You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Robert Campbell was sent off while playing against Airdrie at home on 8/10/1904. The "Dundee Courier" reported that at his hearing before the SFA he was suspended for a month for "violently kicking" an opponent. The referee reported that he was stoned after the game and that stone throwing "was the favourite mode of entertainment". Mr Robertson, a member of the Thistle committee, claimed that the only reason some spectators had come on to the park at full-time was to surround the players and "pat them on the back as was the usual habit at Meadowside" (yet Thistle lost 3-0). Mr Ward, also of the Thistle committee, surprised the meeting by proposing the ground be closed for 2 weeks. This seemed a magnanimous gesture by the Thistle man until it was noted that Thistle's next two fixtures were away from home. Thistle were censured.
