You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

The "Dundee Courier" in its report of the Thistle v Dundee game on 1/11/1913 was scathing about the partisanship of a section of the Thistle supporters. The issue seems to have been a lingering feud concerning a Dundee defender (Kelso) who, it was claimed, had been responsible for injuries to two Thistle players in a Scottish Cup tie the previous February in which one retired hurt and the other played as a passenger in a 1-0 defeat. The defender was barracked every time he touched the ball. "Unruly supporters again showed their demented partisanship" by demanding that any Dundee player committing a foul should be sent off whereas Thistle fouls were cheered. "It is a serious pass to which sport has been degraded." To redress the balance somewhat they reported that a Thistle director had complimented the defender on his performance.
