Sat-01-Aug-2015 [a] (0-0) D0-0 Hamilton Academical (SPFL Premiership - game 1)
– On a new plastic pitch, a 2nd yellow for Frans (25) turned this match into a rear-guard struggle. Doolan ploughed a loan furrow as Hamilton pushed Thistle further and further back. Cerny's magnificent save proved crucial and although Hamilton hit the post (84) the 10 men hung on for a richly deserved point.
Sat-01-Aug-2009 [h] (1-0) W5-1 Berwick Rangers (League Cup 1st Round)
– Thistle had missed a few chances before Hodge shot from the edge of the box (30). Buchanan scored from the same distance (49) then Erskine scored from close in (52). Berwick pulled one back (70) but a pen by Buchanan (81) and Erskine (close in, 87) wrapped things up for a good day's work
Sat-01-Aug-1998 [a] (2-1) L2-3 East Fife (League Cup 1st Round) aet
– AET. Thistle were coasting when Lauchlan scored from a Morgan cross (13) and when Morgan took a Johnston pass (19). Callaghan should have made it 3-0 (28). The Fifers deservedly scored (36). Bryce's 25-yarder hit the post, a 20-yarder made it 2-2 (79) and more slack defending led to the winner (95). Thrown away.
Sat-01-Aug-1992 [h] (0-0) W1-0 Airdrieonians (SFL Premier Division - game 1)
– 4,818 welcomed back top division football. Airdrie had the better start and had a goal disallowed (dubiously off-side, 27) and Thistle were lucky it was still 0-0 at half-time. The winner came from an opportunist goal by Irons (47) with the Airdrie defence dithering and he hit the post later on. Quiet game. 5 bookings.
Wed-01-Aug-1990 [a] (1-0) D1-1 Gretna (Friendly)
– Before Gretna became “famous”. A poor game with few chances. Charnley dispossessed a defender and shot home (25). The second half was no better but Gretna equalised (85) when Duncan was lobbed.
Sat-01-Aug-1987 [a] (2-0) W3-1 Stenhousemuir (Friendly)
– A looping header by Gallagher (8) put Thistle 1-up then he struck the post from a Workman cross but he scored again soon after with a through ball from Kelly. Poor defending let in McDonald for a drive (49). A Watson back-header hit his own bar as 'Muir pressed and they scrambled the ball in at a corner (71).
Wed-01-Aug-1984 [h] (1-0) W1-0 Shrewsbury Town (Friendly)
– A goal by No 5 Carson (on his debut, 6) when he rose to powerfully head in a Gilmour cross separated the sides. Gilmour hit the bar from 25 yards (30) then Brough had a point-blank save to prevent an equaliser (35). A better performance as the new team bedded in.
Sat-01-Aug-1981 [a] (0-0) D1-1 Forfar Athletic (Friendly)
– An even first half saw Gibson's header hit the post (20). Higgins scrambled the ball in to break the deadlock (48). A soft pen (foul by O'Hara) was brilliantly saved by Rough but a forward got to the loose ball first for 1-1. Cormack was later fined £100 for foul language directed towards the referee (at a friendly!).
Wed-01-Aug-1979 [h] (1-0) D1-1 Dunfermline Athletic (Anglo-Scottish Cup Preliminary Round, 1st leg)
– Newly promoted to the 1st Div, Dunfermline should have been ahead before Melrose scored (fine header, 20) then it was Thistle's turn to miss chances. Park went close with a 20-yard drive. A run down the left, a cross and a header made it 1-1 (55). Thistle made no impression on a strong defence. Fair result.
Mon-01-Aug-1977 [a] (0-0) W1-0 Keith (Friendly)
– Thistle found it hard to break down a solid Keith defence and got increasingly frustrated they couldn't find the net. The home keeper had some fine saves but Somner finally outstripped 2 defenders and shot home for the only goal (51). Kelly shaved a post late on. “No Highland Fling for Thistle” (ET).
Fri-01-Aug-1975 [a] (4-0) W5-1 Caledonian (Friendly)
– Somner scored in just 10 secs without a Caley player touching the ball. Joe Craig made it 2-0 (21). Somner headed in via the keeper's fingers (38) for 3-0. Joe Craig set up the 4th for Somner (45) and he nodded in his 4th at the back post from a Houston cross (50). A header from a free-kick (75) was Caley's consolation.
Wed-01-Aug-1973 [h] (0-1) L0-2 Middlesbrough (Friendly)
– Thistle fell behind with a shot past Rough (32). Best efforts came from substitute McQuade. He hit the bar with an overhead kick and had a shot and a header just off target. A slip by Campbell let in Middlesbrough for the 2nd goal (67). Disjointed Thistle looked uncomfortable and lacking match practice.
Sat-01-Aug-1970 [a] (0-1) L0-1 Tranmere Rovers (Friendly)
– Thistle went behind from a header (3) but they fought back and Bone presented Lawrie with an open goal, only for him to hit the post. Rae hit the bar as Thistle enjoyed a lot of pressure before half-time. The second half was more even with Rough in good form but an equaliser proved elusive due to weak finishing.
