Fri-19-Aug-2022 [h] (2-0) W4-1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle (SPFL Championship - game 4)
– A fine win spoiled only by an unmarked header at a corner (92). Graham tucked away a McKinnon pass along the 6-yard line (21) and Tiffoney pounced on a poor pass and left it for Graham (35). A soft pen was converted by Holt (59) and a glorious diving glancing header by Dowds from a Milne cross (84) made for a convincing win.
Sat-19-Aug-2017 [a] (0-1) L0-1 St Johnstone (SPFL Premiership - game 3)
– The only decent pass in a scrappy first half split the defence for the winner (33). Keown stung the keeper's hands from 40 yards in the second half and there were a few half chances for both teams but although Thistle were best in the last 20 mins, high balls into the box proved fruitless. Nothing creative in midfield.
Sat-19-Aug-2006 [a] (1-0) D2-2 Livingston (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A brisk start saw Thistle take the lead with a Roberts header following a corner. They survived some Livingston close shaves before the equaliser (79). Roberts scored from a Donnelly pass (80). Ferguson went close but Livingston equalised (87) and having led twice, Thistle had to settle for a point.
Sat-19-Aug-2000 [a] (0-3) L0-4 Stenhousemuir (SFL Second Division - game 3)
– An incredible match. The home goalkeeper was man of the match! Thistle hit post four times (and the bar once). Stenhousemuir had 2 shots and scored (32 and 34) and were 3-up at half-time. Archibald was red-carded before the 4th (77). Shocking defending admittedly but absolutely no luck up front.
Sat-19-Aug-1995 [a] (2-0) W7-0 Berwick Rangers (League Cup 2nd Round)
– Lambie resigned. Murdo Macleod was appointed in July. Craig (16 & 77), McWilliams (34 & 61), McDonald (volley, 52), Pittman (free-kick, 58), and Curran (lob, 81) got the goals for an easy win against a young Berwick side who were out of their depth.
Wed-19-Aug-1992 [a] (2-2) L*2-2 St Johnstone (League Cup 3rd Round) aet; * L3-4 pens
– AET. Lost 3-4 on pens. Saints raced to a 2-goal lead (pen, 5) and following a free-kick (a handled 50:50 ball deemed a pass-back). A close-range header by Britton then Shaw from close in made it 2-2 just before half-time. Thistle had a good second half but Britton missed a pen (112) so it was on to penalties and defeat.
Sat-19-Aug-1989 [h] (2-0) W4-0 Albion Rovers (SFL First Division - game 2)
– The Thistle were unimpressive against newly promoted Rovers until McCoy scored (24) when the keeper fumbled a Kerr drive. He swept home the 2nd (44) but Thistle were flattered by 2-0. They dominated the second half and Campbell scored (46) then McCoy completed his hat-trick (76). Rovers had a man sent off (78).
Wed-19-Aug-1987 [a] (0-0) L1-4 Dundee United (League Cup 2nd Round)
– The score flattered United. Solid defensive work with the odd counter-attack was the order of the day until the 1st goal (53). Thistle became more adventurous and after a 2nd goal (72) Mitchell reduced the lead from close in (77) but tired legs and inexperience combined to let in United (82 and 89) for a cruel margin.
Wed-19-Aug-1981 [h] (0-2) L1-2 Dundee United (League Cup Section 4 - game 4)
– Only 1,760 fans saw United's comfortable win. Gibson and Park were dropped. Clark went close early on but once United took the lead (10) the result was never in doubt. A short pass-back by Lapsley almost made it 2-0 (22) but a header did (38). A cracking left-foot drive by Johnston (on his debut, 87) meant little.
Sat-19-Aug-1978 [h] (0-1) D1-1 Dundee United (SFL Premier Division - game 2)
– United took the lead (8) and walked all over Thistle but astonishingly it was only 1-0 at half-time. Both subs came on and there was a complete transformation and the unmarked Houston headed in a Whittaker cross (73). Melrose and Somner had earlier gone close but a win would have been a travesty. 3rd top!
Sat-19-Aug-1972 [a] (1-0) W2-0 Stranraer (League Cup Section 1 - game 3)
– Stranraer proved to be a handful in this open, entertaining game. Forsyth then Coulston went close then a brilliant save denied McQuade. Rae (T) scored from close in (38). Stranraer had their best spell in the second half and Rough was a busy man but Glavin scored (68) to ease the pressure.
Wed-19-Aug-1970 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Queen of the South (League Cup Section 5 - game 4)
– Rough saved Thistle from defeat with a string of marvellous saves. There were no goals but there was no shortage of incidents. Thistle were soon under pressure and Queens hit the post twice. Gibson fired just wide but there were few chances for Thistle. Queens took all the honours.
Sat-19-Aug-1967 [a] (0-2) L0-4 Kilmarnock (League Cup Section 1 - game 3)
– Thistle were seldom seen in attack as Kilmarnock dominated. Niven was at his best but had to admit defeat (21 and 44). Kilmarnock's keeper had his 1st saves after the break as Thistle got into the game and Flanagan went close then wasted a good chance but 2 more goals (65 and 69) made it an easy win.
Wed-19-Aug-1964 [a] (1-0) W2-1 Dundee United (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Unbeaten United played the neater football but Thistle were stronger and defended better. Hainey gave them the lead from 12 yards (15). United equalised (poor marking) after half-time but Hainey scored again after good work by Duffy. United attacked for the last 20 minutes and Niven had 3 magnificent saves.
Sat-19-Aug-1961 [h] (0-0) D0-0 St Johnstone (League Cup Section 1 - game 3)
– “No sting in this Thistle“. “Shooting seemed a lost art“ (ET). Saints had 4 corners in the first 10 mins. A mazy run by McParland saw Duffy miss from 2 yards. He hit the bar and Freebairn had some dodgy moments. Defenders rescued him several times. The clean sheet was welcome, but there were no goals. Debutant Hainey got no support.
Wed-19-Aug-1959 [h] (2-0) W2-0 Arbroath (SFL First Division - game 1)
– “Off-side orgy at Firhill. This indeed was pathetic poverty of football“ (GH). 26 off-side decisions, 22 other free-kicks and numerous throw-ins left little room for actual football. A Donlevy pen (20) and a Wilson goal after a stramash in front of goal (25) earned the win. Arbroath were denied a blatant pen late on.
Sat-19-Aug-1950 [a] (1-0) L1-2 Motherwell (League Cup Division A, Section C - game 3)
– Thistle scored (32) when Stott's low cross was met by Walker who scored at the 2nd attempt. They faded badly however and Motherwell were transformed. They levelled (49) then went ahead (64) at which point McCredie was injured and limped badly on the wing unable to kick the ball.
Sat-19-Aug-1944 [a] (1-0) L1-4 Dumbarton (Southern League - game 2)
– Much changed - but strengthened along familiar lines - Thistle were the better team in the first half and a goal by Sharp (6) gave them a half-time lead. The second half saw a complete transformation as Thistle fell away and Dumbarton dominated and scored 48, 52, 55 and 78 to leave Thistle wondering where it all went wrong.
Wed-19-Aug-1936 [a] (2-2) D3-3 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Queens hit the post (1) and scored (2 and 30). Wallace then McKennan scored in the last 3 minutes of the first half then McKennan gave Thistle the lead (65) against the run of play. Queens got their deserved equaliser with a long-range drive (80). After that it could have gone either way but it ended 3-3.
Sat-19-Aug-1933 [h] (1-2) L2-3 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Pritchard headed the opener (6) but Kilmarnock, playing some fine football, scored twice (15 and 25). Ballantyne scored from the spot (52) and Thistle dominated for a spell then it could have gone either way. Poor finishing and bad luck combined and Kilmarnock got the winner (85). Unlucky.
Wed-19-Aug-1931 [a] (0-0) W3-0 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A fine Wednesday night win at Broomfield. 3 brilliant saves by Jackson ensured the first half was goalless. Thistle were the better team in the second half and Morrison made up for earlier misses by scoring twice (53 and 68), taking his tally to 4 in 3 games. Ness also scored (82) to record a fine win.
Tue-19-Aug-1930 [h] (1-1) D1-1 Rangers (Davie Ness Testimonial)
– Davie Ness testimonial. The weather took its toll and between 1500 and 2000 turned up to see Thistle go 1-up through Simpson with a header from a Torbet pass (15). Rangers (well below full-strength) levelled (22) with a deflected shot following a corner. Both goalkeepers excelled themselves in the second half. A tame draw.
Tue-19-Aug-1924 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Celtic (SFL First Division - game 2)
– 15,500 saw a fast and entertaining game. Celtic took the lead with a pen (30) but Kinloch equalised (33) after some fine play. In the second half Ramsay had a brilliant save early on but he was beaten from close in (73). After a fine individual run Hair burst through and scored the deserved equaliser (81).
Sat-19-Aug-1922 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Hibernian (SFL First Division - game 1)
– “A good hard game rather than a brilliant one” (SC). Play was fast and open and both keepers were tested early on. A single goal (from a cross, 25) separated the teams. Kinloch went close twice and although Hibs had the bulk of pressure Thistle (with 3 new forwards playing) were dangerous on the break.
Thu-19-Aug-1920 [h] (1-0) W1-0 Dumbarton (SFL - game 1)
– Interest centred on Kinloch (QP) and McMenemy (Celtic) making their debuts. The forwards were wayward at first but soon settled. Campbell was almost caught napping before McMenemy set up Kinloch with a delightful through ball (22). It was all Thistle after that but there were no more goals.
Tue-19-Aug-1919 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Third Lanark (SFL - game 2)
– The game was “practically…devoid of interest” (GH). Neither keeper had anything serious to deal with and play was largely confined to midfield. Things only came to life in the last 10 minutes but even then poor forward play saw Thirds miss twice with only Bernard to beat. A poor game ended in a fair result.
Sat-19-Aug-1916 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Aberdeen (SFL - game 1)
– Unlucky Thistle were the better team. Their forwards had more method and Honeyman and McTavish were the best of the 10 on view. Aberdeen scored against the run of play (30). Honeyman's shot ran along the crossbar and 3 Thistle players missed the open goal. Harris' mistake led to No 2 late on.
Sat-19-Aug-1911 [h] (0-0) D0-0 St Mirren (SFL First Division - game 2)
– A fast and exciting game which was mostly end to end stuff. Defences were on top however and the forwards had few chances. The Saints' keeper was outstanding. Raisbeck missed a penalty in the second half. Campbell had to look lively when Bulloch made a mess of a clearance in front of him. A fair result.
Sat-19-Aug-1905 [a] (1-0) W1-0 Aberdeen (SFL First Division - game 1)
– This was Aberdeen's first ever top flight league match. A brilliant 30-yard shot by Kennedy with the keeper unsighted was enough to take the points. Aberdeen lost a player towards the end and were a little unlucky on their big day. They were the better team in the second half but their forwards were erratic.
Tue-19-Aug-1902 [h] (3-0) W4-0 Third Lanark (Friendly)
– Play was even for a short time then Thistle got on top. Goals by Lindsay (10) and Law gave Thistle a half-time lead. Thirds came more into the game after the beak and had a few chances but Thistle scored two more through Edwards and Brownlie. Neither team was at full strength. Play was “listless” (SC).
Sat-19-Aug-1899 [a] (1-1) W3-1 Motherwell (SFL Second Division - game 1)
– The game was held up for 45 minutes because 5 Motherwell players missed their train. Play was even and 1-1 at half-time (McNicol, 35) was a fair reflection. After the break “the visitors…by good combination gave the home defence a trying time” (GH) and Proudfoot and Freebairn scored. Thistle also missed a penalty.
Mon-19-Aug-1895 [a] (0-2) L1-5 Rangers (J. Black Benefit)
– Fund raiser for widow of prominent Rangers supporter. “Rangers had the best of the exchanges throughout and their superior tactics accounted for the margin of four goals in their favour“ (SR). 2 x 35 minutes were played.
Sat-19-Aug-1893 [a] (3-0) W3-2 Morton (SFL Second Division - game 1)
– Thistle's first ever SFL match (New Div 2 created). After a close shave (1), Thistle went 2-up in 10 minutes, Paul getting both. Crozier had a fine save and it was 3-0 at half-time thanks to Robertson (H). Morton improved but could only score twice - Crozier outstanding as Morton pressed.
Sat-19-Aug-1882 [a] (2-0) W3-1 Morton (Friendly)
– In delightful weather, Thistle (with wind and sun at their backs) had Morton on the back foot from early on and took 2-goal lead into the second half, Morton having had a goal ruled out for off-side. They were more determined after half-time and pulled a goal back but Thistle coped admirably and scored a third for a comfortable win.
