Sat-15-Aug-2015 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Kilmarnock (SPFL Premiership - game 4)
– Doolan scored with a fine individual effort (8) and hit the post soon after as Thistle dominated but a quickly taken free-kick led to a leveller (38). Lindsay saw red (last man foul, 65). Fraser hit the bar then Doolan scored (78) but a header (85) made it 2-2. Killie were lucky they weren't killed off in the first half.
Sat-15-Aug-2009 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Ross County (SFL First Division - game 2)
– This was a towsy game with 2 red cards and 8 yellow. Thistle had the best of the few chances on offer but couldn't capitalise even when County were reduced to 10 men (lunge, 34). McKeown was sent off (tangle, 55). Manager McCall was unimpressed. “Our passing was poor…our movement was poor“.
Tue-15-Aug-2006 [h] (1-2) L1-2 Albion Rovers (Challenge Cup 1st Round)
– A real shocker as Thistle slumped to an embarrassing defeat. 3rd Div Rovers went 1-up (3) and Thistle woke up. A Ferguson near-post header (21) from a McCulloch corner levelled but Rovers scored a fine goal through future-JAG Chaplain (28). Thistle had most of the second half but couldn't find the net.
Tue-15-Aug-2000 [h] (0-0) L0-2 Livingston (Challenge Cup 1st Round)
– Honours were even in the first half as both teams went looking for the opener. In the second half First Division Livingston attacked more and Thistle were restricted to hitting them on the break. Substitute Ex-JAG Britton scored with a head-flick (73) and the 2nd was side-footed home in injury time.
Sat-15-Aug-1998 [a] (1-0) W1-0 Forfar Athletic (SFL Second Division - game 2)
– Thistle had the wind at their backs and a fine run and shot by Lauchlan (30) put them ahead. The defence played well in the second half and Forfar seldom looked like equalising. A shot by Martin was cleared off the line (90). A workmanlike performance if nothing else against a poor side.
Sat-15-Aug-1992 [a] (0-0) L1-2 Heart of Midlothian (SFL Premier Division - game 4)
– Missed chances, bad luck and nothing to show from a game that Thistle dominated for long spells. Hearts scored with a deflected shot (61) off a teammate but Britton scored from the spot when Irons was pulled down a few minutes later. Another deflection off a teammate late on gave Thistle a bitter taste in the mouth.
Sat-15-Aug-1987 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Raith Rovers (SFL First Division - game 3)
– Thistle hammered away at the Raith defence for much of the match. Kelly waltzed past 2 defenders but hit the bar (4). Even Brough got in on the act with his huge kick-outs but to no avail. Poor crossed into the box were a problem and misery was completed when Watson's penalty was saved (90).
Sat-15-Aug-1981 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Ayr United (League Cup Section 4 - game 3)
– 2 goals in 3 matches indicated where Thistle's problems lay. Doyle went close from 30 yards and Gibson and Higgins tried hard but there was no punch up front. A header from a corner (19) made for an uphill task but the forwards weren't up to breaking down First Division Ayr's solid defence.
Wed-15-Aug-1979 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Semi Final)
– Thistle squandered their first half chances and eventually fell out of the match. Rangers took the lead (7) then Park and Gibson went close as Thistle fought back. They had a shout for a pen rejected and had a good spell before half-time but Rangers' 2nd goal (looking off-side, 63) killed off Thistle's challenge.
Wed-15-Aug-1973 [h] (0-2) L0-3 Dundee (League Cup Section 3 - game 2)
– Dundee had too much to offer Thistle's inexperienced side. A ridiculously easy opener (22) then a shot from the edge of the box (40) made it 2-0 at half-time. A 30-yard free-kick by Glavin was as close as Thistle got. A whipped shot before Rough moved (60) and it was all over. “Men against boys” (ET).
Sat-15-Aug-1970 [a] (0-0) D1-1 East Fife (League Cup Section 5 - game 3)
– A diving header by Bone almost gave lively Thistle an early lead then East Fife almost took advantage of a poor pass-back by Rae. Campbell went off injured (30) and was replaced by Forsyth. Thistle had the better chances in the second half but it ended a goal apiece. Rae scored for Thistle (77) but the equaliser came 10 minutes later.
Sat-15-Aug-1964 [h] (2-1) W2-1 Heart of Midlothian (League Cup Section 3 - game 3)
– An exciting game. McParland moved down the left, took a return pass from Duffy and scored (10). His back heeler set up Hainey for the 2nd goal (12) then an innocent looking header made it 2-1 (21). McParland went off injured (30) but returned a passenger after half-time. Thistle held on thanks to Niven's heroics.
Wed-15-Aug-1962 [a] (1-0) W3-1 Falkirk (League Cup Section 3 - game 2)
– Goals from Duffy, Whitelaw and McBride won the points. Falkirk's No 5 was injured and limped on the wing for most of the second half but they were well beaten before that. But for some excellent goalkeeping it could have been a bigger win. Thistle were the better team in all respects, especially at half-back.
Sat-15-Aug-1959 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Raith Rovers (League Cup Section 1 - game 3)
– Thistle were chasing the game once Rovers scored (2). Towards half-time they got into the game but lacked punch and seldom threatened. In the second half things improved and they forced the pace. Donlevy went close from 25 yards but Rovers added a 2nd (79) to remain unbeaten at the top of the section.
Wed-15-Aug-1956 [h] (2-1) W3-1 Heart of Midlothian (League Cup Section 4 - game 2)
– Unchanged Thistle went 2-up against the Scottish Cup holders through MacKenzie from an acute angle (1) then Ewing from a Wright pass (7). Hearts scored just before half-time. “Hearts had no answer to the artistry and incisive running of MacKenzie” (GH) and he laid on a pass for Wright (86). Top of the section.
Sat-15-Aug-1953 [a] (1-1) D1-1 Dundee (League Cup Division A, Section D - game 3)
– Dundee led following a free-kick (3) then Davidson went close with one from a 30-yards. Dundee hit the post but Sharp equalised just before half-time with a low shot from 15 yards. Ledgerwood had a magnificent save on the hour to keep it at 1-1. Thistle remained 2 points behind section leaders Dundee.
Wed-15-Aug-1951 [a] (0-0) W1-0 Stirling Albion (League Cup Division A, Section B - game 2)
– Stirling twice tested Ledgerwood and Stott was warned by the ref for “robust charging” (GH). After half-time a last ditch tackle robbed Stott then a Stirling defender headed the ball against his own crossbar. Stott scored (48) from a Walker cross then Ledgerwood kept unlucky Albion (who had most of the play) at bay.
Sat-15-Aug-1942 [a] (1-0) L1-2 Morton (Southern League - game 2)
– Enforced last-minute changes meant a makeshift defence but Thistle gave a good account of themselves. McSpadyen gave them the lead (21) but in the second half it was all Morton. They equalised (67) then a fine individual effort beating several defenders brought them the winner (89).
Sat-15-Aug-1936 [a] (1-1) D2-2 Queen's Park (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Wallace hit the bar early on then a defensive mix-up led to a 20-yarder by Elliott from a cut-back (27). Queens fought back and equalised just on half-time and a fine solo effort (50) put them ahead then the post denied them a 3rd. A Regan corner was headed in by Hastie (75) as tempers frayed.
Sat-15-Aug-1931 [h] (1-2) L1-2 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 2)
– There was nothing between the teams except that the forwards let Thistle down. Falkirk took an early lead but Morrison equalised (10) finishing off a fine combined move. A second goal (21) proved to be the winner. The second half was virtually all Thistle but they didn't take their chances.
Sat-15-Aug-1925 [h] (2-0) W3-1 Cowdenbeath (SFL First Division - game 1)
– In “broiling heat” (SP) a shaky start to the season. 2 Gibson penalties settled the nerves then he set up Miller who made it 3-0. Cowdenbeath scored 20 minutes from time and went on to miss a penalty. They played some nice football, hit the woodwork twice and the score was harsh on them.
Fri-15-Aug-1924 [a] (0-1) L2-3 Hibernian (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Tynecastle. Trailing from the 12th min, Thistle got into the game and hit the post. Collins was knocked out and carried off then Salisbury missed an open goal. 2 down in 55 mins, the 10 men rallied and goals by Salisbury and Kinloch made it 2-2 with 10 minutes to go but Hibs scored the winner (89).
Sat-15-Aug-1914 [a] (0-2) L0-4 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Ayr overwhelmed Thistle. They trailed 2-0 at half-time in quick time and never seriously threatened. A soft pen for hand ball against Gardiner made it 3 then a shot Campbell thought was going wide piled on the misery. “Partick Thistle have been a source of disappointment to their friends” (GH).
Thu-15-Aug-1912 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Dumbarton Harp (Friendly)
– The season opened on the now traditional 15th at Meadow Park and it was the home side - with some strong new signings - who came out on top, with McCormick (ex Arthurlie/Dumbarton) showing his experience as custodian to great effect.
Tue-15-Aug-1911 [h] (0-0) D1-1 Morton (SFL First Division - game 1)
– 8,000 saw only one new face from the previous season (Stewart). There was nothing between the teams. The game was open but both sets of forwards wasted good chances. The goals came from a Raisbeck penalty (82) and Morton equaliser soon afterwards.
Sat-15-Aug-1908 [a] (0-1) L1-4 Kilmarnock (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Homeless. An even first half saw a Gilchrist OG (40) give Kilmarnock a half-time lead. 2 more goals (46 and 47) rocked Thistle and a 4th put the result beyond doubt. Killie had 12 corners in the match. Robertson scored a consolation goal late on. Thistle started the season bottom and faced having to play every game “away”.
Thu-15-Aug-1907 [h] (0-1) L0-4 Clyde (Friendly)
– No way to start the season! The Thistle team included a number of new faces and although the first half was even, Clyde gradually asserted themselves. A slip allowed them to score before half-time. The second half was all Clyde. Three more goals (the 3rd a penalty) saw them finish in complete control. The game was stopped 15 minutes from time.
Wed-15-Aug-1906 [a] (0-1) L1-3 Third Lanark (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Thistle had 4 new faces. Gibson (N) missed a penalty before Thirds took the lead but they responded with 7 fruitless corners before half-time. It was 2-0 just after the interval then Campbell scored after more corners. The Thirds keeper saved a second Gibson pen then his side scored with one to take the points.
Tue-15-Aug-1905 [h] (2-2) L2-3 St Mirren (Friendly)
– Six minutes into the new season Thistle (with 4 new signings playing) were 2 down. They countered with a goal from Brown with a shot through a ruck of players close in then Hamilton equalised before half-time with “a clever effort“ (SC). The second half was even but Saints, the better team, eventually edged Thistle out.
Mon-15-Aug-1904 [h] (1-2) L1-2 Port Glasgow Athletic (Friendly)
– Port went one up within a few minutes with a shot off the bar. They were the better team, had a goal disallowed for off-side and went 2-up with a penalty but McIlvenny made it 2-1 at half-time. Thistle (with 6 new faces) missed a penalty. Due to the late start the second half ended on 35 minutes (darkness).
Sat-15-Aug-1903 [a] (1-1) L1-2 Celtic (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Ltd Liability Co 4 August 1903. Celtic took the lead (10) after a parried save by Howden. Thistle levelled with a long free-kick by Campbell (the keeper letting the ball in thinking it was indirect). Celtic's forwards were “feeble” (GH) and Howden saved a pen but a goalmouth scramble (90) won the points. Unlucky.
Thu-15-Aug-1901 [h] (0-1) D1-1 St Bernard's (Friendly)
– St Bernard's scored in just 3 minutes and for some time Wilkie was a busy keeper. They showed “superior combination” (EEN) but Thistle (with 4 new signings) kept plugging away and Law found an opening for 1-1.
Wed-15-Aug-1900 [a] (2-0) D3-3 Celtic (SFL First Division - game 1)
– In beautiful weather and with 8 new signings, Thistle took the lead through Gibbons then just on half-time Hyslop made it 2-0. Celtic hit back with two goals then a 3rd came when the unsighted Wilkie made no attempt to save. 2 minutes later Fairgrieve levelled. Encouraging start to the new season.
Tue-15-Aug-1899 [h] (1-1) L3-4 Clyde (Friendly)
– Thistle had 6 new signings playing, Clyde (in liquidation) had 10. Clyde took the lead from the kick-off without a Thistle player touching the ball but Paul levelled (15). Clyde's Junior centre-forward scored a 2nd-half hat-trick and it was 4-1 before McDougall and McNicoll (pen, 80) made it look better.
Mon-15-Aug-1898 [a] (0-5) L0-8 Linthouse (Friendly)
– Thistle (with a number of new signings) were completely outplayed by Linthouse who were 3-up in 15 minutes and led 5-0 at half-time. “Painfully one-sided”. “Save Duncan…and Auchencloss, the losers played very inferior football” (GH). Injuries to McDiarmid and Faulds meant the second half was played with 9 men.
Sat-15-Aug-1896 [a] (?-?) D2-2 Dumbarton (SFL Second Division - game 1)
– “At Dumbarton before 2,000 spectators. Result: 2 goals each“ (SC).
Wed-15-Aug-1894 [h] (0-1) D1-1 Third Lanark (Friendly)
– There was nothing much between the teams. First Division Third Lanark scored (20). Bruce scored with a free-kick on the hour mark after which play was slightly in favour of Thistle but it ended in a draw in this Wednesday night friendly.
Sat-15-Aug-1891 [a] (2-0) W2-1 East Stirlingshire (Scottish Alliance - game 2)
– Davie scored for Thistle (shot partially saved and off a post, 20) and then Paul hit the bar. A shot from Davie was saved but the keeper was charged over the line (30). Shire pressed for long spells, hit woodwork several and earned several corners but their headed goal (80) wasn't enough. Top - for a week!
Wed-15-Aug-1888 [n] (1-1) W2-1 Kilbirnie (Exhibition Cup Quarter Final)
– Kelvingrove Park. The game was restricted to 2 x 35 minutes and it stood 1-1 at half-time but Thistle got the winner after the break to face Celtic in the next round. “Fully 4,000“ (GEP) watched this Wednesday night match.
Mon-15-Aug-1887 [h] (1-0) W2-0 Western Hibernians (St Peter's FC Fundraiser)
– A Monday night friendly against a composite team of Irishmen resident in Scotland - including Burns the Thistle goalkeeper. A goal in each half (Proudfoot on his debut (5)) and McEwan (75) was enough on the night and the score should have been greater because Thistle hit the bar several times.
