You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

A 3-2 defeat at Motherwell on 30/11/1901 ended with a crowd invasion and assaults. Thistle protested to the SFL on 14/1/1902 that at the end of the match Motherwell supporters had surrounded the players and that 6 of them had been kicked. Further allegations were made that the police seemed to condone the conduct of the spectators and that Motherwell officials had done nothing. Two Thistle players testified they had been kicked. Motherwell claimed that Thistle's full-backs (Campbell and Wilson) had adopted a "hacking game" that had riled the home support and that it was the Thistle supporters who had forced the Thistle players into the pavilion so that they could start a fight with the home supporters. In addition it was said a Thistle official had been ejected from the pavilion for using bad language. The committee found the complaint "not proven".
