Tue-08-Aug-2017 [a] (0-0) W3-0 St Johnstone (League Cup 2nd Round)
– The first half was uneventful. Lawless broke the deadlock with a pen (foul on Nisbet, 50) and Edwards found the top corner from 25 yards (62). Saints had lots of pressure/corners but their efforts on goal were poor. A long clearance by Cerny was flicked on by Nisbet for Erskine (90) to round off a good night's work.
Sat-08-Aug-2009 [a] (1-1) D1-1 Ayr United (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Newly promoted Ayr went ahead in just 5 minutes when ex-JAG Roberts pounced on a Tuffey clearance 40 yards out on the touchline. After several close shaves Donnelly scored with a cut-back (20). Thistle pressed but Ayr were still a threat and hit the post. Both teams went all out but it ended 1-1.
Wed-08-Aug-2007 [h] (1-0) W2-1 Airdrie United (League Cup 1st Round)
– Thistle just scraped past Second Division Airdrie. Harkins scored from 20 yards (14) and everything looked comfortable but the second half was different however and Airdrie equalised just after the hour mark with a free header and looked the more likely but Murray scored from a Strachan cross (89) to avoid extra time.
Tue-08-Aug-2006 [a] (1-1) W3-1 Dundee (League Cup 1st Round)
– Back to Dens for another win. Dundee took the lead following a throw-in (10) but unchanged Thistle finally got into their stride and equalised (40) when Brady scored from 20 yards with a dipping shot. It was mostly Thistle after half-time and Gibson (G) netted from an acute angle (64) and Boyd headed in a corner (75).
Tue-08-Aug-2000 [h] (0-1) L1-2 Airdrieonians (League Cup 1st Round) aet
– AET. Airdrie deserved their half-time lead (a header). Cameron missed a pen (56) then McLean equalised with a cool finish (67). Deep in ET the ref awarded First Division Airdrie a free-kick but his linesman overruled him and they converted the pen (112). There was a brawl at the end of a bad-tempered match littered with hefty challenges.
Sat-08-Aug-1992 [a] (1-0) D1-1 St Johnstone (SFL Premier Division - game 3)
– Thistle went 1-up (8) when McGlashan slid in to hit home a rebound. Saints hit the post then Nelson saved a pen but they equalised (48) when the ref got in the way of a Thistle attack and St Johnstone broke up field to score. Tremendous goalkeeping by both keepers kept the score 1-1. “Delighted” (Lambie).
Sat-08-Aug-1987 [a] (1-1) L2-3 Meadowbank Thistle (SFL First Division - game 1)
– McGuire (on his debut) picked his spot when set up by Logan from 6 yards (33) but a scrambled effort (39) made it 1-1. Kelly set up McGuire for his 2nd goal (48) and it was so far so good. It should have been more until a header (80) then Thistle were all over the place and a tap-in from a corner (86) ruined the day.
Sat-08-Aug-1981 [h] (1-0) W2-0 Motherwell (League Cup Section 4 - game 1)
– No better than workmanlike was good enough to beat Second Division Motherwell. A fine run by Park down the wing from half-way set up Higgins to knock in a cut-back (30). Motherwell wasted a few chances in the second half then, as frustration set in, they conceded a pen which Gibson converted (82).
Mon-08-Aug-1977 [h] (0-0) W3-0 Clydebank (Anglo-Scottish Cup Preliminary Round, 1st leg)
– Clydebank had 3 great chances - all saved by Rough - before half-time. Thistle, in pale blue, did very little in the first half but they took the lead (51) through Melrose (a shot off a defender) then Gibson rounded the keeper and shot home (69). Melrose lobbed the keeper (81) for a solid enough win.
Sat-08-Aug-1970 [a] (1-2) W3-2 Stirling Albion (League Cup Section 5 - game 1)
– Life out of the top league began with a jolt as Thistle went 2 behind in 7 mins. Once the defence settled they began to look dangerous. McQuade went close then scored (35). After a barrage of shots, Strachan scored his only goal for the club (53) and Bone headed in a Rae free-kick (72).
Sat-08-Aug-1964 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Celtic (League Cup Section 3 - game 1)
– Thistle edged things in terms of possession but both sets of forwards were either well off target, or shot straight at the keepers. The second half was little different. The Celtic keeper had 4 or 5 fine saves to thwart Thistle as they took the game to Celtic at every opportunity. Little wonder it remained 0-0.
Sat-08-Aug-1959 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Airdrieonians (League Cup Section 1 - game 1)
– In glorious weather, 18,000 saw Mathers' header cleared off the line then Harvey hit the bar. McParland “scored“ with a left foot drive (38) that went through a hole in the side net. He hit the post, as did Smith. Thistle were the better moving team but were unlucky. It was a scrappy game nonetheless.
Sat-08-Aug-1953 [h] (1-0) W4-1 Clyde (League Cup Division A, Section D - game 1)
– Thistle hit woodwork twice before MacKenzie tapped in a shot that had run along the crossbar (8). Howitt scored a 2nd (49) then Clyde's goalkeeper was carried off. McGowan moved to the wing (an eye completely closed) and weakened at full-back, 10-man Clyde scored but so did Mathers and Walker (85 and 89).
Sat-08-Aug-1942 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Heart of Midlothian (Southern League - game 1)
– Two defensive errors by Thistle let Hearts in for 2 goals (11 and 46) but Stead (43) and Newall (80) scored to equalise twice and share the points in an excellent game. Curran missed a pen midway through the second half after a defender had punched a “snorter“ (SP) shot by Sharp off the line.
Sat-08-Aug-1936 [h] (3-0) W4-1 Queen of the South (SFL First Division - game 1)
– A solid start against a poor Queen's side. McKennan (10) opened for Thistle then Queens hit the bar. A Calderwood pen after Wallace was brought down (30) and a soft header by Wallace following a corner made it 3-0. Damage limitation delayed Wallace's 2nd (86) before Queens scored (90).
Sat-08-Aug-1931 [a] (2-0) W2-1 Morton (SFL First Division - game 1)
– The season was minutes old when Morrison grazed a post then Torbet opened for Thistle (12). Morrison got the 2nd goal while Morton had a defender off for treatment. They improved and reduced the lead as Thistle faded but couldn't find another goal. A draw would have been fairer.
Sat-08-Aug-1891 [h] (1-1) W3-2 Ayr (Scottish Alliance - game 1)
– First ever Scottish Alliance league match. Keay opened the scoring “amidst cheers“ (GH) but Ayr made it 1-1 at half-time. Paul headed a 2nd but a defensive error by Campbell made it 2-2. However, Thistle earned their first ever league points from a scramble late on in the game. A well-deserved win (SR).
