You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Thistle crushed Airdrie 9-0 on 12/12/1953. His team trailing 2-0 at the time, Ian McMillan broke forward and 5 yards from goal with just Ledgerwood to beat, he suddenly stopped and trailed the ball back for an off-side free-kick. He had clearly forgotten the old adage "play to the whistle" because he hadn't seen the ref waving play on. On 19/12 The "Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser" explained that "a sport" in the crowd had blown a whistle to put McMillan off. Had it gone to 2-1 things might have been different.
