Sat-03-Aug-2024 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Greenock Morton (SPFL Championship - game 1)
– Sloppy Thistle survived a poor pass-back thanks to a save by debutant keeper Roberts. The last 15 minutes before h-t saw an improvement but it didn’t last. Morton probably edged it on chances but, in truth, neither keeper was troubled. Not a match to linger long in the memory. Take the point and clean sheet and move on.
Sat-03-Aug-2019 [a] (0-1) D1-1 Alloa Athletic (SPFL Championship - game 1)
– Thistle struggled to match the endeavour of Alloa who bossed the mid-field until the formation was changed. A deflected shot from distance (34) put Alloa ahead. A better second half saw a couple of outstanding saves then, when Cardle's header was touched on to a post, he followed up to blast home (60). Lots to work on.
Sat-03-Aug-2002 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Dundee United (Scottish Premier League - game 1)
– Thistle fought, chased and harried all afternoon and deserved the point. United fans taunted the home support about 16 May 1996. United missed a free header and play was scrappy from both teams. United edged things after half-time but there were few chances and Thistle ground out the draw.
Sat-03-Aug-1991 [a] (1-0) W3-1 Balintore (Friendly)
– On a scorching hot day, a comfortable win against the amateurs. Annand scored with a tap-in (15). A 25-yarder from McLaughlin made it 2-0 (70) before Balintore reduced the lead with a lob (75). McGlashan made it 3 from the edge of the box (85). A bad tackle on Peebles effectively ended his senior career.
Fri-03-Aug-1990 [a] (2-0) W4-0 Lewis & Harris Select (Friendly)
– Charnley baffled the keeper with a free-kick (13) and scored again from 20 yards. The local select adopted the off-side trap in the second half and for a while it inhibited Thistle until Charnley dribbled through the defence for his hat-trick. Late on a low hard cross was turned into the net for an og.
Mon-03-Aug-1987 [a] (?-?) L1-2 Baillieston Juniors (Friendly)
– McGuire was the only Thistle danger man with his mazy runs in this friendly/work-out but generally Thistle never managed to trouble the home side. The forwards got little service. Spittal scored from a corner. A host of substitutions made no difference.
Sat-03-Aug-1985 [a] (0-1) L0-2 St Johnstone (Friendly)
– Newly relegated Saints, with player-manager ex-JAG Gibson, attacked from the start. They missed a sitter then Watson's strike was blocked as the tackling got robust. A 20-yard shot left Brough stranded and gave Saints the lead (35) then Watson's free-kick hit the bar. A 2nd goal on the angle (89) sealed the win.
Tue-03-Aug-1982 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Queen's Park (Friendly)
– Park and Johnston kept the Queen's keeper busy from the start and Park hit the post. Rough was busier after half-time but it was fitting that Park and Johnston were involved in the only goal when a quick one-two led to Johnston poking home (62). Clark's header came off the bar late on.
Sun-03-Aug-1980 [h] (0-0) L0-2 Coventry City (Friendly)
– Thistle had the better of the first half and Deans had 2 efforts cleared off the line. Coventry got into their stride in the second half with 2 quick goals (a simple tap-in, 53 and an overhead kick, 57). Their keeper had some fine saves and Thistle struggled to find any sort of form.
Wed-03-Aug-1977 [a] (3-0) W6-1 Caledonian (Friendly)
– Telford St was Easy Street for Thistle against the Highland League champions. Somner shot them into a 2-goal lead (22 and 33) then Houston set up Sheed (38). There was a personal triumph for sub Melrose who scored a hat-trick in the last 6 minutes to double the score after Inverness had made it 3-1 (82).
Tue-03-Aug-1976 [n] (0-3) L1-4 Manchester City (Tennent Caledonian Cup 3rd Place Play-Off)
– Stronger and more methodical, City had too much talent on offer. A header (15) when Rough failed to cut out a cross, a cross and header (28), a shot from half-cleared corner (42) and a cross tucked away from close in (71) did the damage before Melrose volleyed in a John Craig free-kick (74).
Sat-03-Aug-1974 [h] (3-0) W4-3 Aalborg Boldspilklub (Friendly)
– Bertie Auld was appointed 11 June. Houston from 15 yards (25), a side foot from McQuade (36), McQuade again from a corner (42) and a long-range strike from Craig (46) put Thistle in a commanding lead but they went to sleep and almost let the Danes earn a draw. “Jekyll and Hyde Thistle” (ET).
Mon-03-Aug-1970 [a] (0-1) L1-4 Chester (Friendly)
– Glavin went close early on but generally a poor Thistle side made nothing of a stout Chester defence. They fell behind (20) and made little impression until Forsyth levelled (75). A minute later they were behind again then McKinnon was sent off (tackle) before 2 late goals made for a miserable night.
