TTA report

Motorola Cup at Livingston. Wigan had defeated Premier Division St Johnstone so this match was for the 2 defeated teams. Saints scored just before half-time when, unseen by the ref or the linesman the scorer climbed all over a Thistle defender to head in a cross at the far post (43). No wins but encouraging however.

Media report

19-Jul-1999, The Scotsman

Despite an indifferent tour of Ireland and their failure to win the Motorola Tournament, St Johnstone manager Sandy Clark was not too despondent, and at least his side won the third-place play-off, beating Partick Thistle 1-0. Clark said: “Our pre-season preparations have gone quite well, considering that in the past two days most of our players have managed 90 minutes, and at this stage that's what it's all about. We got a draw against Wigan and a result today, and that is fairly reasonable,” he said. “We are far from the finished article, we still have guys out injured, and we are still actively strengthening our squad. As far as preparation goes, we are on schedule.” He added: “We have not had a chance to play our favoured first- team squad, which would involve about 15 players, but Roddy Grant, Allan Preston and Gerry McMahon are going south to see a specialist, and if they get the all-clear that will be a big plus.”

The Perth side overcame Thistle thanks to a Jim Weir goal just before half-time, with the defender meeting Stuart McCluskey's free- kick to knock the ball into the net with a looping header. Like Clark, Thistle manager John Lambie choose to put a positive spin on his side's weekend participation: “Apart from the fact we can't put the ball in the back of the net, I'm quite pleased,” said Lambie. “The big thing just now is to get the hearts and lungs working again. The back men (Ray Montgomerie and Kenny Brannigan) looked different class from what I had last year. I am reasonably happy, and I can see a big difference already in the team. We have nine new players and they are settling in quite well. I'm quietly confident about this season.”
