You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

On 18/10/1911 the "Dundee Courier" reported the decision of the SFA Council to suspend an unnamed Thistle player for 2 months being guilty of "a close season irregularity".  They pointed out that Third Lanark had recently protested to the Glasgow FA about the player who had helped defeat them in a Glasgow Cup-tie.  Their protest had been thrown out after 3 hours' debate. The player had now been suspended by the Council for exactly the same offence "in one single minute".  The paper didn't take sides but criticised the fact that the decisions were at complete variance with one another and reckoned "someone has blundered badly".  In a later edition the player was named as Hugh Thomson.  He had "played 2 matches in a trades competition for his employer during the close season".
