Sat-22-Aug-2015 [a] (0-1) L0-3 Heart of Midlothian (SPFL Premiership - game 5)
– Hearts' 100% record was never in danger. A tap-in after a scramble at a corner (28) put Thistle behind. Cerny saved a pen but couldn't stop the rebound (69) and the defence was outpaced for the 3rd (71). Thistle had half the possession yet no shots on target. Absolutely nothing creative up front evident.
Sat-22-Aug-2009 [a] (0-0) L0-1 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Thistle dominated most of the first half, made chances but failed to take them. Queens only showed late on when they hit the post. The second half was more even and Tuffey was soon in action but Thistle hit back. They were denied by the Queens keeper then a cool finish (83) meant there was no way back.
Tue-22-Aug-2006 [a] (1-2) L2-3 Motherwell (League Cup 2nd Round)
– A dreadful start saw Motherwell go 2-up (6 and 16). A Gibson (J) free-kick wide on the left evaded everyone to make it 2-1 (25). After several chances Roberts shot home from the edge of the box (66). It could have gone either way until Motherwell's headed winner (87). But for the poor start…
Sat-22-Aug-1998 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Queen of the South (SFL Second Division - game 3)
– An open first half saw chances at both ends before Morgan scored with a pen (foul, 27). Poor defending let in Queens before half-time then they took the lead (51). A blunder by their keeper gifted Dunn the equaliser when he dropped the ball at his feet. He was also denied a late winner when he ran through but hit the post.
Sat-22-Aug-1992 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Motherwell (SFL Premier Division - game 5)
– Motherwell took the lead (32) with a stunning volley but Cameron's 20-yard equaliser (33) was just as good. The second half saw Shaw's low curling shot make it 2-1 (46). Motherwell levelled (78) when the ball was nodded in as Nelson failed to reach a through ball. A late 35-yarder from Irons went just over. A fine game.
Wed-22-Aug-1990 [a] (0-0) W*1-1 Falkirk (League Cup 2nd Round) aet; * W4-1 pens
– AET. Won 4-1 on pens. A bright opening saw Thistle in control with Duffy in excellent form then Duncan had a fine save and Robertson cleared off the line. Falkirk had a man sent off (50) yet took the lead direct from a corner but Peebles ran through to level (73). Falkirk hit the woodwork 4 times. Rae was red-carded in ET.
Sat-22-Aug-1987 [a] (1-0) W2-0 Clydebank (SFL First Division - game 4)
– Thistle had the better chances in the first half and deservedly went ahead with a diving header by Kelly (13). Lots of endeavour followed and Clydebank fought hard for the equaliser but when McGuire weaved his way past defenders and Logan scored with his cut-back (47), it made for a comfortable win.
Sat-22-Aug-1981 [a] (0-0) W1-0 Motherwell (League Cup Section 4 - game 5)
– Whittaker was booked early on then sent off just before half-time. Johnston was sacrificed at half-time for a defender (Lapsley). It all worked out well in the end however when O'Hara scored the only goal a minute into the second half. Thistle could even afford a missed penalty by Watson (87).
Wed-22-Aug-1973 [a] (0-1) L0-4 Dundee (League Cup Section 3 - game 4)
– Rae (T) and Gibson were in fine form early on but even so, Dundee scored (15) and it looked like a 1-0 defeat until Thistle collapsed in the last 20 mins. Goals in 71, 83 (when Rough was robbed as he waited for a pass-back) and 87 emphasised the gulf in class and experience. A tough debut for Hansen (A).
Sat-22-Aug-1970 [h] (0-1) D1-1 Stirling Albion (League Cup Section 5 - game 5)
– Thistle again struggled to contain Albion's lively forwards but 3 corners in the 1st few minutes came to nothing. A Bone header was cleared off the line then McQuade, Bone and Forsyth all went close. Bone hit the post but it was Albion who took the lead (63) before Coulston levelled (78) for a point.
Tue-22-Aug-1967 [a] (0-2) L0-5 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– “Uncertain in defence and pathetically inept in attack” (GH). Celtic, with several reserves playing, swept Thistle (with McParland still playing at centre-half) aside. Down 2-0 at half-time, the only excitement was when Rae hit the post. The second half was merely shooting practice. Completely outclassed.
Sat-22-Aug-1964 [h] (1-1) L1-5 Celtic (League Cup Section 3 - game 4)
– There was nothing between the teams until Celtic scored (22) but Duffy deservedly levelled from a Ewing pass (39). Hogan was carried off just on half-time and limped on the wing all of the second half. Disjointed and weakened, Thistle were rocked by three goals 48, 50 and 52. Hogan fired just over before Celtic scored (84).
Wed-22-Aug-1962 [a] (2-1) W2-1 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Pinned back in defence for the first 43 minutes by Kilmarnock (who scored, 23), 2 quick goals from Williamson (from a McParland cross, 44) and Duffy (benefiting from slack defending, 45) earned Thistle the points. Niven and Harvey were outstanding and a tight defence repelled Kilmarnock in the second half.
Mon-22-Aug-1960 [h] (2-0) W5-1 Queen's Park (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Queens were the better team and missed a good chance before their keeper was lost to a head injury (25). Nimmo scored almost immediately then Fletcher (probably off-side) made it 2-0 (38) while he was off. Poor defending let Nimmo in again (52). McParland scored twice with consolation for Queens coming at 4-0.
Sat-22-Aug-1959 [a] (0-1) L0-4 Airdrieonians (League Cup Section 1 - game 4)
– Thistle had 17 corners in this match but they flattered to deceive. Airdrie were by far the more clinical. A cross-cum shot (2) and a second half hat-trick (a solo effort, a header and a strong shot) ripped Thistle apart. Death of Davie Meiklejohn in the pavilion at Broomfield after the match.
Sat-22-Aug-1953 [a] (2-2) W3-2 Clyde (League Cup Division A, Section D - game 4)
– “Thistle Wright Happy!“ (ET). Clyde took the lead (28) but it was 1-1 two minutes later when Wright scored from close in from a pass by Sharp. Clyde scored from a soft pen (37) but Howitt steered home a MacKenzie pass (41). Wright got the winner (65) with a glorious diving header. “A dour contest“ (ET).
Wed-22-Aug-1951 [h] (0-1) L0-1 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– Thistle failed at the 1st attempt to defend the trophy. Thirds scored with a 25 yard free-kick (5), quickly taken as the wall being formed. Thistle had the bulk of the play after half-time and had Thirds pinned back but the forwards were not at their best. Stott and Walker went close but Thirds defended well and deserved to win.
Sat-22-Aug-1942 [h] (2-0) W2-1 Dumbarton (Southern League - game 3)
– Gourlay, back on leave from the forces, was a last-minute selection and his goals (15 and 44) earned the win - but it was lucky. Dumbarton had most of the play, were the better all-round team but lacked a punch up front. They hit the bar 3 times and scored with a pen (73) as tempers frayed.
Sat-22-Aug-1936 [h] (1-2) L2-3 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 4)
– With regulars Elliott and McLeod injured, weakened Thistle took the lead through McSpadyen (11) but Hamilton levelled (28) and went ahead on half-time. Wallace scored from 18 yards (79) to level but the lead lasted only a minute. Inexperience told in the end and Hamilton just deserved both points.
Wed-22-Aug-1934 [a] (1-3) L2-3 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 3)
– There were chances at both ends then Ayr scored twice (26 and 31). Thistle had been unlucky in front of goal but finally McLennan turned in a cross from Bain. Ayr then scored with a 20-yard free-kick (44). In the second half Miller scored from long range (47) but constant Thistle pressure was in vain.
Sat-22-Aug-1931 [a] (0-2) L1-3 Dundee United (SFL First Division - game 4)
– After a bright start by Thistle newly promoted United scored (17). A Torbet pen appeared to squirm over the line but Thistle's appeals fell on deaf ears. Play became ragged and it was 2-0 by half-time. A 3rd goal (70) killed the game off although Ness scored with a brilliant shot from out wide late on.
Sat-22-Aug-1925 [a] (1-0) D1-1 Morton (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Thistle dominated the first half which was characterised by some glaring misses. Miller finally atoned and gave Thistle the lead (39) but he went off injured (60). The ten men soldiered on and almost scored again but Morton got their equaliser (85) then Ramsay had a vital save to keep it at 1-1.
Sat-22-Aug-1914 [h] (3-0) W4-1 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 2)
– A comfortable win against a poor Dundee side. Goals by McTavish (2) and Branscombe made it 3-0 at half-time. Dundee pulled one back but Harris (J) restored the 3 goal lead. “They (Dundee) were outplayed and outpaced for nearly three-quarters of the game” (DC). For once, no failures. “Annihilated” (DET).
Sat-22-Aug-1908 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Rangers (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Ibrox. 13,000 saw Thistle take the game to a poor Rangers side early on and Kennedy hit the post with the keeper beaten. Rangers broke away and opened the scoring. It was mostly Rangers with the wind at their backs in the second half and they scored again (65). Some magnificent defending kept it at 2-0.
Tue-22-Aug-1905 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Port Glasgow Athletic (Lodge Vincent Masonic Fundraiser)
– Played in aid of Masonic Lodge funds. Thistle (with 2 “guest“ players) forced the pace from the start and McGregor shot straight into the keeper's arms. The forwards were poor despite the bulk of possession. Port seldom threatened and held out until Shand scored the only goal near the end.
Mon-22-Aug-1904 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Maryhill (Friendly)
– Playing a strong squad (but with some players out of position) Thistle “did not appear to take the game seriously” (DR). A goal in each half gave the Junior League Champions the win. Maryhill's amateur keeper (Duncan) guested and played a fine game, keeping the score down. “A positive disgrace” (DEP).
Sat-22-Aug-1903 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Port Glasgow Athletic (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Port had an early goal inexplicably ruled out then Thistle began to use roughhouse tactics. Port lost a man (35) courtesy of a “vicious charge“ (breaking an arm) (PGE). Wilkie had a fine save then Gray (R) headed over. While 2 Port players were receiving treatment Massie scored with blatant off-side in the build up.
Wed-22-Aug-1900 [h] (1-0) D1-1 Abercorn (Friendly)
– A low scoring but closely fought, entertaining match. Both teams made chances but it was Thistle who took the lead at half-time through Freebairn with a shot that deceived the keeper but Abercorn were never out of things and after a spell defending and several close things they got a deserved equaliser.
Sat-22-Aug-1896 [h] (1-0) D2-2 Morton (SFL Second Division - game 2)
– The first half was vigorously contested. Both teams had a goal disallowed but towards half-time Gilfillan gave Thistle the lead. Morton levelled after the break but Lawson restored Thistle lead only for Morton to equalise again. “Stubbornly contested” (GT).
Sat-22-Aug-1891 [h] (1-1) L1-2 Morton (Scottish Alliance - game 3)
– Play was even for a while then Keay opened for Thistle on the counter (20). Morton equalised (30) to make it 1-1 at half-time. Thistle had a good spell of pressure but it was Morton who scored from a disputed free-kick. Paul and Davies were prominent but Thistle couldn't find the equaliser their play deserved.
Sat-22-Aug-1885 [h] (1-1) D4-4 Abercorn (Friendly)
– First match at Inchview. An early goal by Abercorn was cancelled out 10 minutes later then off-side robbed the visitors of a half-time lead. Johnston scored just after half-time and a third was scored soon after. Back came Abercorn with 2 goals but Johnston scored again as did Abercorn approaching the final whistle.
