goal of the season.
Sat-25-Aug-1962 [a] (2-0) W3-0 Aberdeen (League Cup Section 3 - game 4)
– After 10 minutes when Thistle were pushed back, they went ahead when Williamson knocked in a rebounded McParland shot (12) then McParland scored through the middle with a Hainey pass (20). They were comfortable in the second half and Whitelaw scored (81). There were 4 bookings in the last 10 minutes.
Mon-25-Aug-1958 [a] (1-1) L1-2 Queen's Park (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Even before Ewing was stretchered off (42) Thistle struggled against Second Division Queens who took the lead with a penalty (14) but Kerr (looking off-side) levelled (30). A first-time left foot shot from 18 yards (61) secured a deserved win against a poor, disjointed Thistle side struggling to find any consistency.
Sat-25-Aug-1956 [h] (1-0) W2-0 Falkirk (League Cup Section 4 - game 4)
– The fans did not appreciate the lethargic start but Ewing gave Thistle the lead when his header smacked the bar and he scored with the rebound (15). Thistle were superior at half-back but the forwards were wayward at times. 15 minutes from time Wright scored from 8 yards for a comfortable win.
Sat-25-Aug-1951 [a] (1-1) L1-5 Hibernian (League Cup Division A, Section B - game 4)
– Hibs took the lead (4). McGowan shaved the bar from 40 yards then Crawford headed in from 6 yards (42). McCredie went close but it was all Hibs after half-time. 4 goals in 15 minutes saw Thistle off (shot through Ledgerwood's legs (70), a goal from a corner (75), a pen (hand ball) and after fine interpassing (85)).
Sat-25-Aug-1945 [a] (1-1) W2-1 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Glover tapped in (20) after fine work by Brown but Thirds levelled (36) when Steadward was robbed ushering the ball out for a goal-kick. The ball was screwed in off the bar from the touchline. It was poor fare and with Glover limping on the wing a replay looked likely until Sharp crashed home a McGeachy pass (87).
Sat-25-Aug-1934 [h] (1-0) W2-1 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Thistle had a bit more to offer than Queens but neither set of forwards distinguished themselves. A cross by Regan set up McLennan for the opener (36) then Regan made it 2-0 (58, looking off-side). Queens pulled one back (62) but it was largely Thistle after that. A comfortable, if narrow, win.
Tue-25-Aug-1931 [a] (1-0) W1-0 Heart of Midlothian (SFL First Division - game 5)
– A penalty by Torbet (hand ball, 5) was the winner. Both teams missed chances in the first half and Morrison was the main culprit. A better second half saw Thistle improving and Ness and Torbet on the wings caused no end of bother. A good win but it could have been more emphatic.
Sat-25-Aug-1928 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Once the new reconstructed Brockville Park was officially opened, play was fast from the start as both teams went on the attack but they found defences were on top. Falkirk edged the first half and Jackson had some fine saves. Thistle were better after half-time but couldn't break the deadlock. A point was a fair.
Sat-25-Aug-1923 [a] (1-1) W2-1 Morton (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Unconvincing Thistle carried some luck but did enough. Both teams went close before Morton opened the scoring but Lambie equalised 5 minutes later (30) - although it might have been an OG by a defender. Kinloch hit the bar then Hair went close. An even second half saw Kinloch get the winner from a corner.
Sat-25-Aug-1917 [a] (0-0) D0-0 St Mirren (SFL - game 2)
– Both defences were sound and the forwards had few opportunities to make any impression. If anything, St Mirren had the majority of the play but unchanged Thistle had spells of pressure too. An interesting game right up to the finish but a “poverty-stricken exhibition“ (DR). “Missed and Messed“.
Wed-25-Aug-1909 [h] (0-1) L0-1 Morton (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Ibrox. Morton were the better team - but not by much. Howden made a mess of a high ball and left an open goal (20). Thistle fought on but couldn't find the net. Raisbeck was outstanding. He set up Branscombe for an equaliser but he took too long and the ball was cleared. A 12th consecutive league defeat.
Sat-25-Aug-1906 [h] (1-0) W5-0 Morton (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Wilkie and Campbell set up Kennedy for the opener and McGregor got the 2nd not long after half-time. Campbell missed a pen but Wilkie got the 3rd soon after. McGregor completed his hat-trick with 2 more for an emphatic win. Morton only showed in the first half and were well beaten by the end. “Disaster” (GT).
Mon-25-Aug-1902 [a] (?-?) L1-2 Ashfield Select (Ashfield Fundraiser)
– A strong performance from the junior select won them the honours in this Monday evening game at Saracen Park. “After the match, the players and officials were entertained by tea, and a large party sat down under the presidency of Mr. D. H. Belch. A very happy hour was spent in song and sentiment. The chairman paid some very pretty compliments to the Thistle for their generosity to the juniors, and Mr. Ritchie Robertson, who replied, said his club had always tried and would continue to do all they could to foster and develop the game among the juniors” (SR).
Sat-25-Aug-1900 [a] (1-2) L2-5 St Mirren (SFL First Division - game 3)
– St Mirren went 1-up (1) and 2-up before Hyslop scored just on half-time. The second half was mostly Saints although Atherton equalised with a shot the keeper couldn't hold. They rattled in another 3. “Partick Thistle…seem determined to drift thus early in the season” (GH). Prophetic! Thistle also missed a pen at 2-0 taken by Haggart.
Sat-25-Aug-1888 [a] (2-2) L2-3 Cambuslang (Friendly)
– Thistle found themselves behind in just 5 mins. They had a few half chances but they fell further behind. They enjoyed a spell of pressure however and Johnston scored twice in quick succession to level things before half-time. The second half was a bit of a stalemate but Cambuslang got the winner near the end.
Sat-25-Aug-1883 [a] (?-?) L1-4 Cartvale (Friendly)
– The ninth season gets off to a bad start at Cartbridge Park.
