Sat-04-Aug-2018 [a] (0-2) L0-2 Ayr United (SPFL Championship - game 1)
– A pen (foul by McGinty) put Thistle behind (7) then the hapless debutant Melbourne made a hash of a clearance that led to the 2nd (18). Doolan's header and Slater's drive were as close as Thistle got. Positional changes at half-time improved things to some extent but they never looked like getting back into it.
Sat-04-Aug-2012 [a] (2-0) W2-0 Forfar Athletic (League Cup 1st Round)
– Thistle survived a scare (1) but were largely in control throughout. Erskine gave them the lead with a fine solo run (17) and Lawless scored with a low drive (37). Welsh hit the post then Murray was red carded on (tug, 43) but Forfar blasted the penalty over. They hit the bar as did Welsh and O'Donnell.
Sat-04-Aug-2007 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Stirling Albion (SFL First Division - game 1)
– 8 players made their competitive debuts. The goalless first half saw Thistle very much in control. Donnelly scored with a header from a Twaddle cross (59) but they couldn't extend their lead and Albion scored (header, 73). To their credit, both teams went all out for a winner but couldn't find one.
Sat-04-Aug-2001 [h] (2-2) D3-3 St Mirren (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Cracking start to the season. An unstoppable half volley put Thistle behind (6) but McLean equalised (pen, 21). A poor pass back led to relegated Saints' 2nd (25) but a bullet header from Elliot made it 2-2 (38). Saints made it 3-2 (64) but Lennon was set up by Britton for a point (86). Smashing game.
Tue-04-Aug-1998 [h] (0-0) L0-1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle (SFL Second Division - game 1)
– 1,905 saw Thistle's first ever game in the 3rd level of Scottish league football. They dominated the first half without scoring but a settled Inverness side scored the only goal (57) when slack defending let in the unmarked scorer to shoot past the advancing Arthur. Frantic efforts to level came to nothing.
Thu-04-Aug-1994 [a] (0-0) W1-0 Portadown (Friendly)
– A closely fought affair which saw Port have the better of things early on and Harbey cleared off the line. McWilliams went close but Thistle seldom showed in attack and a looping header by Cameron (56) was the only goal. The game petered out tamely. The 2 trialists played again but were not signed.
Sat-04-Aug-1990 [a] (1-0) W6-0 Ness (Friendly)
– With the wind, Thistle made little impression except for a McGlashan volley. After half-time a shot by English was spilled, Charnley made it 2-0 then a mishit shot by English deceived the keeper. Charnley scored with a pen then set up Robertson for 5-0 before English squeezed the ball in from a tight angle.
Mon-04-Aug-1986 [h] (1-0) W1-0 Celtic XI (Friendly)
– Derek Johnstone was “imposed” as player/coach then manager. A tempestuous friendly with virtually a Celtic reserve team. There were 3 bookings and a Celtic player was sent off in the second half. Smith was given time and space to shoot home (20). Gallagher and Docherty both hit the post late on.
Thu-04-Aug-1983 [h] (1-0) W2-0 Leeds United (Friendly)
– Thistle were fitter and more robust but Leeds (with 5 Anglo-Scots) looked slicker. Johnston hooked a Kenny pass home (42) but Leeds had more chances after the break and McNab had to look lively several times. Johnston shot narrowly past but scored again with a drive from 18 yards the keeper couldn't hold (68).
Fri-04-Aug-1978 [a] (2-1) W3-1 Buckie Thistle (Friendly)
– “Buckie's brave show” (APJ). Buckie started the better and when Rough fumbled the ball was knocked in (6). Somner scored with a pen (10) then Melrose tapped in (24) with the Buckie defence dithering. Melrose was denied by a fine save before McQuade let fly from 25 yards to complete the scoring (67).
Sat-04-Aug-1973 [a] (0-0) W2-0 Clydebank (Friendly)
– Clydebank started brightly and carved open the Thistle defence several times but wasted the chances. Lacking punch up front, Thistle made changes at half-time and things livened up. McDowall back-headed a Kellachan lob (52) and Glavin scored with a free-kick from the edge of the box (63).
