matches (2nd August)

Sat-02-Aug-2025 [a] (1-3) L1-5 St Johnstone (SPFL Championship - game 1)
– The warning signs were evident even before Reading scored at the back post (15). Thistle were taken apart by Saints who were slick-moving with and without the ball, aided by some dreadful defending and gifted possession. The lead lasted 2 minutes and it was 3-1 by h-t. 4-1 (48) killed it and, mercifully, there was only one further goal (82). Bottom of the league. The only club to lose game one.
Sat-02-Aug-2014 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Fleetwood Town (Friendly)
– A fast, entertaining game in which Fleetwood always looked sharp (particularly on the break) and had the bulk of the chances but found the Thistle defence in good form, with Fox having some excellent saves. Thistle were rather disjointed and couldn't take the chances that came their way.
Fri-02-Aug-2013 [h] (0-0) D0-0 Dundee United (SPFL Premiership - game 1)
– 7,822 saw the SPFL's 1st ever game. Entertaining, both teams playing for a win, fine goalkeeping (especially from Fox), penalty claims (2 for Thistle) and 2-footed lunges (a United defender should have been sent off). A swerving 30-yarder from Forbes late on almost won it but a promising start to the SPFL.
Sat-02-Aug-2008 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Dunfermline Athletic (SFL First Division - game 1)
– It was mostly unchanged Thistle for 30 minutes then Dunfermline hit the bar from close in. Their keeper (future-JAG Gallacher) was in fine form and denied Chaplain and Robertson. The woodwork saved Thistle twice before McKeown scored from the edge of the box (87). “Terrific entertainment” (McCall).
Wed-02-Aug-2006 [h] (1-1) D2-2 Celtic XI (Kenny Arthur Testimonial)
– Arthur was in action early on his testimonial. He was beaten by the opener from the edge of the box. A left foot shot from a loose ball by a trialist (Strong) levelled things (38). Several aging players came on at half-time and the defence was out-paced (75) but a brilliant 25-yarder from Charnley earned the draw (85).
Sat-02-Aug-2003 [a] (0-0) W3-0 Crusaders (Friendly)
– There were no goals in the first half and Crusaders more than matched Thistle but they had a player red carded for stamping on Bonnes off the ball and Grady scored with the pen (50). He scored with another penalty (foul on Britton, 77) then Ross scored from close in for 3-0. An unsavoury friendly.
Sat-02-Aug-1997 [a] (0-1) D1-1 Hamilton Academical (SFL First Division - game 1)
– Cliftonhill. Things looked ominous when newly promoted Hamilton scored (poor marking, 4). Thistle (with 7 debutants) struggled to keep it 1-0 then O'Conner saved a pen. Farrell went close then Hetherston also missed a pen. Thistle finally managed to get going however and Martin equalised with a volley (79).
Fri-02-Aug-1996 [h] (0-0) D1-1 Preston North End (Friendly)
– Thistle were pushed back for the first half hour. The bar and Cairns kept it at 0-0. Towards half-time Henderson and Lyons had good chances but couldn't take them. Cairns' only mistake almost let in Preston (70) before a stooping header by Docherty (76) made it 1-0 but Preston's fine goal (84) levelled it.
Tue-02-Aug-1994 [a] (1-0) W2-0 Glentoran (Friendly)
– The score flattered a poor Thistle side who fell out of this match for long spells. Nelson came to the rescue early on. A turn and shot by English (26) put them ahead. Poor defending almost threw the lead away but Ayton pounced on a poor pass-back (80). The 2 trialists played again.
Wed-02-Aug-1989 [h] (2-2) L2-4 Rangers (Friendly)
– An excellent friendly. Flood set up Peebles who scored (10 secs) but Rangers equalised through ex-JAG Johnston (9). McCoy made it 2-1 (through ball, 10) but Johnston equalised (18) then Peebles hit the post. Murdoch had some excellent saves but as Thistle tired Rangers scored (59 and pen, 78).
Tue-02-Aug-1983 [a] (2-0) L2-3 Stirling Albion (Friendly)
– 2 goals by McDonald inside 25 minutes put Thistle well ahead and it should have been more by half-time. A low drive (65) put Albion back in the hunt then they levelled (73). Jardine and Watson both went off injured and with Thistle at sixes and sevens a fine winner (83) sent the locals home happy.
Wed-02-Aug-1978 [a] (1-0) W3-0 Lossiemouth (Friendly)
– O'Hara went close with a header but Thistle were far from impressive. A shot from inside the box by Melrose put Thistle ahead against stubborn Lossiemouth (35). Firstly, the post, then poor finishing denied the home team before Melrose volleyed in a McQuade cross (81) and from close in (82).
Mon-02-Aug-1976 [a] (0-1) L0-2 Rangers (Tennent Caledonian Cup Semi Final)
– A bad-tempered match with several bookings. Thistle dug in but were well beaten in the end. Somner missed a great chance in the 2nd min then Rangers went ahead (19). Things got needlessly aggressive at that point. The bar saved Thistle in the second half then on 70 minutes it was 2-0 with Johnstone's 2nd goal.
Sat-02-Aug-1969 [a] (1-0) W2-0 Crusaders (Friendly)
– Bone shot home a Gibson corner from 12 yards (7). Crusaders went close several times then Bone hit the post on half-time. Ritchie threw himself at a forward's feet to prevent an equaliser as Crusaders enjoyed a spell of pressure but sub Walters got the 2nd goal to finish the Irish tour with a win (78).
