matches (23rd August)

Sat-23-Aug-2025 [a] (1-0) W3-1 Ross County (SPFL Championship - game 3)
– The bar rescued Thistle early on but for more than a hour they played excellent attacking football. A magnificent 30-yarder by Stanway (28) and a long run and cross by Fitzpatrick via Watt was finished by Chalmers (48). A long throw-in led to some head tennis and a snap shot (66) but a strong finish saw Lawless tuck away a pen for handball (90+2).
Fri-23-Aug-2019 [a] (2-0) L2-3 Greenock Morton (SPFL Championship - game 3)
– A scrappy first half saw poor defending by Morton and Miller raced through to score from 18 yards (25) then De Vita finished off a good move from 12 yards (28). 3 goals in 8 minutes (a free-kick off the bar, Fox suspect, 72, and 2 headers 77 and 80) turned the match around. The last 20-minute collapse was unforgivable.
Sat-23-Aug-2014 [h] (0-0) L1-2 Hamilton Academical (SPFL Premiership - game 3)
– Sloppy central defending, nothing in midfield, Stevenson out of position took their toll. Both teams missed several 1-on-1s but a brilliant turn and top hand corner volley by Higginbotham (84) looked to be enough but 2 goals (86 and 92) by in-your-face Accies highlighted Thistle's defensive frailties.
Sat-23-Aug-2008 [h] (1-0) W4-0 St Johnstone (SFL First Division - game 4)
– A resounding win. Robertson hooked the ball home from a corner (6) but 1-0 at half-time was scant reward for Thistle's play. Maxwell scored (48) close in from a corner then a dipping shot by Paton (67) and Harkins from a corner (74) allowed Thistle to see time out comfortably, knocking the ball about with ease.
Tue-23-Aug-2005 [a] (1-2) L1-2 Falkirk (League Cup 2nd Round)
– Premier League Falkirk started the better and took the lead (10). Thistle levelled (22) through Gillies with a loose ball but found themselves behind a min later. In the second half Gillies saw his header cleared off the line, a Kilgannon chip had the same fate and Santala hit the bar. Falkirk were glad to hang on for the win.
Sat-23-Aug-2003 [h] (1-2) L1-2 Celtic (Scottish Premier League - game 3)
– A routine win for Celtic, aided by a dubious penalty decision (push by Ross). They went ahead (8) thanks to a Mikkelsen howler but Grady equalised (26) when Britton set him up for a poke in. The penalty made it 2-1 (44). Adventurous Thistle (playing 3-4-3) fought bravely but it wasn't enough.
Sat-23-Aug-1997 [a] (1-2) D2-2 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Ayr took the lead (2) but 2 minutes later a fine run by Lyons set up Hetherston for 1-1. It should have been 2-1 soon after but Thistle faded and Ayr scored (45). Trialist Caesar was hooked (48). Thistle had a lot of the ball in the second half but it took an exquisite chip by Adams (87) to take a point. Marginally hopeful.
Sat-23-Aug-1986 [h] (0-0) D1-1 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 4)
– A shaky first half saw Brough having to make some excellent saves as Queens enjoyed most of the pressure and chances. Their keeper dropped the ball at a corner and Kelly tapped in (46). Watson's header was disallowed for some unknown reason and deflated Thistle's defensive frailties surfaced. The leveller came (59).
Tue-23-Aug-1983 [a] (0-2) L1-2 Meadowbank Thistle (League Cup 2nd Round, 1st leg)
– A slip by Dunlop let in Meadowbank in just 40 secs. Thistle were seldom in the game and it was no surprise when they went 2-down from 15 yards when a cross deceived McNab. A fighting second half display brought only 1 goal when sub Docherty rounded the keeper (70). All to play for in the 2nd leg.
Sat-23-Aug-1980 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Kilmarnock (SFL Premier Division - game 3)
– With Marr and Anderson refusing to sign new contracts (or even temporary ones) and one (McLeod) walking out of the club, there was strife on and off the park. No-punch Thistle missed heaps of chances and Kilmarnock scored with their 1st serious attack (69) with a back-post header.
Wed-23-Aug-1978 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Heart of Midlothian (Anglo-Scottish Cup Preliminary Round, 2nd leg) agg: W3-2
– AGG: 3-2. A much better 2nd leg saw Thistle playing with 2 wingers. Rough had a magnificent one-handed save on the half hour. Houston had a shot cleared of the line then a magnificent 20-yard shot off the bar made it 1-0 (76). Extra time loomed large until Somner tamed a cross and smacked it home (89).
Sat-23-Aug-1975 [h] (1-0) W3-0 St Johnstone (League Cup Section 4 - game 5)
– Refreshingly open and skilful, Thistle disposed of a poor St Johnstone team. Somner clipped home a Hansen pass before half-time then a 40-yard pass by John Craig found Hansen (J) who shot past the out-rushing keeper (56). A miscued shot by John Craig found Somner's head in the dying minutes.
Wed-23-Aug-1972 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Morton (League Cup Section 1 - game 4)
– Another drab 0-0 draw against Morton who easily contained Thistle, confining play to midfield. As a result, both keepers had little to do. Thistle's best spell was the first 20 minutes but they made little impact. It was only when McQuade came on that Thistle looked like scoring but it wasn't to be.
Sat-23-Aug-1969 [a] (0-3) L0-6 Kilmarnock (League Cup Section 3 - game 5)
– Unchanged Thistle had no answer to Kilmarnock's fine play and goals rained in on Dick (15, 27, 38, 65, 70 and 82) but he had some fine saves despite the score. It might have been all so different had Glavin not wasted a good chance by shooting wide when he was set up by Gibson in the 1st few minutes.
Wed-23-Aug-1961 [a] (0-0) W3-1 Motherwell (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Motherwell's overall play deserved better but they couldn't take their chances. Brown cleared off the line twice. Thistle's tactics were at times “coarse” (GH) but they grabbed the opportunities that came their way. McBride scored (73), it was 1-1 (82) then McBride and Smith scored in the last 6 minutes for the win.
Sat-23-Aug-1958 [h] (1-1) W3-2 Dundee (League Cup Section 3 - game 4)
– There was some good play by both teams, then Dundee scored (36) but a fine header by Kerr (42) put Thistle back level. Wright took a pass from Kerr and smashed home a 20-yarder (50). Smith missed a good chance then Dundee equalised (67) but Kerr got the winner (75). Dundee hit the post late on. Good win.
Sat-23-Aug-1952 [a] (0-1) L1-3 Hibernian (League Cup Division A, Section A - game 4)
– Both regular full-backs were out injured but Thistle held their own until a soft penalty (40) gave Hibs the lead. Sharp made it 1-1 from close in (58) then Walker almost gave them the lead. Ledgerwood had 2 magnificent saves before Hibs scored (78). A shot from a rebounded penalty off Ledgerwood made it 3-1 (89).
Sat-23-Aug-1947 [a] (1-0) L1-2 Morton (League Cup Division A, Section B - game 3)
– Mathie scored (21) and Thistle were coasting even with McSpadyen limping from the 1st min. Morton levelled (85), Brown “scored“ (86) but the ref blew for an injury to the keeper while the ball was in flight. Poor marking led to the winner (89). Some Thistle players lost the plot with the ref the end.
Sat-23-Aug-1941 [a] (0-1) L1-4 Heart of Midlothian (Southern League - game 3)
– Thistle were caught cold several times. Hearts deservedly led at half-time and made it 2-0 with a move right from the start of the second half. Sharp (W) made it 2-1 (58) but Hearts scored immediately without a Thistle player touching the ball. Curran's late pen hit the post and the 4th came (70).
Wed-23-Aug-1933 [h] (0-3) L0-3 Celtic (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A bright start saw Mclean and Pritchard both hit the bar. Celtic turned on the skill and power after that and were too good for Thistle who trailed 3-0 at half-time. Thistle fought on but the forwards wasted some chances although the Celtic keeper saved a certain OG and an effort was cleared off the line.
Sat-23-Aug-1930 [h] (1-1) W2-1 Morton (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A thrilling match, especially in the first half which saw a goal apiece. Morton went ahead (9) but Thistle settled and Fraser scored from a fine Torbet pass (35). Morton levelled following a needlessly conceded corner by Jackson. Thistle took more of a grip in the second half and Simpson soon scored with a drive (40). Morton almost snatched an equaliser at the end.
Sat-23-Aug-1924 [h] (1-0) D1-1 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A fast, open game. Dundee's forwards were easy on the eye but lacked punch and Thistle took the lead when Hair turned in a Salisbury cross. More pressure from Thistle came to nothing and Dundee eventually equalised (68). Ramsay had some fine saves. A draw was the fairest result.
Tue-23-Aug-1921 [h] (1-3) D3-3 Clydebank FC (Arran War Memorial Fund Benefit)
– Arran war memorial fund-raiser. McLean gave Thistle an early lead (3) but they trailed 1-3 to a first half hat-trick. A good drive by McFarlane (J) reduced the lead (65) in a keenly fought second half and Gibson (J) scored just before the final whistle for the draw.
Sat-23-Aug-1919 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Albion Rovers (SFL - game 3)
– Broomfield, Airdrie. An embarrassing defeat (a goal in either half) against newcomers Albion Rovers (under-strength, missing 4 regulars). Thistle's forward line wasn't at full strength, but even so, the defence should have been able to cope. “All through the Coatbridge side were the cleverer team” (SC).
Sat-23-Aug-1913 [a] (3-2) L3-4 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 2)
– “A rare refreshing game” (AN). Branscombe hit the bar (1) then Falkirk ran up the park and scored but Harris (N) made it 1-1. Soon it was 2-1 but Harris again then Branscombe made it 3-2 at half-time. Campbell saved a penalty but Falkirk scored twice. Unlucky on the day to be edged out by the winner (87).
Sat-23-Aug-1902 [a] (0-4) L0-9 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 2)
– A day to forget. A bright opening soon faded and the game was effectively over early on when the score was 4-0. Rangers even had time to indulge in “pretty passing” (SC). Few players escaped criticism. “Partick Thistle completely lay down before their opponents” (DC). “Almost inexplicable” (AN).
Wed-23-Aug-1899 [h] (0-2) D2-2 Rangers (Friendly)
– Exchanges were even in this friendly but it was Rangers who went in 2-up at half-time. Thistle fought back and gained the upper hand and after McNicoll had hit the bar sustained pressure was rewarded with 2 goals (McNicoll and ex-Ranger McDougall) “and for a time Rangers were hard pressed” (GH).
Sat-23-Aug-1890 [h] (1-1) W4-2 Methlan Park (Friendly)
– In fine sunny weather Methlan Park took the lead but McLeod equalised (15). He scored again after the break then it was 3-0 after a goalmouth scrimmage. The visitors scored again but Gilchrist restored the 2-goal lead near the end. Thistle had the best of the play.
Sat-23-Aug-1884 [h] (2-2) W4-2 Morton (Friendly)
– “Before a large turnout…including a number of ladies” (GT). Thistle had Hamilton and Maitland of Rangers guesting and went 1-up (3) but it was 1-1 (7) and 2-2 at half-time. Morton had some good spells of pressure in the second half and were unlucky but it was Thistle who got the goals that mattered.
