Sat-21-Aug-2021 [a] (1-1) L1-3 Arbroath (SPFL Championship - game 3)
– Good work by Turner led to an OG opener (33) but Stone was beaten with a free-kick at his near post (45). Thistle struggled against their tough, high-pressing opponents and a header (54) and a howler by Stone (passed the ball out to the scorer, 58) was deserved on play. A late "goal" deemed off-side was all Thistle could muster.
Sat-21-Aug-2010 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Greenock Morton (SFL First Division - game 3)
– 2 poor sides. Morton took the lead (18) when a deflected clearance fell kindly for them. A few half chances came Thistle's way but it was Morton who scored (87) when a poor free-kick was deflected off the wall and Halliwell was adjudged to have retrieved it from over the line. “A horrible game” (McCall).
Sat-21-Aug-2004 [a] (1-0) W1-0 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 3)
– The only goal came from Escalas when he controlled the ball and shot home an Anis cross (31). Chances to extend the lead were missed after the break and it was almost thrown away when Anis gave away a needless corner late on but he cleared the resultant shot off the line. A narrow but deserved win.
Tue-21-Aug-2001 [a] (0-0) L0-1 Clyde (Challenge Cup Quarter Final)
– Clyde committed 8 fouls in the first 7 minutes and had 5 players booked. Thistle found it impossible to get any passing going. Clyde scored from one of the 3 chances they made all night (58). Hardie was sent off following “an incident“ with a Clyde player (63) and a late rally came to nothing. Horrible.
Sat-21-Aug-1999 [h] (1-1) L1-3 Arbroath (SFL Second Division - game 3)
– Craig hit the bar then Dunn scored (27) having been set up after Docherty's fine run to finally give the fans a goal but cheers became boos when league leaders Arbroath scored within a minute then ex-Manager Bryce came back to haunt the club with a magnificent lob just after half-time. The 3rd came from a header (78)
Sat-21-Aug-1993 [a] (1-1) D2-2 Raith Rovers (SFL Premier Division - game 3)
– Slack defending led to Raith's opening goal (power header from a free-kick, 27) but Britton shot home rather against the run of play (34). Grant rattled the woodwork just on half-time but he scored with a crisp volley (53). Tierney gave away a pen to make it 2-2 (60). It was an entertaining game and a fair result.
Wed-21-Aug-1985 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Motherwell (League Cup 2nd Round)
– Thistle started cautiously and Watson was badly injured (out until November). They opened up and played some fine football. Typically, they fell behind just before half-time (a header from a corner by future-JAG Kennedy). They matched Premier League Motherwell but one piece of slack marking cost them and they lacked a finish.
Tue-21-Aug-1984 [a] (0-2) L0-3 Cowdenbeath (League Cup 2nd Round)
– “Thistle are trounced by stuffy Cowdenbeath” (GH). The Fifers dominated from the start and took the lead (13) from close range. A mix-up between Brough and Walker led to the 2nd goal (37) and Brough was rounded for the 3rd (53). A desperately poor performance against Second Division opposition.
Sat-21-Aug-1982 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Brechin City (League Cup Section 7 - game 3)
– A spirited start by Brechin came to nothing then Thistle went close when McDowall's header was brilliantly saved. Brechin went inches wide with a header. Thistle had most of the play and McDowall wasted a good chance but Murray was sent off for hand ball (2nd yellow) and Thistle had to settle for a draw.
Sat-21-Aug-1976 [a] (1-0) W2-0 Dundee (League Cup Section 1 - game 3)
– Dundee had all the early pressure but it was Thistle who went ahead when a Mackie cross was deflected past the keeper for an OG (26). Joe Craig had the ball in the net soon after but an infringement ruled it out but when he was brought down in the box, Hansen (A) converted the pen (59).
Wed-21-Aug-1974 [h] (2-0) W3-1 Clyde (League Cup Section 1 - game 4)
– Gray headed in a Coulston cross (9) then he doubled the lead (27) when he tapped in a Craig header that came off the bar. A magnificent goal by McQuade when he beat 3 men and shot from 18 yards made it 3-0. Sub Gibson almost scored with his 2nd touch. Clyde's goal came 5 minutes from time.
Sat-21-Aug-1971 [a] (0-1) D1-1 Raith Rovers (League Cup Section 7 - game 3)
– It took Thistle about 20 minutes to get their first shot on target. By that time Rovers had had the better start and had gone close with a shot that went just wide. On the half hour mark Thistle went 1-down when slack marking left the Rovers' No 8 in the clear to take a pass and shoot past Rough. In the second half things improved when Lawrie and McQuade switched wings. Coulston got Thistle's equaliser 15 minutes from the end.
Sat-21-Aug-1965 [h] (0-1) L0-1 St Johnstone (League Cup Section 3 - game 3)
– Thistle drew another blank. They had lots of pressure but could make no headway against St Johnstone's back line. The attack was “a collection of misfits“ (GH). A shot from close in following a corner (9) earned the points and to rub salt in the wound, the win was master-minded by ex-JAG Duffy. Rae “scored“ (85) but the ref spotted an infringement.
Wed-21-Aug-1963 [h] (0-1) D1-1 Aberdeen (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Aberdeen were the better team from the start but it was 20 minutes before they scored with a 25-yard shot. They lost their No 5 (46) during a scramble when 3 shots were cleared off their line in 5 seconds. The 10 men hung on gamely until their goalkeeper dropped a cross and Duffy knocked it in (78). A lucky point.
Sat-21-Aug-1954 [a] (1-0) W2-0 Stirling Albion (League Cup Division A, Section C - game 3)
– Albion were lively early on but made little impression and Thistle gradually had them on the defensive. Crowe and Henderson went close but only a Davidson pen (45) separated the teams at half-time. Crowe saw his drive blocked by the keeper but Smith tapped in the rebound before he could recover (54).
Mon-21-Aug-1950 [a] (1-2) D2-2 Third Lanark (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final)
– The best player afield was Thirds' international No 8 Mason who ran the show as Thirds went 2-up. Walker's header made it 2-1 at half-time. Brown (at outside-right) was clearly unfit and Thistle struggled but Thirds gradually tired. A glorious save denied Walker before an OG from a Brown cross (87) earned them a replay.
Sat-21-Aug-1948 [h] (1-2) W3-2 Clyde (SFL Division A - game 3)
– “Thistle's victory surge” (SP). Clyde went 2-up (13 and 27) but Walker reduced the deficit before half-time. With McGowan limping on the wing the second half fight-back was remarkable. A Wright pen (67) then an unstoppable Brown 40-yard drive (77) made it 3-2. Kinnell and Walker both hit the post.
Wed-21-Aug-1946 [h] (4-0) W4-0 Queen's Park (SFL Division A - game 4)
– 4 goals between 30 and 39 minutes by Chisholm (2), Sharp then Brown (from 30 yards) did the damage and delighted the crowd. Brown, Parker and Husband were once again in excellent form as Thistle (after a stodgy half hour) swept Queens aside. “The most promising team Firhill has seen in years” (GH).
Sat-21-Aug-1943 [h] (0-0) D2-2 Hamilton Academical (Southern League - game 2)
– An excellent game. Thistle lost McGowan with a knee injury at half-time but Thistle managed to take a 2-goal lead through Newall (62 and 78). Hamilton finished the stronger however and scored twice in the last 10 minutes to share the points against the 10 men. Curran missed a penalty but otherwise played well.
Sat-21-Aug-1937 [h] (2-0) W3-0 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Despite the score, a close game in which Thistle carried all the luck whereas Kilmarnock hit the woodwork twice. Wallace headed in a Linton cross (17) and McMenemy made it 2-0 (41). The second half was just as tight. Linton deceived the keeper from a tight angle (making no attempt to save, 82).
Sat-21-Aug-1926 [h] (3-1) L4-5 Morton (SFL First Division - game 2)
– 12,000 saw Thistle score through Hair (20) but Morton equalised (35). Gibson scored from a corner and the lead was extended to 3-1 by half-time (Torbet). Hair scored again (60) but Morton scored 4 goals - 2 of them due to poor defending - to shock Thistle and test the resolve of their fans.
Tue-21-Aug-1923 [h] (1-0) W1-0 Nithsdale Wanderers (Friendly)
– Play was sedate and friendly in this match arranged as part of the Ness transfer deal. Thistle had 2 ex-Wanderers in the team (Ness and Crichton). The non-league side gave a good account of themselves but Ferguson thwarted their efforts. A goal by Carlow made the difference but a draw would have been fairer.
Sat-21-Aug-1920 [a] (0-2) L1-2 Ayr United (SFL - game 2)
– Thistle were all over the place and were 2-down inside 7 mins. They wasted several chances following defensive errors by Ayr but a much better second half saw McFarlane pull one back when the keeper fumbled a Blair shot (47). The game got rough after that and several punches were thrown. On play, unlucky.
Thu-21-Aug-1919 [a] (0-2) L1-3 Rangers (Willie Reid Benefit)
– A team consisting largely of reserves was no match for Rangers in this benefit match for W Reid. Lucky to be only 2-0 down at half-time, Murray in his only game for the club scored a fine goal in a rare Thistle attack but Rangers' centre-forward completed his hat-trick before the finish. “Tame” (GH).
Sat-21-Aug-1915 [h] (3-1) W3-2 Morton (SFL - game 1)
– 3 new signings Honeyman, Bowie and Leitch made their debuts. It couldn't have been a better start to the season for the bulk of the 9,000 crowd as Whittle scored a 10-minute hat-trick (the 3rd, a penalty) and it was a flattering 3-1 lead at half-time. Morton rallied strongly and scored thanks to an error by Campbell.
Mon-21-Aug-1911 [a] (1-0) D2-2 Royal Albert (Benefit)
– Hamilton gave Thistle the lead after a minute and that's how it stayed until half-time. The “Royals“ scored twice in the second half. The timing and scorer of Thistle's 2nd goal is unknown. New signings Curtis (Benburb) and Coham (Southampton) got their first starts. The home keeper dislocated his shoulder late on.
Tue-21-Aug-1906 [a] (2-0) D2-2 Renton (Tontine Park New Pavilion Fundraiser)
– This friendly was in aid of Renton's “Pavilion Fund“. 3,000 saw Wilkie and Gray (R) give Thistle (pretty much at full strength) a half-time lead. The home team scored with a penalty and their equaliser came 15 minutes from time. Thistle missed a pen in the second half.
Thu-21-Aug-1902 [a] (1-0) W2-0 Queen's Park (Ibrox Disaster Tournament 1st Round)
– Ibrox disaster tournament. A surprisingly good game. Goals 1 and 85 gave Thistle the win. Muirhead got one and the other was an og. In between the goals there was little between the teams and Queens performed well. They caused Thistle problems but they were unable to breach a solid defence.
Sat-21-Aug-1886 [h] (2-0) W4-0 Cowlairs (Friendly)
– The weather was “all that could be desired“ (GEP) for the new season. Young set up Robertson for a dribble and shot for 1-0 (8) and a strong shot by Johnston made it 2-0 (45), the Cowlairs keeper looking none too clever. [Complete report not found.]
Sat-21-Aug-1880 [a] (?-?) L0-2 Pollok FC (Friendly)
– Summer 1880…SFA membership confirmed. To open the new grounds at Cowglen…“ after a splendid game on both sides, the Thistle received a defeat at the hands of the Pollock by two goals to nothing“.
