You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Linesmen. Don't you just love them? On 4/11/1916 at Tynecastle, the referee, thinking a cross from the wing had gone out in mid-air, blew for a goal-kick. Immediately after the whistle had gone the ball was knocked past Neil. Hearts protested and the referee consulted his linesman. Decision, a goal. 1-0 to Hearts. Thistle protested and again the referee consulted the same linesman. Decision, no goal. Outcome, a dropped ball.
