You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

Referee King seemed to have little hesitation in calling the league match against Cowlairs on 5/1/1895 off. Thick mist, drizzle and a frozen surface made his decision all the more correct. As was the custom in those days matches were often "downgraded" to friendlies but the conditions seemed so bad that option wasn't offered either. The "Scottish Referee" on 7/1/1885 recorded a rare event however. A "short conversation" with officials from both teams took place and the match went ahead - as a league match. A referee changed his mind. Yes, it did happen!
