You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

John McIntyre replaced the injured Dugald Morrison after a couple of minutes in a league match against Rangers at Ibrox on 20/1/1917. Nothing unusual in that except that Thistle were 49 years ahead of their time. Substitutes were strictly forbidden in competitive games until 1966. Thistle incurred the wrath of the League Management Committee of the SFL. Manager Easton explained to them that the game was only a few minutes old and that to maintain interest he had put a replacement on (with Rangers' kind agreement). This cut no ice however and the club were warned sternly that there must be no repetition of this practice.
