Tue-14-Aug-2018 [a] (3-0) W5-0 Stranraer (Challenge Cup 1st Round)
– O'Ware's header (10) put Thistle 1-up. Fitzpatrick cut inside and shot home (34) then Mutombo converted a low cross (36). Stranraer had more of the play as Thistle eased off. The home keeper fouled Doolan and was red-carded (82) then Melbourne (89) and Fitzpatrick (92) completed the comprehensive win.
Tue-14-Aug-2012 [a] (2-1) W5-4 Queen's Park (Challenge Cup 2nd Round)
– Queens scored 1st with a stunning 30-yarder (18) but Sinclair scored from close in at the 2nd attempt (34) then Elliott headed a 2nd goal before half-time. Queens scored (54) but Erskine restored the lead (65). 2 late goals (81 and 86) and it looked like curtains but Bannigan and Erskine scored in added time for a dramatic win.
Sat-14-Aug-2010 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 2)
– At last, a goal against Dundee (1 goal in previous 8)! Two Thistle players failed to connect with a cross (inside 2 mins). Dundee had their best spell and went close in a breakaway. Thistle rallied and the game became more open. Boyle scored with a header (71) then Thistle held out comfortably till the end.
Sat-14-Aug-2004 [h] (1-1) W3-2 Airdrie United (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Gibson (B) was outstanding in this exciting game. O Coyle (who else?) gave Airdrie the lead (19) but Escalas equalised (34) with a diving header. Hinds capitalised on slack defensive work (54) then Coyle made it 2-2 (header, 67). A draw looked likely until Mitchell rose to head in a Fleming corner (70).
Tue-14-Aug-2001 [a] (1-2) W5-3 Raith Rovers (Challenge Cup 2nd Round) aet
– AET. Kirkcaldy again. Novo was again the danger. Thistle fell behind (13), McDowell equalised (35) then Novo scored just on half-time. McCallum headed home a long throw-in to level (74). 2 magnificent strikes from Fleming (100 and 105, 30-yarder and a free-kick) then Hardie (tap-in, 114) made it 5 then Raith scored (120).
Sat-14-Aug-1999 [a] (0-0) L0-1 Alloa Athletic (SFL Second Division - game 2)
– The game was held up for 13 minutes when the referee broke his nose in a collision with McKeown. For the 2nd time in as many weeks Thistle were the better team for long spells but Alloa got the only goal of the game (strike, 76). No goals, no wins, no doubts about the size of the task facing Lambie.
Sat-14-Aug-1993 [h] (0-1) L1-2 Dundee United (SFL Premier Division - game 2)
– 2 headers from corners (26 and 71) exposed Thistle's defensive weakness yet they matched United for long spells. A scrambled trundler by Craig (67) levelled but United scored again soon after. Cameron hit the post and United withstood late Thistle pressure to win. “They will play a lot worse and win” (GH). Unlucky.
Tue-14-Aug-1990 [a] (2-0) W3-2 Portadown (Friendly)
– A better performance this time with Paterson of Glentoran as guest keeper. Flood found space early on then Craig shot home just on half-time for a 2-0 lead but Thistle lost their way and Portadown pulled it back to 2-2 with 5 minutes left but Wright scored even later from an uncleared corner.
Sat-14-Aug-1982 [a] (4-0) W4-0 East Stirlingshire (League Cup Section 7 - game 1)
– This proved to be a romp in the sunshine. After a brief flurry by 'Shire, Thistle took the lead (8) with a Johnston header. Kenny made it 2-0 (18) then Watson scored with an easy header (31). Johnston got his second 2nd (41). Thistle could have doubled the score but lost their way. 'Shire lost their keeper to injury at half-time!
Sat-14-Aug-1976 [a] (1-1) D1-1 Motherwell (League Cup Section 1 - game 1)
– Thistle were criticised by the Motherwell manager for being too defensive but Auld refused to be drawn into an argument. Joe Craig opened the scoring (29) but Motherwell levelled just on half-time. Not so effective in the second half, Thistle held on comfortably although a diving save by Rough saved the day (82).
Wed-14-Aug-1974 [a] (0-0) D2-2 Clyde (League Cup Section 1 - game 2)
– “New manager:Auld Thistle” (GH). The game came only to life with Clyde's opener (48) but Glavin scored from 25 yards (63). A glancing header from a free-kick (69) put Clyde ahead but an innocent looking cross by McQuade sailed into the net (75). Thistle pressed but Clyde deserved the draw.
Sat-14-Aug-1971 [h] (4-0) W4-0 Arbroath (League Cup Section 7 - game 1)
– “Easy for Jags in goal rush” (ET). McQuade was a threat from the start, first down the wing then through the middle. A goal by Bone on 5 minutes when he swept a Coulston cut-back in from 20 yards gave Thistle the lead. Arbroath had a couple of half chances but it was McQuade who scored next when he was given time and space to bring the ball down and thump it into the net from a corner (16). A few minutes later it was 3-0. Bone and Coulston combined well inside the box to set up Lawrie from close range. On the half hour Bone was hauled down in the box and he gave Thistle a commanding 4-0 lead from the spot. Thistle were content to contain Arbroath in the second half, although they did have a few half chances. Arbroath, with their laborious build up, seldom threatened and Thistle ran out comfortable winners against the second division team.
Wed-14-Aug-1968 [h] (0-2) L1-5 Rangers (League Cup Section 4 - game 2)
– A shot under Ritchie's body and when McKinnon's header off the line was fired back in put Thistle 2-down in 20 mins. 2 goals (49 and 59) and a 5th (62) underlined how much Thistle were out of it but Bone pounced on a poor pass-back (58). Flanagan and Gallagher tried hard but to no avail.
Sat-14-Aug-1965 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Dunfermline Athletic (League Cup Section 3 - game 1)
– Brilliant saves in the 1st few minutes by both keepers augured well but the game soon deteriorated into a tough, negative struggle with Thistle adopting the off-side trap. Ex-JAG Fleming featured well and the Pars hit the post. Slow hand clapping spurred Thistle on and Conway's effort was cleared off the line (80).
Wed-14-Aug-1963 [a] (2-1) D2-2 Falkirk (League Cup Section 1 - game 2)
– Falkirk went ahead when a shot bounced over diving Niven's head into the net but 2 goals in 3 minutes put much-changed Thistle ahead. Cunningham scored from close in and Hainey latched on to a Cunningham through pass but Falkirk got going in the second half and got a deserved equaliser (70).
Wed-14-Aug-1957 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Rangers (League Cup Section 2 - game 2)
– “Rangers somewhat lucky” (GH). Thistle were the better team early on and Ewing hit the bar. Ledgerwood saved a feeble pen and Smith saw 2 shots cleared off the line. Eventually Rangers' power told and they scored (50). Wright hit the post from 30 yards late on and a draw would have been deserved.
Sat-14-Aug-1954 [h] (2-1) W3-2 Clyde (League Cup Division A, Section C - game 1)
– Two Ledgerwood saves in the dying minutes prevented Clyde stealing a point. Thistle were far superior. Howitt scored (3) but a pen (37) made it 1-1 then MacKenzie shot home (39). McGowan limped on the wing for most of the second half but Howitt made sure with a tap-in (57) before Clyde scored from the pen spot (65).
Sat-14-Aug-1948 [h] (1-0) W3-0 Albion Rovers (SFL Division A - game 1)
– A scrambled effort by Kinnell gave Thistle the lead (43) against newly-promoted Rovers. An excellent 2nd by McCallum - “a goal delightful in conception” (SP) - made it 2-0 (61) before Kinnell scored again from a Wright cross (88). On general play it should have been far more convincing.
Wed-14-Aug-1946 [a] (0-0) W4-1 Heart of Midlothian (SFL Division A - game 2)
– Slack play from the start by Hearts allowed Thistle to dictate the match but it took until the second half when O'Donnell (47) and Chisholm (68) to put them well ahead. A glorious 20-yarder (70) didn't spark a Hearts revival and late goals by O'Donnell and Chisholm made for an emphatic win. “Hearts' failure“ (EEN).
Sat-14-Aug-1943 [a] (1-1) W3-2 Heart of Midlothian (Southern League - game 1)
– Hearts took the lead (20) and were the better team then Newall equalised (29) against the run of play. Henderson had some fine saves and Newall completed his hat-trick (83 and 84) before Hearts scored (88). A flattering start to the season. Hearts hit the bar 3 times and wasted numerous chances.
Sat-14-Aug-1937 [a] (2-2) L2-4 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 1)
– The season was less than a minute old when Wallace put Thistle ahead. Hamilton equalised (22). Wallace scored again but it was 2-2 at half-time. Once their defenders managed to subdue McSpadyen, Hamilton put on a fine second half performance and two excellent goals won them the points.
Sat-14-Aug-1926 [a] (1-1) D1-1 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Thistle (with 5 new faces) had all the pressure but Falkirk scored (14). Play swung in their favour until Hair scored just on half-time thanks to a miskick by a defender. Play in the second half was even but Thistle had the better chances. The Falkirk keeper had some brilliant saves to deny them a winner.
