Sat-10-Aug-2024 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Raith Rovers (SPFL Championship - game 2)
– A penalty proved to be the winner (foul by Williams, 27). Thistle looked the more likely but, in truth, didn't carry enough threat and the Raith keeper had some fine saves. Robinson's stamp earned a straight red (76) but, even so, Thistle continued to have spells on top. More rub of the green and a clinical finish would be welcome.
Sat-10-Aug-2013 [a] (1-0) W3-1 Ross County (SPFL Premiership - game 2)
– County could not cope with Thistle's fast wing raids. Doolan knocked in a Balatoni glancing header (18) then Lawless scored twice from a parried Bannigan shot (53) and a pass from Bannigan (59) then a wicked deflection beat Fox (71). Higginbotham was robbed of a goal (88). Tremendous win.
Tue-10-Aug-2010 [h] (1-1) W2-1 Berwick Rangers (Challenge Cup 2nd Round)
– Having had almost all of the possession and chances, Thistle found themselves 1-down after poor defending at a corner (27). The equaliser came from a Cairney shot from the edge of the box (40). Thistle had most of the play but few chances. Rowson swept in a cross for a narrow win (80).
Sat-10-Aug-2002 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Motherwell (Scottish Premier League - game 2)
– Even in August, billed as a relegation 6-pointer (!) this was a fiercely competitive match (around 50 fouls). Chances were scarce and it looked as if Burns' goal was going to secure the points (touched in a knock-on by Hardie, 81) but the defence went AWOL soon after and Motherwell levelled (83).
Tue-10-Aug-1999 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Albion Rovers (Challenge Cup 1st Round)
– The disastrous start to 1999-00 continues. “Rovers sting sorry JAGs” (ACA). Duncan's cross-cum-shot grazed a post early on but Rovers went ahead when Budinauckas blocked a shot and the rebound was tucked away (11). Ineffective Thistle grew increasingly desperate but Rovers broke away and scored their second (90+3).
Sat-10-Aug-1996 [h] (0-0) W3-1 Queen's Park (Challenge Cup 1st Round) aet
– AET. Queens opened the scoring (53) after a goalkeeping error by Cairns. Thistle had struggled but a Stirling free-kick (54) and goals by Henderson and Maskrey (both headers) in extra time secured a shaky win. “We had too much of the ball” (MacLeod). No reason to get carried away.
Sat-10-Aug-1991 [a] (0-1) L1-2 Morton (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Morton went ahead (66 secs) when they latched on to a huge clearance by the keeper. Rae headed in a McLaughlin corner 2 minutes into the second half and Thistle dominated for a spell but Bell was sent off (prof foul, on his debut) and minutes later Morton scored (low grounder, 74). Fine saves by Murdoch kept it at 2-1.
Sat-10-Aug-1985 [h] (0-1) D1-1 Morton (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Morton, relegated from the Premier Division and with ex-Jag O'Hara in defence, took the initiative from the start and went ahead (5) with an unmarked header. Thistle struggled to get into the game and the finishing was poor but Donnelly (J) equalised with a 20-yard free-kick (56) when Kelly was fouled.
Wed-10-Aug-1977 [a] (0-1) D1-1 Clydebank (Anglo-Scottish Cup Preliminary Round, 2nd leg) agg: W4-1
– AGG: 4-1. Clydebank fought all the way and led 1-0 at half-time. They missed several good chances and could have reduced the aggregate lead but Melrose (a substitute in the second half) spared Thistle's blushes with an equaliser (85) although he handled the ball before scoring. The ref, however, was “unmoved” (ET).
Sat-10-Aug-1974 [h] (2-0) W4-0 Arbroath (League Cup Section 1 - game 1)
– “Happy start for Auld” (GH). Glavin's pen (15) gave bright and breezy Thistle the lead then Coulston (in excellent form) scored with a shot through the keeper's legs (37). He headed in a Lawrie cross (47) and his cross set up McQuade for the 4th (54). McQuade also hit the post in a one-sided match.
Sat-10-Aug-1968 [a] (2-1) W3-1 Morton (League Cup Section 4 - game 1)
– A fierce left foot drive gave Morton the lead (13) but Duncan equalised (33) when he shot home a parried free-kick by Coulston then Bone took advantage of a poor pass-back (45). Thistle survived a Morton fight-back and Cunningham scored from 25 yards (77) to start the season with a good win.
Sat-10-Aug-1963 [h] (0-2) L0-2 Motherwell (League Cup Section 1 - game 1)
– A shot off the bar (2) and when the defence was sold a dummy at a free-kick by ex-JAG McBride it led to a 2nd goal (5). Thereafter everyone could have gone home. Motherwell sat back; Thistle had little idea. A dive at McParland's feet and a Duffy header palmed on to the post were the only second half highlights.
Sat-10-Aug-1957 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Raith Rovers (League Cup Section 2 - game 1)
– Rovers scored with a side-footer (19) then Smith skimmed the bar from 25 yards. The home team missed a sitter then had a goal chalked off for off-side. In the second half it was mainly Rovers and although Thistle had a few attacks, they couldn't find an equaliser. A fine Ledgerwood save ensured it stayed 1-0.
Sat-10-Aug-1946 [h] (1-1) W4-1 Hamilton Academical (SFL Division A - game 1)
– “Near perfection in inside-forward play” (SP). Accies scored with a header (2) then an OG when a defender deflected in a Sharp shot made it 1-1 (22). It was all Thistle with a magnificent Brown-Parker-Husband half-back line in command. O'Donnell (58), Sharp (60) and Chisholm (80) got the goals. No weaknesses.
Sat-10-Aug-1940 [h] (2-2) W5-2 Dumbarton (Southern League - game 1)
– Much changed Dumbarton did well to hold Thistle to 2-2 at half-time but they tired in the second half and Thistle (without the suspended McSpadyen) ran out comfortable winners. Younger (2), Husband, Picken and Busby got the goals. “Thistle should do well in the new league” (DR). They finished 12th of 16.
Sat-10-Aug-1935 [a] (0-2) L0-2 Heart of Midlothian (SFL First Division - game 1)
– A hard-fought win for Hearts who were good, but not that good. They made the most of their chances (8 and 34) - the 1st looking well off-side. There was some good defensive and midfield play but Thistle's forwards could make nothing of the Hearts defence. Johnstone had a fine game.
Sat-10-Aug-1929 [h] (0-2) L0-2 Dundee (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Donald Turner was confirmed as manager on 3 May. Dundee, having won a corner in the 1st minute, scored in the 2nd. Thistle responded positively but a 2nd goal before half-time left them with it all to do. They could made no impression on the Dundee defence in the second half .
Sat-10-Aug-1918 [a] (0-1) L1-2 Motherwell (Charity Match)
– Thistle started this charity friendly brightly but once Motherwell took the lead with a fast, low drive (30) they had most of the game. In the second half Marshall got Thistle's goal from a breakaway beating the keeper “in good style” (SP) but by then Motherwell had gone 2-up. A fair result on the day.
Sat-10-Aug-1895 [h] (1-4) L3-5 Heart of Midlothian (Friendly)
– Thistle made a good start but league champions Hearts rushed to a 4-1 half-time lead. After sustained pressure a 2nd goal was finally scored but it finished with one more goal apiece.
Sat-10-Aug-1889 [a] (1-2) D3-3 Kilbirnie (Friendly)
– Fine weather greeted the new season. Play was ragged and shooting was erratic at first. Kilbirnie took the lead then hit the post. Hislop equalised but Kilbirnie made it 2-1 at half-time. Thistle then went 3-2 up through Ferguson and Drummond but Kilbirnie got the draw with a late scrambled goal.
Fri-10-Aug-1888 [n] (2-1) W5-2 Airdrieonians (Exhibition Cup 1st Round)
– Kelvingrove Park. To celebrate Glasgow Exhibition of 1888. There was an even start then Airdrie took the lead but 2 goals just before half-time put Thistle ahead. It was level soon after half-time but this reversal spurred Thistle on and 3 more goals made for a good win, helped by Airdrie falling out of the game.
Wed-10-Aug-1887 [a] (?-?) W4-1 Shettleston (Friendly)
– “The Shettleston football club opened the season last evening by a match with Partick Thistle. A good game resulted:- Partick Thistle, four goals, Shettleston, one goal” (SC). Paul scored a hat-trick.
