Sat-24-Aug-2024 [a] (0-0) L1-2 Falkirk (SPFL Championship - game 3)
– On an afternoon of annoying refereeing, Stanway was sent-off for a second yellow (simulation, 25) leaving Thistle up against it for over an hour. They defended resolutely and Roberts pulled off a string of excellent saves, but too much space was afforded and a 30-yard screamer (58) was the punishment. Debutant Ablade squeezed home a Turner pass (76) but too much space (again) allowed Falkirk the winner (83) from 12 yards.
Sat-24-Aug-2013 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Motherwell (SPFL Premiership - game 4)
– Motherwell gave Thistle no time to settle and they scored (20) from close in. Fox had a fine save to keep it at 1-0 at half-time. The full-backs pushed forward in the second half and Thistle were transformed. It was Motherwell's turn to defend but there was no-one with a killer instinct to finish off. Unlucky not to draw.
Tue-24-Aug-2010 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Falkirk (League Cup 2nd Round)
– A lively first half saw chances at both ends as each team had its spells of pressure. Poor defending let Falkirk in to score the only goal (57) and it should have been 2-0 soon after. Thistle pressed and had a Kinniburgh header cleared off the line but fine goalkeeping and a goal line clearance denied Thistle ET.
Tue-24-Aug-2004 [a] (3-0) W5-2 Stenhousemuir (League Cup 2nd Round)
– Goals by Gibson (B) from close in when a Dowie header hit he bar (13), an Escalas shot (20) and Fleming (38, penalty for hand ball) had Thistle cruising at half-time. A nervy 20 min spell at the start of the second half saw them under pressure and concede 2 goals (51 and 65) but Hinds scored (84 and 86) for a 5-2 win.
Sat-24-Aug-2002 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Celtic (Scottish Premier League - game 4)
– A fighting display against an off-form Celtic side but the threat was limited, despite playing 3 up front. They had lots of possession and numerous chances but could only manage one goal (Larson chested the ball over the line from about 4 inches, 72). “Celtic shrugged us aside” (Lambie).
Sat-24-Aug-1996 [a] (0-0) L0-1 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 2)
– An unsavoury match. Thistle had a promising first half but couldn't find the net. A header was adjudged to have crossed the line (53) for 1-0 then ex-JAG Craig and Evans clashed and were red-carded (53) They “met“ in the tunnel. Late on a stonewall pen was denied and Turner was sent off for dissent.
Tue-24-Aug-1993 [a] (0-0) W1-0 Morton (League Cup 3rd Round)
– A narrow win in an ill-tempered match. The first half was even but Watson was taken to hospital with a broken nose. After half-time Morton had the bulk of the play and reorganised Thistle rode their luck at times - woodwork saved them twice - but Craig crashed home a long throw-in (76) and they held on until the end.
Sat-24-Aug-1991 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Stirling Albion (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Albion came with a defence in depth game plan and good goalkeeping kept Thistle at bay as McLaughlin, Irons and McGlashan all went close. Albion blasted over from 8 yards just on half-time then things perked up when English came on as a sub and Shaw beat 2 men and crossed for his winning header (75).
Sat-24-Aug-1985 [a] (0-0) D2-2 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 3)
– With 8 bookings, even by Airdrie standards, this was a rough-house. Played at a furious pace, Airdrie had the bulk of the chances and hit the post. A pen (52) put them ahead but Donnelly (J) also scored with one (62). Yet another pen (72) put Airdrie ahead again but Donnelly scored his 2nd with a neat 15-yard lob (76).
Sat-24-Aug-1974 [a] (0-1) L1-3 Dumbarton (League Cup Section 1 - game 5)
– Dumbarton took the lead (19) but changes at half-time produced a better performance and Glavin equalised with a free-kick (64). The Thistle defence looked vulnerable to cross balls however and Dumbarton duly scored twice (81 and 89) leaving all 4 teams with 5 points in a tight section with one game left.
Sat-24-Aug-1968 [h] (0-0) W2-0 Morton (League Cup Section 4 - game 4)
– Morton made the early running with Thistle only seen occasionally in attack. They gradually made an impression but it was still 0-0 at half-time. After the substitute had been used, Brown went off injured but the 10 men went ahead when O'Neill scored (53) then a fast low shot by Coulston sealed the win (54).
Sat-24-Aug-1963 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Motherwell (League Cup Section 1 - game 4)
– Ex-JAG McBride scored (7) but Thistle responded positively and Motherwell's keeper was soon in action from Staite, Hainey and McParland. Play raged from end to end but Thistle's forwards couldn't apply a killer punch that their build-up play deserved. A 2nd goal came after a shot came off Niven (90).
Wed-24-Aug-1960 [a] (2-3) L3-6 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Brown gifted Rangers an OG (10) but Donlevy equalised from the spot (Smith fouled, 18). Smith equalised Rangers' 2nd goal (28) with a header but a pen (trip, 33) made it 3-2 at half-time. Thistle had no answer to Rangers' rampant forwards after half-time and the game was over at 6-2 before Hogan scored (73).
Sat-24-Aug-1957 [h] (1-1) L1-4 Raith Rovers (League Cup Section 2 - game 4)
– A goal! Smith hit the bar then Rovers had a shot kicked off the line. Time: 2 mins. It was no surprise when Rovers headed the opener (23) although Ewing headed in soon after. MacKenzie hit the post but, with Smith limping on the wing after half-time , it was virtually all Rovers and their No 8 went on to score all 4 goals.
Wed-24-Aug-1955 [h] (1-0) W4-1 Queen's Park (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Far from convincing, the score flattered Thistle. An OG gave them a half-time lead but Queens enjoyed a good spell in the second half, hit the bar then levelled with Ledgerwood making no attempt to save the shot. McParland (88 and 90) and Davidson (pen, 89) got Thistle off the hook with an unimpressive performance.
Tue-24-Aug-1954 [h] (1-1) D1-1 Queen's Park (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Wright scored from a Crowe through pass (7) but the lead was short-lived (a header at a corner, 8). McInnes was injured (36) and was a passenger thereafter. Thistle did however make and miss several good chances to tie the game up after half-time but the Queens' keeper was in fine form and his team were due a replay.
Wed-24-Aug-1949 [a] (0-0) L2-4 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Despite the 6 goals, “Glasgow Cup boredom” (GH). Thistle never matched Thirds' power and shrewdness. They raced to a 2-goal lead early in the second half (the 2nd a soft pen) before Walker scored with a brilliant header but they went further ahead. Howitt made it 3-2 but the 4th goal (81) was well deserved.
Sat-24-Aug-1946 [h] (1-0) W4-0 Queen's Park (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Queens took the game to Thistle (missing Husband) and the pressure was only relieved with McKennan's header (40). They never gave in but O'Donnell (a beautiful volley, 53) doubled the lead. He scored again (83) then Glover (88) made the win look more emphatic than it was as plucky Queens tired.
Sat-24-Aug-1940 [h] (1-0) W1-0 Albion Rovers (Southern League - game 3)
– A narrow win but a goal by Rodger (40) after good work by Picken was enough. It came after a spell of dominance by Rovers but they couldn't find the net. Guest player Collier (York City) at half-back drove Thistle on with his surging runs. Rovers had lots of the play and a solid pen claim but Thistle saw it out.
Wed-24-Aug-1938 [a] (0-0) L0-3 Aberdeen (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Aberdeen hit the bar (1). Thistle made chances but Johnstone had some magnificent saves as well. Aberdeen controlled things in the second half and goals (47, 61 and 86) were a true reflection on the run of play as Thistle were pinned back. There were some good individual performances however.
Tue-24-Aug-1937 [h] (0-1) W4-3 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 3)
– McKennan was outstanding in this exciting match of fluctuating fortunes. Hamilton went 1-up (7) then hit the bar. Constant pressure wore them down however and goals 46, 52 and 59 made it 3-1 then Linton hit the bar. Hamilton scored (75) but McKennan got his 4th (85) and Hamilton scored (89).
Sat-24-Aug-1935 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 3)
– On one of the warmest days of the summer, Thistle were flattered by the narrow scoreline. Queens were better throughout (but lacked punch up front) and deservedly took the lead (21). A Hastie header skimmed the bar and McLennan went close with a drive. A late rally came to nothing.
Wed-24-Aug-1932 [a] (2-1) W2-1 Celtic (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Celtic scored (5) but a header from Torbet (15) tied things up then Boardman set up Dickson (17). Celtic fired a pen over the bar after half-time then claimed (in vain) an effort had crossed the line as Thistle defended stoutly. Tempers flared after the final whistle and police separated several players. Pitch invaded. Stones thrown.
Sat-24-Aug-1929 [h] (2-0) W4-0 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Ballantyne (18) and Grove just on half-time gave Thistle a merited 2-goal lead. 2 more goals from Simpson (63 and 88) rounded off a convincing win. “In Simpson, Partick Thistle have found a leader who, if not superlative, has the faculty of scoring goals“ (GH).
Tue-24-Aug-1920 [a] (1-1) D1-1 Clydebank FC (SFL - game 3)
– Thistle had only 2 chances in the first half but both were well saved. It was mostly Clydebank in control and they took the lead when a high shot gave Campbell no chance (30). Kinloch levelled with a lovely pass by Blair 5 minutes later. The second half was evenly contested although the best chances went to Clydebank.
Sat-24-Aug-1918 [h] (1-1) W3-1 Clydebank FC (SFL - game 2)
– Clydebank played the more skilful football but Thistle's “rushing style” (SC) finally won the day if not the plaudits. Marshall scored (25) from a scramble but a fine volley made it 1-1 (30) then Stewart turned away a pen for a corner just on half-time. Whittle's pen (75) then Marshall's header (78) were harsh on Clydebank.
Mon-24-Aug-1914 [h] (0-0) D2-2 Celtic (Partick Catholic School Fund Raiser)
– Played in aid of Partick RC schools. The nearest to a first half goal was when Celtic hit the post just on half-time. Branscombe finished off a fine move to give Thistle the lead (47) but Celtic equalised (57) then they took the lead. 2 minutes later a Branscombe shot cannoned off Junior trialist Somerville for 2-2.
Sat-24-Aug-1912 [h] (1-1) D1-1 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Motherwell just edged the first half but their forwards were shot-shy. Brilliant play by Callaghan led to the opener from Coham but a minute later Motherwell equalised. The second half was mainly Thistle as Motherwell fell out of the game but the forwards were very poor and wasted several chances.
Wed-24-Aug-1910 [h] (2-0) W4-1 Glasgow & District Police (Scottish Police FA Fundraiser)
– Fund raiser for Scottish Police Federation football team. A hat-trick by guest player Thomson was the highlight (close in from a Lowry pass and just before and after half-time). The police almost scored first but their only strike came after McArthur had scored with “a fine shot“ (GH).
Sat-24-Aug-1907 [a] (0-0) L0-1 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 2)
– This match was very much like Dundee v Howden. He had some brilliant saves to keep the score level at half-time. The winning goal came from a penalty (50, hand ball against Lyon). Normal service was then resumed and more excellent saves kept the margin of defeat down to one goal.
Sat-24-Aug-1901 [a] (0-0) D2-2 Abercorn (SFL Second Division - game 2)
– Abercorn took the lead in the second half but Thistle equalised through Cousar (a back-heel). Lamont “had a bout” (SC) with an Abercorn player and both were sent off then the home team went ahead but Muirhead equalised to share the points. “Thistle had a trying time in Paisley” (DC).
Sat-24-Aug-1895 [a] (4-1) W6-2 Renton (SFL Second Division - game 2)
– Thistle emphasised their superiority and went 4-up inside the first half-hour then Renton scored before half-time. The second half saw 2 more goals for Thistle in the first 10 minutes then Renton scored again. A one-sided match.
Sat-24-Aug-1889 [h] (0-1) L1-2 Cowlairs (Friendly)
– Thistle's first home game of the season ended in defeat largely because of a failure to take their chances. Cowlairs scored a goal in each half. Thistle's shooting was erratic but even so, the Cowlairs defence was in good form. (4 newspapers gave the score as 1-2. 3 papers reported 0-2.)
