Sat-17-Aug-2019 [h] (0-0) W3-2 Ross County (League Cup 2nd Round) aet
– AET. A county defender headed against his own bar. Gordon cleared off the line. Nothing much else happened until ex-JAG Spittal fired home (60) but Miller finished off a Jones cut-back (80). Penrice's low curling free-kick (96) was cancelled out (105) then Saunders scored from a corner (114). A rousing performance.
Sun-17-Aug-2008 [a] (0-2) L0-2 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 3)
– After 2 unimpressive performances, the bubble burst. A penalty (foul, 24) and a shot into the corner of the net (34) gave Queens their win. Thistle hit the bar 3 times and the home keeper was their man of the match. They deserved better and they were given an ovation at the end by the travelling Thistle fans.
Sat-17-Aug-2002 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Livingston (Scottish Premier League - game 3)
– A towsy first half saw Livingston take the lead (31) but Mitchell equalised soon after when he knocked in a deep corner headed back across goal. The second half wasn't pretty either. Burns was hauled down an Mitchell scored from the spot (64) but Livingston scored (75) and might have stolen another (90).
Sat-17-Aug-1996 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Thistle failed to capitalise on a shaky performance by the Dundee keeper and Lyons missed good chances either side of half-time. They had the best of the chances but Cairns had some fine saves too. In the Dundee side, ex-JAG Charnley was largely anonymous and he was upstaged by Turner. 0-0 says it all.
Sat-17-Aug-1991 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 3)
– A forgettable shambolic first half from both teams but it improved after the break. McGlashan latched on to a huge clearance from Murdoch to slide the ball past the keeper (51). A double save denied Kilmarnock an equaliser then Irons and McGlashan went closest to adding to the lead.
Sat-17-Aug-1985 [a] (1-0) W2-1 Dumbarton (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Dumbarton, also relegated from the Prem Div, had the early pressure but when a corner was headed on Logan scored from 4 yards (12). Thistle were lucky to survive sustained pressure and ex-JAG McCoy levelled (64) but a much-remembered 35-yard screamer by Law earned the points.
Sat-17-Aug-1974 [h] (1-1) L1-2 Dumbarton (League Cup Section 1 - game 3)
– It was all Thistle and an almighty scramble in front of goal saw Coulston poke the ball home (20). Chances were missed then Dumbarton equalised on the stroke of half-time. It was much more even in the second half and the winner came from a header from a free-kick (80). All 4 teams in the section had 3 points.
Sat-17-Aug-1968 [a] (0-3) L0-4 Celtic (League Cup Section 4 - game 3)
– It only took Celtic 6 minutes to open the scoring then Coulston and Cunningham went close. However, Ritchie was soon back in action and Wallace completed his hat-trick (29 and 43). He got his 4th (74) to complete the scoring. Thistle were never in the game once the Celtic machine steam-rollered them.
Wed-17-Aug-1966 [h] (0-1) L0-3 Dunfermline Athletic (League Cup Section 3 - game 2)
– Unchanged Thistle struggled against a far superior Dunfermline side. A goal (13) from a needlessly conceded corner put them ahead. A spell of pressure before half-time came to nothing and when McParland missed from 8 yards (46) the writing was on the wall. Ex-JAG Fleming made it 2-0 (61) and a 3rd came (83).
Sat-17-Aug-1963 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Heart of Midlothian (League Cup Section 1 - game 3)
– A towsy match but there was some fine play by both teams. Hearts scored (35 secs) then Cunningham went close before Brown smashed in a shot from 40 yards for 1-1. Thistle kicked off the second half, moved up field and Hainey scored (46) but Hearts equalised (75). After that it was end to end stuff.
Wed-17-Aug-1960 [h] (0-0) D1-1 Celtic (League Cup Section 2 - game 2)
– A poor first half ended 0-0 because defences were on top. Thistle scored (55) when Smith dribbled round the keeper and scored. Celtic switched their forwards and scored from a scramble (80). McParland and Smith went close in an end to end finish. Both keepers had some fine saves. “Game of blunders” (GH).
Sat-17-Aug-1957 [a] (0-1) L0-1 St Mirren (League Cup Section 2 - game 3)
– A penalty (1) when Ledgerwood pulled down a St Mirren player trying to reach a pass back settled this game. There was little in the way of good football but lots of goalmouth action. Unchanged Thistle had bad luck in front of goals and Ewing hit the keeper's legs. No lack of effort but another goalless defeat.
Wed-17-Aug-1955 [a] (3-0) W3-2 East Fife (League Cup Section 2 - game 2)
– Unchanged Thistle opened against the run of play when Wright scored with a low shot (10). MacKenzie doubled the lead (29) then a defensive blunder let in Wright again (32). The Fifers went close 3 times before half-time. It was 3-1 (55), Thistle survived a pen scare, and were lucky to concede only once more (85).
Wed-17-Aug-1949 [a] (1-0) W2-1 Clyde (League Cup Division A, Section C - game 2)
– An exciting match. Wright shot narrowly over then Howitt caught the Clyde keeper by surprise with a high shot (25). Clyde rallied and Henderson had some fine saves. Walker had a shot headed off the line then Clyde made it 1-1 (57). Walker scored with a Sharp pass (87) then Clyde almost levelled at the death.
Sat-17-Aug-1946 [a] (1-1) W4-3 Morton (SFL Division A - game 3)
– A cracker! A diving header (14), a McInnes header (30), a Sharp penalty (49) and McInnes' header made it 3-1 (63). Morton scored from the spot (hand ball, 75) then equalised (83). O'Donnell pounced on a bouncing ball in the box and lobbed the advancing keeper (89). 12 goals in 3 games! “A soccer banquet” (SP).
Sat-17-Aug-1940 [a] (0-2) L1-3 Hamilton Academical (Southern League - game 2)
– Thistle were a “jerky and colourless lot” (DR). Apart from a late rally when Peat scored for 3-1, they were well beaten. They went behind early in the first half and a brilliant solo effort, leaving half the defence floundering, made it 2-0. “Never thoroughly interesting but..never really boring”.
Sat-17-Aug-1935 [h] (2-1) W3-1 St Johnstone (SFL First Division - game 2)
– A Regan cross set McLennan up (17) then a surging run by McLeod played him in (18). St Johnstone played some good football after that but their forwards wasted chances and their left-half scored with a 25-yard drive (35). Trickery by McSpadyen set up McLennan for his hat-trick (81).
Sat-17-Aug-1929 [a] (0-1) W4-2 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 2)
– A fast open game with both keepers busy from the start. Thistle trailed 2-0 (goals, 35 and 53) but Grove scored to reduce the lead then a hat-trick by Simpson as he began an 8-week goal spree. He turned the game round completely as Thistle finally exploited gaps in the Ayr defence.
Wed-17-Aug-1927 [a] (0-0) L0-1 King's Park (Stirling Charity Cup Final)
– “Vigorously contested“ (SO). King's Park coped well with Thistle's strong forward play. They were never out of things and had their share of attacks and chances. A well constructed move down the left involving neat interpassing and a tidy finish won the cup (68). 2x35 minutes were played. Future-JAG Rae missed a first half penalty for KP.
Tue-17-Aug-1926 [a] (0-0) L0-1 King's Park (Stirling Charity Cup Final)
– Thistle had the edge for the first 15 minutes but found the home defence a tough proposition. KP got into the game and hit the post. A clearance off the line denied Thistle the opener just on half-time. A drive (67) won the cup. Gibbs got his fingers to the shot but couldn't keep it out. Earlier, Torbet had missed a penalty.
Mon-17-Aug-1925 [a] (0-2) W6-4 Hibernian (William McGinnigle Benefit)
– Benefit match for Hibs' McGinnigle. A fine, if bizarre, game Full-strength Hibs led 2-0 at half-time and 4-0 (55) but Thistle (showing 6 changes) scored 4 goals in 7 minutes (and all 6 in 17) to completely turn the game around. Hair (3), Miller (2) and Lindsay got the goals as Hibs shipped 11 goals in 2 games.
Sat-17-Aug-1918 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Airdrieonians (SFL - game 1)
– New keeper Stewart, right-back McQueen, inside-right Lauder and outside-left Salisbury all made their debuts. Both keepers were busy but once again future-JAG Bernard was the hero. Airdrie took the lead well into the second half but Marshall equalised from a corner. Airdrie hit the bar but overall a draw was fair.
Sat-17-Aug-1912 [a] (0-2) L1-2 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Showing only a few new faces, Thistle were 1-down 5 minutes into the new league season. An individual effort by the same player, beating 3 men in the process, followed before half-time. The unmarked Callaghan scored with an oblique shot but Thistle left it far too late to start playing. A draw would possibly have been fairer.
Wed-17-Aug-1910 [h] (0-0) W2-1 Third Lanark (Friendly)
– Inability of both sets of forwards to take their chances was evident. Branscombe saw his penalty saved (shot straight at the keeper). In the second half Gardiner missed a sitter, but he scored from a Branscombe cross then Alan added a 2nd from close in (80) before he hit the bar. Thirds scored (90).
Sat-17-Aug-1907 [h] (1-0) D2-2 Morton (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Thistle had most of the play but it took until near half-time to make a breakthrough (McGregor). Morton played without their injured No 4 in the second half but didn't seem unduly handicapped. They equalised then Ferguson restored the lead late on only for Morton to convert a pen (90). “A well-contested game” (SC).
Wed-17-Aug-1904 [h] (2-0) W2-0 Motherwell (Friendly)
– The game was an even, open affair but with Thistle's forwards “combining splendidly“ (GH) they always looked to have that bit more to offer. Off-side cancelled out a Motherwell goal then Curran scored from a corner (35) then Gray made it 2-0 8 minutes before half-time. After half-time Motherwell defended stoutly. They fielded 8 new players, Thistle had one.
Sat-17-Aug-1901 [a] (0-1) L1-2 Airdrieonians (SFL Second Division - game 1)
– Gailey (the best player afield) had an early chance but soon Wilkie was pulling off some fine saves. He blundered with a 30-yarder he thought was going over the bar so Airdrie went in 1-up at half-time. Massie went close then an OG following a corner made it 1-1 but Airdrie soon scored with an unsavable shot. Unlucky.
Wed-17-Aug-1898 [h] (0-3) L0-4 Celtic (Friendly)
– Thistle, weakened by injuries, were seldom seen as an attacking force They went behind (7) and it was 3-0 at half-time. “The Parkhead men…treated the spectators to some tricky play” (GH). Victorian showboating. The Thistle team was largely “experimental” (DET) - certainly unrecognisable for the most part.
Sat-17-Aug-1895 [a] (2-1) L2-3 Port Glasgow Athletic (SFL Second Division - game 1)
– Port went close with an overhead kick but Thistle went 2-up (probably Paterson, 15 and definitely Paterson, 30). Port reduced the lead on half-time, levelled in the second half and went ahead 30 secs later with a header from a cross from the right. A 4th goal was disallowed (offside) but Thistle were well beaten.
Sat-17-Aug-1889 [a] (2-1) W7-2 Airdrieonians (Friendly)
– Thistle scored (Gorham) but Airdrie eventually levelled. Thistle had a goal disallowed (ball not over the line) before they went 2-1 up at half-time. The second half was one-sided. 5 more goals included a 2nd from Gorham, (probably) 4 from Robertson and an OG by the Airdrie keeper. Airdrie scored for 6-2 but it was a “tremendous slashing“ (LUWE).
