Sat-11-Aug-2018 [h] (2-0) W2-1 Falkirk (SPFL Championship - game 2)
– Penrice's deflected shot put Thistle 1-up (24) then Erskine fired home from 18 yards (28). 2 excellent solo efforts. Finally Falkirk threatened and a free-kick hit the bar then Bell's back and a header from the resulting corner did likewise (60). A low shot (91) spoiled things but it was a much improved performance.
Fri-11-Aug-2017 [h] (0-1) L0-1 Celtic (SPFL Premiership - game 2)
– Celtic (unbeaten in 51) were streets ahead in possession but a volley from 25 yards deflected past Cerny (25) was enough. A better second half from Thistle saw Doolan miss with a header and a strong pen claim (90) was ignored but, in truth, they created very little. It was an outstanding defensive performance however.
Sat-11-Aug-2012 [h] (2-0) W3-1 Falkirk (SFL First Division - game 1)
– 2 up in 10 minutes with goals from Lawless when he steered in a Welsh cross and Doolan with a shot in the corner of the net, an error by Fox let Falkirk back into the game with a surprise shot (53). A 3rd goal by Doolan when he picked up a rebound from a save by the keeper (57) made for an excellent win.
Tue-11-Aug-2009 [h] (0-1) D1-1 Liverpool XI (Alan Archibald Testimonial)
– Alan Archibald testimonial. A bright start saw Erskine and Rowson go close then a header from a free-kick (42) put Liverpool ahead. Archibald went off (63) to rapturous applause then Doolan set up Erskine for the equaliser (72). The keeper took two attempts to prevent a winner from Erskine shortly after.
Sat-11-Aug-2007 [h] (2-0) W3-0 Livingston (SFL First Division - game 2)
– As comfortable as the score suggests. Roberts had a “goal“ disallowed for off-side before Rowson went close. A min later Strachan took the ball round the keeper to score (18) then he scored again from close in (24). Buchanan scored early in the second half to seal a fine win. Tuffey had only one save (81).
Sat-11-Aug-2001 [a] (1-0) W2-1 Raith Rovers (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Thistle took early control of the game and after several misses, Britton scored from a parried save (45) and a back-heel (49). They fell out of the game and Rovers reduced the lead (56). Novo was sent off (2nd yellow for a kick at Hardie, 67) and Thistle saw the game out reasonably comfortably.
Wed-11-Aug-1993 [a] (2-0) W11-1 Albion Rovers (League Cup 2nd Round)
– Fir Park. Craig ran on to huge punt (26), Britton touched home a cross (37). Lambie roasting at half-time. English was set up by Britton (55), Jamieson header (60), Law from acute angle (64), Craig from close in (70), Cameron ( 4 goals in 11 mins) and Grant (90). Rovers scored to make it 8-1. “Hit men run riot” (DR).
Tue-11-Aug-1992 [h] (0-0) W2-0 Ayr United (League Cup 2nd Round)
– It was a struggle to break down defence-minded Ayr but Thistle did enough to win through once they reverted to a flat back 4 (from 5) at half-time. A Farningham header (61) broke the deadlock then a 2nd header by Kinnaird (78) made sure. Shaw hit the post (85) as Thistle saw the game out in well in control.
Tue-11-Aug-1987 [h] (2-2) D2-2 Airdrieonians (SFL First Division - game 2)
– Future-JAG Flood put Airdrie ahead (4) then a flare up saw 3 players booked. A pen converted by Watson put Thistle level but Airdrie went ahead for the 2nd time before Logan equalised 2 minutes later. Airdrie were reduced to 10 men in the second half (2nd yellow).
Sat-11-Aug-1984 [a] (0-2) L0-4 Forfar Athletic (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Forfar celebrated the Div 2 championship with pipe Bands, dignitaries etc. Thistle joined in the spirit of the occasion and went behind (3) following Brough's weak punch out. An unmarked header (35) made it 2-0. Thistle hardly threatened, Hutchison was sent off (63) and 2 more goals completed the celebrations.
Wed-11-Aug-1982 [h] (0-2) L0-2 Newcastle United (Friendly)
– Newcastle were far too good and ran out easy winners. The were 2-up in 17 minutes with 2 cracking goals by Varadi. Park, Doyle (J) and Kenny all went close as Thistle tried to make an impression but Newcastle were always in control and contained Thistle with their 2 goal cushion without difficulty.
Sat-11-Aug-1979 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Aberdeen (SFL Premier Division - game 1)
– Rough was under early pressure and Aberdeen hit the bar/post from 30 yards. Thistle improved and showed some attacking initiative and Park (who also found the woodwork) was clean through but was hauled back just outside the box. It took a disputed pen by McAdam (hand ball, 90) to win the game.
Wed-11-Aug-1976 [h] (0-1) W3-1 Raith Rovers (Anglo-Scottish Cup Preliminary Round, 2nd leg) agg: W5-2
– AGG: 5-2. The League Championship flag was unfurled, stuffy Rovers spoiled the party and took a half-time lead. Much improved after half-time, Thistle went ahead when Hansen (A) twice rose to head home (48 and 58). Rovers were reduced to 10 men just before Joe Craig scored (68) with another header as Thistle coasted.
Sat-11-Aug-1973 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Heart of Midlothian (League Cup Section 3 - game 1)
– After wasted chances at both ends Thistle had a reasonable shout for a pen rejected. Kellachan headed off the line then Hearts scored with a fine header from a corner (25). Glavin wasted good chances either side of half-time and Rough had a brilliant save as Hearts dominated. A pen (80) made it 2-0.
Mon-11-Aug-1969 [h] (0-1) L2-3 Rangers (Glasgow Cup Final replay)
– The 1968-69 final replay held over from 15 April. Thistle failed to take advantage of an uninspiring Rangers' performance. Bone equalised an earlier goal (53) and they had their best spell but Rangers went 3-1 up. There was time for a Flanagan pen (87) then jittery Rangers resorted to time-wasting.
Sat-11-Aug-1962 [h] (0-0) L1-2 Aberdeen (League Cup Section 3 - game 1)
– A bruising start to the season. McKinnon was taken to hospital with severe concussion (25). Brown and Hogan required treatment at one stage then Brown collapsed and Aberdeen scored while Thistle were down to 9 men (68). Hogan was taken off (70) and Aberdeen scored (87) but so did Duffy with a flying header from a Smith cross (90).
Sat-11-Aug-1956 [a] (0-0) W2-0 Falkirk (League Cup Section 4 - game 1)
– Thistle were virtually unchanged from the previous season. The first half was all effort, no quality. Smith went closest but his shot was brilliantly saved. MacKenzie was fouled in the box and Davidson scored with the pen (49) then a Ewing header, set up by Wright, (72) clinched the win. Smith saved a pen late on.
Sat-11-Aug-1951 [h] (3-1) W4-2 Hibernian (League Cup Division A, Section B - game 1)
– Hibs scored (13) with a cheeky, quickly taken 25-yard free-kick as the defenders were retreating but Stott scored twice (a short free-kick from Davidson, 41 and a header, 42) then Walker scored from close in (44). Hibs scored (soft penalty, 67) but Crawford hooked home a long Thomson throw-in (73). A fine win.
Sat-11-Aug-1945 [a] (0-0) W1-0 Hamilton Academical (Southern League, Division A - game 1)
– Just 42 days since a ball was last kicked in anger, the season started. Fine goalkeeping restricted Thistle to a goal by Stockdale (69) when a pass-back got the Hamilton defence in a muddle and the ball broke to McGeachy who laid it on for him. Brown “in a class by himself” (SP) had several pile-drivers saved.
Sat-11-Aug-1934 [h] (2-1) W2-1 Aberdeen (SFL First Division - game 1)
– McLennan tapped in a loose ball (5) but after they had hit the post, Aberdeen deservedly equalised (17). Thistle (virtually unchanged since the previous season) broke away and Ness knocked in a hard low cross (44). There were close things at both ends in a goalless second half. A fortunate win.
Sat-11-Aug-1928 [a] (2-1) W4-2 Raith Rovers (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Rovers had the best of things early on before Gibson scored from close in against the run of play. Fraser added a 2nd then Rovers made it 2-1 at half-time. The game deteriorated but Gibson scored as did Rovers off Jackson's foot as he lay sprawling. Gibson finished off a Salisbury cross for his hat-trick.
Sat-11-Aug-1917 [a] (1-1) L1-2 Motherwell (War Fund Benefit)
– This limbless forces fund-raiser gave the teams the opportunity to try out their new signings - all of whom seemed to impress. It was mainly a half-back battle with keen tackling and good support of the forwards. Black got the Thistle goal to level by half-time but the winner was literally the last kick of the game.
Sat-11-Aug-1894 [h] (2-0) W5-2 Dundee Wanderers (SFL Second Division - game 1)
– Campbell (J) opened the scoring (12) after chances at both ends were missed. Wanderers had a spell of pressure but Murray made it 2-0 at half-time. The lead was reduced but soon it was 3-1. Wanderers made it 3-2 (possibly scored by Proudfoot (L), new signing from Thistle), but 2 more goals made for a big win.
Sat-11-Aug-1888 [h] (2-0) W4-2 Kilbirnie (Friendly)
– Kilbirnie beat Kilmarnock 1-0 in an Exhibition Cup tie earlier the same day. They started strongly but soon fell back into defence. Thistle went 2-up, the 1st through Hislop. The second half saw Kilbirnie make it 2-1 (55) but Hislop scored again then McBride made it 3 before Kilbirnie scored late on.
